Compatible Galaxy Watches estimate body fat using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): they send a small electrical current through the body, measure the resistance it encounters, and combine that reading with profile information in a Samsung algorithm. The watch does not directly see or weigh fat tissue, so its body-fat percentage is an estimate—not a clinical measurement.
What the watch measures
A BIA sensor on the back of a compatible Galaxy Watch measures electrical impedance. During the reading, you touch the watch’s side buttons with fingers from your other hand, creating the measurement path. The watch uses the resulting impedance and profile information to estimate body-composition values.

Depending on the device and screen, results can include weight, skeletal muscle, fat mass, body-fat percentage, BMI, body water, and basal metabolic rate. These are calculated estimates, not direct images or measurements of each tissue. Samsung’s manual says its algorithm can produce results that differ from a hospital DXA scan or another consumer device, and the reviewed documentation does not publish the full calculation. Samsung’s body-composition guidance and Galaxy Watch user manual explain the method and its limitations.
Which Galaxy Watches support body composition?
Samsung identifies the Galaxy Watch4 series and later released Galaxy Watch models as supporting body composition, subject to the exact model, software, and regional availability. Samsung’s regional support pages specifically list the Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 series and warn that the feature may not be available in some countries. That does not mean every Samsung watch has it. Check Samsung Health on your watch and the support information for your model and market. Samsung UK’s model and feature guidance and Samsung regional support describe availability.

How to take a repeatable reading
For useful comparisons, keep the measurement conditions as similar as possible. Samsung recommends measuring in the morning before eating and after using the toilet, and avoiding a reading immediately after exercise or a shower.
- Secure the watch on your wrist and make sure its back sensor is clean and dry. Remove metal accessories, and avoid a metal band during the measurement.
- Open Samsung Health and choose Body composition. Confirm the requested profile information, including height, weight, and gender.
- Follow the on-watch tutorial and place the fingers of your opposite hand on the indicated side buttons. Use the finger placement shown on screen.
- Raise both arms so your armpits are open, then remain still until the measurement finishes. The result appears on the watch; Samsung Health can store and track readings on a compatible phone.
Incorrect profile details—including age, height, or gender—can affect the estimate. Moisture, movement, an incorrect finger position, or metal accessories can also interfere with the reading. Follow the watch’s prompts rather than trying to adjust the measurement yourself. Samsung’s measurement instructions cover the recommended setup and technique.

What Samsung’s accuracy claim does—and does not—mean
Samsung’s US support page says the measurement has 98% correlation to DXA scans. Correlation describes how measurements are associated; it does not mean a particular person’s result is guaranteed to be within 2% of a DXA result. It is not an individual error range.

A 2022 peer-reviewed study compared Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic readings with DXA and laboratory-grade octapolar BIA. Of 109 people recruited, 75 completed the full protocol. The study authors reported systematic differences in fat-free mass between wearable BIA and DXA that they said could be corrected, while wearable BIA was less precise than DXA and needed more repeat measurements to detect changes with equal confidence.

For fat-free-mass precision in that study, the authors reported a coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.7% and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.4 kg for DXA, compared with CV of 1.3% and RMSE of 0.7 kg for wearable BIA. Those are study-specific fat-free-mass statistics, not an error range for body-fat percentage. The study supports cautious monitoring, but does not establish a fixed error for an individual reading or validate every later Galaxy Watch generation. The work and equipment were supported by an unrestricted Samsung grant; the authors reported that the sponsor had no role in the study’s design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, writing, or publication decision. The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
How to interpret changes over time
Use the watch as a way to follow a trend, not to treat one number as definitive. Compare readings from the same device taken under similar conditions; readings from different watches, scales, or clinical methods may not match because they use different algorithms and measurement approaches. A single change may reflect measurement variation rather than a meaningful change in body composition. Samsung’s manual explicitly cautions that results can differ among its watch, DXA, and commercial body-composition devices.

If you need a clinical assessment, discuss the appropriate method with a healthcare professional. Samsung says the feature is for general personal information and is not intended to detect, diagnose, or treat a medical condition or disease.
Who should avoid the measurement
Samsung advises against using the body-composition measurement if you are pregnant or have an implanted pacemaker or other implanted medical device. Samsung also says results may not be accurate for people under 20. These cautions apply to the BIA measurement, not just to how its results should be interpreted. See Samsung’s safety and intended-use guidance before measuring.
