Choose by phone first: Apple Watch Series 12 is the straightforward option for iPhone users, while Samsung’s Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 are designed for Android phones. Some advanced Samsung health and Galaxy AI features still require a Galaxy phone, so Android compatibility does not mean every feature works on every Android device.
Which is better: Samsung Galaxy Watch or Apple Watch?
Neither is a universal winner. If you plan to keep an iPhone, Apple Watch Series 12 is the natural mainstream choice. If you use Android, Samsung’s current options are Galaxy Watch9 for everyday wellness and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 for demanding environments and structured training. The right comparison depends on your phone and how you intend to use the watch—not just the brand or a list of sensors.

Samsung announced Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 on July 22, 2026. Apple introduced Series 12 in September 2026. These are the current mainstream models represented in the available announcements; the Ultra2 belongs in a rugged, training-oriented tier rather than a direct standard-model comparison. Does Samsung Galaxy Watch work with iPhone, and can Apple Watch work with Android?
Make compatibility your first filter. Samsung says Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 are compatible with Android phones. Apple Watch Series 12 belongs to the iPhone ecosystem; it is not a cross-platform alternative for Android owners. If you are keeping your current phone, decide this before comparing features or accessories.

Android users: check which Samsung features need a Galaxy phone
Samsung’s August 31, 2026 guidance says that certain personalized health insights and Galaxy AI health features—including Running Coach—require Galaxy compatibility. The watches’ Android compatibility therefore does not guarantee access to every feature on every Android phone. Check the feature requirements for your specific phone and region before buying. Samsung’s ecosystem guidance explains the distinction.
iPhone users: start with Apple Watch
For an iPhone owner, Apple Watch Series 12 is the natural mainstream match. Choosing Samsung instead is not a way to get an equivalent Apple Watch experience while keeping an iPhone: Samsung’s compatibility statement covers Android phones, while Apple positions Series 12 within its iPhone ecosystem.

How do Galaxy Watch9, Galaxy Watch Ultra2, and Apple Watch Series 12 differ?
Compare models by intended role. Samsung describes Galaxy Watch9 as an everyday health-management watch spanning sleep, cardiovascular health, exercise, and recovery. It positions Galaxy Watch Ultra2 for precise workout tracking and structured training in demanding environments. Apple presents Series 12 as its mainstream watch and highlights a new Health Sensing System.

Which smartwatch has better battery life?
The available figures do not establish a battery-life winner. Apple states that Series 12 offers up to 24 hours of everyday battery life and up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout. These are Apple estimates, not results from an independent comparison with Samsung.
Apple’s stated everyday test included 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of app use, a 60-minute workout with music over Bluetooth, and six hours of sleep tracking during 24 hours. Apple says GPS use stayed connected to iPhone; the cellular test included four hours of cellular use. Actual battery life varies with use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors. See Apple’s Series 12 announcement and Apple’s comparison details for the manufacturer’s qualifications.

No comparable Galaxy Watch9 runtime test under the same conditions is established here. Without matched test conditions, those Apple estimates cannot fairly be used to claim that either brand lasts longer.

What should you check before choosing a model?
- Phone compatibility: Confirm that the watch works with the phone you intend to keep, then check whether the particular features you want have additional device requirements.
- Use case: For everyday wellness, consider Galaxy Watch9 or Apple Watch Series 12 according to your phone. For demanding structured training, Samsung positions Ultra2 for that role; compare it with a rugged or premium-tier Apple model rather than treating the standard Series 12 as a like-for-like match.
- Configuration and market: Verify case size, GPS or cellular configuration, local availability, and price for your country and the exact model. These details can vary and are not established as universal values here.
- Accessories: Confirm the exact generation, case size, and connector before buying a replacement band or charger. Apple’s testing notes name a Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable; that does not establish that Samsung accessories are interchangeable with Apple accessories.
Bottom line
Keep your phone in the equation: choose Apple Watch Series 12 for an iPhone, and look to Galaxy Watch9 or Galaxy Watch Ultra2 for Android, depending on whether everyday wellness or demanding training matters more. Check Galaxy-only feature requirements, and do not infer a battery winner from Apple’s estimates without a comparable Samsung test.
