Depending on your region, firmware version, and account settings, that content may be labeled as “ads,” “recommended,” “promotions,” or “content.”
If you want a calmer screen, you usually have at least one in-fridge setting you can turn off. When those toggles aren’t visible, you can still reduce the behavior using SmartThings settings or network-level blocking.

Why Samsung smart fridges show full-screen ads
These displays are typically powered by Samsung’s content framework on the Home screen. Even when you don’t install any apps, the fridge can fetch promotional tiles, seasonal campaigns, partner content, and recommended services that appear like full-screen takeovers.

Common triggers include: a connected Samsung account, enabling certain content categories (recipes, wellness, shopping lists, partner services), regional marketing agreements, and firmware updates that add or reorder content sources.
Before you start: confirm your model and firmware
The menu names vary by generation. Before changing anything, note your exact model and software version so you can compare against what you see on-screen.
Find your software version
- On the fridge, open Settings.
- Go to Support (or About Family Hub on some models).
- Select Software Update or Device Information.
- Record the version number shown.
Identify your Family Hub generation
If your screen shows tiles for cooking/recipes and a home “carousel,” it’s usually Family Hub. If the UI looks like a simpler smart display without those tiles, ads may still exist but the settings wording may differ.
Disable full-screen ads inside the fridge UI
Start with the fridge itself. This is the fastest path and usually the most reliable for stopping full-screen promotional pages.
Turn off Recommended / Promotional content (if present)
Look for any category that references recommendations, promotions, featured content, or partner offers.
- Open Settings on the fridge.
- Find Display, Home screen, or Content.
- Open Recommended Content, Promotions, or a similarly named toggle.
- Set it to Off.
- Return to the Home screen and wait 5–10 minutes to confirm the behavior stops.
Disable content cards on the Home screen (if present)
Some models show individual cards you can remove without disabling all smart features.

- On the Home screen, tap and hold any promotional card.
- Select Hide, Remove, or Turn off (wording varies).
- Repeat for other promo-style cards you see.
- If you see Manage Home Screen, open it and turn off any categories that sound like ads or partner content.
Change the display mode so the Home screen stays “quiet”
Even if you can’t disable all content sources, you can often reduce takeovers by changing how the screen idles and refreshes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Display or Screen.
- Look for options like Home screen, Idle mode, or Always-on content.
- Set idle mode to a calmer option (for example, “Clock” or “Minimal”). If you see Ambient, try turning off features that rotate promotional imagery.
Check Samsung account and privacy-related settings
Full-screen promos are more likely when the fridge is tied to a Samsung account configured for personalized experiences or marketing.
Disable marketing notifications tied to the account
- On the fridge, open Settings.
- Go to Account or Samsung account.
- Open Notifications or Privacy.
- Turn off anything labeled Marketing, Promotions, Special offers, or similar.
Limit personalized recommendations (where available)
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Find toggles like Personalized recommendations, Use usage data, or Ad preferences.
- Set them to Off or choose a less personalized option.
- Give it a few minutes; some changes apply after a refresh.
If the fridge does not expose an ad-preferences toggle, check the Samsung privacy controls linked to your account (via the Samsung account web settings) after you try the in-fridge menus.
Use SmartThings to adjust connected-device behavior
On many setups, the fridge’s content/notification behavior is influenced by SmartThings and the Samsung account connected to it.
Verify the device and review notification settings
- Open SmartThings on your phone.
- Go to Devices and select your fridge.
- Open Settings for the device.
- Find Notifications and disable promo-style alerts if offered.
- Also review any app-level notification permissions for SmartThings itself (Android/iOS notification settings) to ensure you’re not receiving marketing alerts.
Remove optional services you don’t use (where the UI allows)
Some Family Hub experiences depend on installed/connected services. If you see anything like “Shopping,” “Partner offers,” or similar categories inside connected services, turn them off or unlink them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHard workaround when toggles are missing: block ad delivery
If your firmware doesn’t show a switch for promotions, network blocking can stop the fridge from loading ad content. This is not as “clean” as a built-in toggle, but it often works when the ads are delivered from specific endpoints.

