The spec feels like a generational plot twist: a monitor can now offer a high-detail mode and a much faster mode in one display. Samsung announced global availability in May 2026, but its launch releases did not state a price.
What is Samsung’s new 5K gaming monitor?
The Samsung Odyssey G8 G80HF is a 27-inch IPS gaming monitor with a native resolution of 5120 × 2880, or 5K, and a stated pixel density of 218 pixels per inch. Samsung announced it as part of its 2026 Odyssey lineup. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Samsung’s U.S. announcement and its 2026 Odyssey product-family page describe the model and its display modes.

The “makes me feel so old” part is the pairing: 5K is usually the sort of spec that suggests prioritizing fine detail, while 180Hz signals a gaming display built for fast motion. The G80HF does not ask buyers to pick just one; its Dual Mode offers a lower-resolution, higher-refresh option.
How do 5K, QHD and Dual Mode work?
In its native 5K mode, Samsung rates the G80HF for up to 180Hz. Dual Mode lets it switch to QHD resolution for up to 360Hz. The practical trade-off is straightforward: 5K provides more pixels for detailed images and workspace, while QHD gives the monitor more refresh-rate headroom for smoother motion when a game and PC can take advantage of it.

These are maximum manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee that every game will run at 180 or 360 frames per second. Actual performance depends on the PC, game, and input configuration. Samsung’s announcement does not provide independent frame-rate, input-lag, response-time, or image-quality measurements, nor does it state the minimum GPU requirements for the G80HF.
How does it compare with Samsung’s other 2026 gaming monitors?
The nearest comparison is the 32-inch Odyssey G8 G80HS, Samsung’s 6K IPS model. Samsung also announced 4K OLED G8 and G7 displays. The right choice depends on screen size, panel type and whether you value higher native resolution or a faster alternate mode—not on resolution alone.

| Model | Size and panel | Native resolution and pixel density | Native-mode refresh rate | Alternate mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Odyssey G8 G80HF | 27-inch IPS | 5K (5120 × 2880), 218 PPI | Up to 180Hz | QHD, up to 360Hz |
| Odyssey G8 G80HS | 32-inch IPS | 6K, 224 PPI | Up to 165Hz | 3K, up to 330Hz |
| 4K OLED G8 | OLED; size not stated in the cited announcement | 4K; pixel density not stated | Up to 240Hz | No alternate mode stated in the cited announcement |
| 4K OLED G7 | OLED; size not stated in the cited announcement | 4K; pixel density not stated | Up to 165Hz | No alternate mode stated in the cited announcement |
The 6K G80HS offers the highest native resolution and slightly higher stated pixel density, on a larger screen; the G80HF offers a higher stated top refresh rate in both its native and alternate modes. The OLED models trade IPS for OLED and have their own 4K refresh-rate specifications. Samsung’s announcement does not give enough comparative testing to declare one universally better for image quality or gaming.

When did the Odyssey G8 G80HF launch, and what does it cost?
Samsung’s U.S. newsroom announced the lineup on May 19, 2026, saying the monitors were available to order on Samsung.com and from select retailers. Samsung’s U.K. announcement, dated May 22, also described the G80HF’s 5K/180Hz and QHD/360Hz modes and reported global availability. The published material establishes Samsung’s advertised resolution, pixel density and refresh-rate modes, along with selected connectivity and feature claims. It does not establish how the monitor performs in independent testing: there are no cited measurements of input lag, pixel response, brightness, color accuracy or HDR impact, and no hands-on assessment. Treat the headline specifications as a useful shortlist, then look for independent measurements and confirm that your PC and connection can support the mode you intend to use.
