Samsung unveiled a glasses-free 3D gaming monitor at Gamescom in Cologne on August 21, 2024. The product later reached retail as the 27-inch Odyssey 3D G90XF: a 4K, 165Hz monitor that uses eye tracking and a lenticular lens to create a 3D effect for a viewer positioned in front of it. It is a real product, not just a trade-show concept—but its 3D experience depends on supported games, Samsung software and viewing position.
What Samsung showed at Gamescom 2024
Samsung announced the Odyssey 3D on August 21, 2024, during Gamescom, held in Cologne from August 21 to 25. The company presented it as part of its gaming-monitor lineup, alongside other Odyssey displays. At the event, visitors could see a demonstration featuring KRAFTON’s inZOI, then still unreleased. A curated show-floor demo demonstrated the concept; it did not establish how the monitor would perform across a broad game library at home. Samsung’s announcement and Gamescom demonstration coverage describe the launch and showcase.
At the announcement, Samsung had not confirmed the retail price or availability. The eventual U.S. retail model is the Odyssey 3D G90XF, model LS27FG900XNXZA. The product’s later retail identity and specifications should not be confused with a confirmed retail launch at Gamescom.
How the glasses-free 3D effect works
The G90XF is an autostereoscopic display: it directs different image information to each eye without requiring glasses. Samsung describes a front-facing lenticular lens, a built-in stereo camera that tracks the viewer’s eyes, and View Mapping, which adjusts the displayed image based on the viewer’s position. Samsung says users can switch between 2D and 3D modes. This is not a hologram or a room-wide effect; it is designed around a tracked viewer looking from a suitable position. Samsung’s technical description explains the lens, camera and View Mapping system.

Because the image is mapped to the tracked viewer, positioning matters. Obstructing the camera, moving outside its effective tracking area, or having several people at different angles may interfere with the intended effect. Samsung’s announcement does not specify a precise viewing-zone measurement, so there is no basis here for promising a particular distance or angle.
Retail specifications and U.S. price
The original Gamescom announcement introduced the concept; the figures below come from Samsung’s later retail and launch materials. Samsung’s U.S. product page displayed a price of $1,399.99 when checked in August 2026. That is a dated page observation, not a guaranteed or permanent MSRP; regional prices and promotions can differ.

Game compatibility: 2D is not the same as 3D support
The monitor can display ordinary 2D content, but that does not mean every PC game will have a convincing 3D mode. Samsung’s support materials provide Odyssey 3D Hub software and supported-game resources; the Hub and compatibility list are part of the experience. A title running normally in 2D is not necessarily a title with a supported 3D profile, and generic 2D-to-3D conversion should not be treated as equivalent to content specifically supported for the display.

What a PC needs—and what the specifications do not guarantee
Samsung’s U.S. Odyssey information says the monitor does not impose a separate special PC hardware requirement beyond the game’s normal system requirements. That addresses compatibility, not performance. Rendering a game at 4K can already tax a graphics card; the practical demands of a particular 3D mode will also depend on its software implementation, game, settings and GPU. A 165Hz panel does not guarantee 165 frames per second, particularly in 3D.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Samsung does not establish one universal GPU recommendation or guaranteed frame rate for all games and 3D profiles. If a supported title runs poorly, reducing resolution, ray tracing, texture settings or the frame-rate target may help, but the right adjustment depends on the game and hardware. Check the current manual and regional support materials for connection and software setup details before buying; the information here does not verify a universal port or operating-system requirement. Samsung’s general Odyssey monitor page provides its stated compatibility context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is the Odyssey 3D G90XF for?
The G90XF is a specialist premium monitor. Its appeal is the possibility of glasses-free 3D at a desktop, alongside a 27-inch 4K/165Hz panel that can also be used in 2D. The price premium makes most sense for someone who specifically wants to try this display approach and whose games appear in Samsung’s supported ecosystem.

- HANDPICKED BY AMAZON: They did the research so you don’t have to
- THE ULTIMATE QD-OLED MONITOR EXPERIENCE: Experience the difference with Samsung OLED. A brighter screen delivers brilliant colors, deeper shades, and more intense contrast, bringing vibrant vistas to life in new ways
- ULTRAWIDE VISTAS: Immerse yourself in expansive worlds with an ultrawide display that’s two quads wide. Enjoy maximum screen space and razor-sharp detail, while the 1800R curvature wraps around your field of vision for unparalleled depth and engagement

- SEE EVERY DETAIL: Uncover every secret with infinite expression with DisplayHDR True Black 400, delivering true blacks and rich dark tones without pixel light bleed. Experience unmatched color accuracy, bringing every game to life with stunning detail
- Consider it if glasses-free 3D is a primary reason to upgrade, your preferred titles are supported, and you are comfortable with a single-viewer, position-dependent experience.
- Be cautious if you expect every game to convert equally well, share the screen with people seated at different angles, or already struggle to run games at 4K.
- Compare conventional monitors if your priority is value, OLED contrast, HDR impact or the best standard 2D image for the money. Samsung’s Odyssey range includes conventional gaming-monitor categories.
- Compare VR if you want an environment that surrounds you rather than a 3D image on a desktop screen. A headset such as Meta Quest 3 is a different form factor, not a direct substitute for an ordinary monitor.
The Gamescom announcement was a product unveiling and technology showcase, not proof that every PC game or every viewing setup would benefit. The retail G90XF makes the idea tangible, but its value rests on supported content, correct positioning and whether glasses-free 3D is worth the premium to you.