Option A: Put the fridge on a restricted network (guest/VLAN)
- Create a guest network or dedicated IoT VLAN on your router.
- Connect only the fridge to that network.
- Restrict the guest/IoT network from reaching your main devices (and, if your router allows it, limit internet access categories).
- Test: watch the Home screen for 10–30 minutes and see whether promo takeovers stop.
Option B: Block domains at the router level
This method works when you can identify the domains the fridge calls to fetch promotional content.
- Temporarily enable router logging or use a network monitor that shows DNS/traffic (some routers show “Top domains”).
- Trigger the ad (wait until a full-screen promo appears).
- Identify recurring domains that appear around that moment.
- Add blocks in your router under Security, Access Control, or Content Filtering.
- Reboot the fridge and test again.
Gotcha: Blocking the wrong domain can break core functionality like remote viewing or recipe features. Make changes one block at a time.
Option C: DNS-based filtering
If you can’t find specific domains, DNS filtering is a pragmatic middle ground.

If disabling recommended/promotions didn’t work, ads may be coming from a different source category than you changed, or a later refresh re-enables content.
After a software update
- After updating, re-check Settings > Display/Home screen/Content toggles.
- Return to the Home screen and remove/hide any new promo cards.
- Wait for the first post-update sync (some devices re-fetch content within an hour).
Ads triggered by “Family Hub” home carousel refresh
Some devices show promos only when rotating the carousel or when the screen “wakes” after idle.

- Change Idle mode or Ambient settings to a minimal option.
- Disable any “Show featured content,” “Auto-play,” or “Trending” toggles if you see them.
- Test by leaving the fridge idle for 30 minutes, then check whether a full-screen promo appears on wake.
Factory reset without re-enabling personalization
Use a factory reset only if your menus are missing all the toggles you need or your changes won’t “stick.”
- Back up anything important (some lists/choices may be lost).
- On the fridge: Settings > General > Reset (wording varies).
- Complete the reset.
- During setup, avoid enabling personalized experiences if prompted.
- After setup, immediately check for Recommended/Promotions toggles before signing into services that re-enable them.
Comparison: disable vs. reduce vs. block
| Approach | What it does | Reliability | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable in fridge UI | Turns off recommended/promotional content sources | High (when available) | Low |
| Hide cards / change display mode | Reduces visibility and takeovers | Medium | Low |
| SmartThings/privacy settings | Stops account-driven notifications/personalization | Medium | Low to medium |
| Network blocking (router/DNS/VLAN) | Prevents ad content from loading | Medium to high | Medium (may break features) |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing only one toggle. Ads can be sourced from multiple categories (Home screen cards, recommended content, and notifications).
- Ignoring firmware differences. Two identical models can show different menu labels after different updates.
- Blocking without testing. If you use router/domain blocks, add changes one at a time and keep notes.
- Forgetting account settings. Even if you disable promotions on-device, signed-in account personalization can reintroduce content after sync.
FAQs
Why don’t I see any “disable ads” option?
Some firmware builds don’t expose that exact wording. Look for alternatives like “Recommended Content,” “Promotions,” “Featured,” “Content cards,” or “Personalized recommendations.” If none exist, network blocking is often the only way to stop full-screen takeovers.
Will disabling promos stop recipe updates or smart features?
Usually, no. Legitimate features like recipe suggestions may depend on recommendation settings, so if you disable personalization, you may lose some “smart” tailoring—but core functions like temperature control and basic app connectivity should remain.
Do I need to change settings on my phone too?
If SmartThings or the Samsung account sends notifications, then yes. Review SmartThings device notification settings and phone notification permissions so marketing alerts don’t keep coming.
Does a factory reset remove ads?
It can, especially if you avoid re-enabling personalization during setup. But if your account settings still allow promotions, ads can return after sync—so check privacy toggles immediately after the reset.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What if I block DNS and the fridge stops working properly?
Revert the DNS change first and test again. If that fixes it, switch to a more targeted approach (router domain blocks or a restricted network) rather than broad DNS filtering.
Bottom Line
The most reliable way to stop Samsung smart fridge full-screen ads is turning off the in-fridge “Recommended/Promotions” and Home screen content toggles—then reinforcing it by checking Samsung account privacy and SmartThings notification settings.
If your menus don’t include those controls, use a restricted IoT/guest network or DNS/domain blocking to prevent ad content from loading, testing changes one at a time to avoid breaking core fridge features.
