San Diego County has sued 3D-printer filament maker Polymaker, alleging the company marketed filament to Californians for firearm-related uses. The case turns in part on whether the alleged marketing brings a raw material within California’s firearm-precursor rules and violates consumer-protection law. The complaint is an allegation, not a court finding: reporting available through October 10, 2026, does not establish that Polymaker is liable.
What the lawsuit alleges
The Los Angeles Times reported on October 10, 2026, that San Diego County brought the case with Giffords Law Center. AmmoLand reported on October 7 that the complaint was dated October 5 and filed in San Diego Superior Court. According to AmmoLand’s account, the plaintiffs are the People of the State of California, acting through San Diego County Counsel, and the defendants are Polymaker LLC and 50 unnamed Does. The report also identified Giffords and White & Case as counsel.

The complaint’s reported theory is that Polymaker’s alleged promotion of certain filament for firearm-related uses brings the material within California’s firearm-precursor framework. AmmoLand describes the pleading as including an Unfair Competition Law claim and other alleged statutory violations. Those are the plaintiffs’ legal arguments; whether the laws apply as they contend is for the court to decide. The complaint itself was not available in the reporting summarized here, so its filing particulars and allegations are attributed to the reports.
The Los Angeles Times said Polymaker did not respond to its requests for comment. That does not establish the company’s position on the allegations.

- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Why filament is at the center of the case
Printer filament is polymer material sold on spools and fed into a 3D printer. The dispute described in the reporting concerns PLA+ filament and alleged marketing to people interested in 3D-printed firearms. It is not a finding that all filament is a firearm precursor, nor that a particular spool was used to make a particular weapon.
The Los Angeles Times quoted the complaint: “Unlike ghost guns assembled from commercially sold unfinished parts, 3D printed ghost guns can be produced from plastic filament using consumer-grade equipment.” The paper also quoted the complaint’s assertion that a functional, untraceable firearm could be printed and assembled in less than nine hours. These are statements advanced by the plaintiffs and reproduced by the newspaper, not independently verified test results or general production benchmarks.

What the cited police recovery does—and does not—show
The Los Angeles Times reported that San Diego police recovered filament, printed guns, and firearm parts from a 16-year-old’s home workshop in spring 2026. The suit cites that episode as evidence of harm, and AmmoLand’s summary supplies additional alleged details about the recovery. The reports do not establish that Polymaker filament was recovered, that the company’s marketing caused the incident, or that any specific spool was used in a recovered firearm.

Kit-built weapons made from commercially sold unfinished parts are another category, and law-enforcement officials have said those are more common. The number of California-recovered ghost guns made from scratch with 3D printers remains unclear in the Los Angeles Times account; broad ghost-gun recovery totals cannot answer that narrower question.

How this case differs from other California actions
A separate lawsuit and new state-law provisions provide context, but neither should be confused with the Polymaker case.
| Issue | Polymaker case | Separate digital-code case |
|---|---|---|
| What is at issue | Alleged marketing of polymer filament, a raw material, for firearm-related uses; the plaintiffs argue that the marketing implicates firearm-precursor and consumer-protection rules. | Alleged distribution of digital firearm-manufacturing code and alleged promotion or facilitation of unlawful manufacture. |
| Who brought it | The People of the State of California through San Diego County, with Giffords Law Center involved, according to the reporting on the complaint. | California Attorney General Rob Bonta and San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu. |
| Defendants and timing | Polymaker LLC and 50 unnamed Does; complaint reportedly dated October 5, 2026, and filed in San Diego Superior Court. | Gatalog Foundation and CTRLPew; California DOJ described the case in a February 2026 release. |
| Status in the cited material | A complaint with allegations not adjudicated in the reviewed reporting. | A separate suit described by California DOJ; it is not a ruling in the Polymaker case. |
California DOJ says provisions in AB 1263 and SB 704 took effect on January 1, 2026, including a new criminal offense and civil cause of action related to facilitating or causing unlawful firearm manufacture. The existence of those provisions does not resolve whether the county’s interpretation applies to Polymaker’s alleged conduct.

What readers can conclude so far
The central question is not simply whether a 3D printer can use filament, but whether the alleged marketing and intended uses bring the material within the laws cited by the plaintiffs. The available reports establish that San Diego County filed suit and describe the complaint’s theory; they do not establish that Polymaker violated the law, that its products caused a particular firearm recovery, or how the court will interpret the relevant statutes.
