A Samsung washing machine may have a front-load pump filter, a model-dependent top-load lint filter, or a water-hose mesh filter—and these parts do different jobs. The right one to clean depends on your washer’s model and market. Samsung says its pump filter is for front-load washers; top-load machines do not have that pump filter, and some top-load models also lack a lint filter.

Samsung describes the front-load pump filter as helping to keep lint and other debris out of the washer’s drain system. A clogged pump filter can interfere with draining or spinning, but those symptoms alone do not confirm that the filter is the cause. Samsung U.S. spinning troubleshooting

Where is the filter on a Samsung washing machine?
Front-load pump filter
On applicable front-load models, the pump-filter access panel is near the bottom of the washer. Behind it are the filter and, on the U.S. models covered by Samsung’s instructions, an emergency drain hose used to empty residual water before removing the filter.
Top-load lint filter
There is no single location or universal design to assume. First check whether your model has a lint filter, then use its manual to identify and access it. Samsung Australia notes that some top-load models do not have one.

Water-hose mesh filter
This screen is at the water-inlet hose connection, not behind the lower pump-filter panel. Consult the manual for your model before disconnecting a hose or removing the screen.
How to clean a Samsung front-load pump filter
The following procedure reflects Samsung U.S. guidance. If the panel, hose, or filter on your washer differs, stop and use the manual for its exact model rather than forcing a part.

- Prepare for residual water. Turn the washer off. Place a towel and a shallow container by the lower pump-filter access panel.
- Drain the washer through the emergency hose. Open the panel, pull out the hose, and remove its cap over the container. Let the water drain fully. Water may be very hot after a hot cycle; Samsung advises allowing one hour for it to cool before draining.
- Remove the filter. With the hose drained, twist the pump filter counterclockwise. Some models require pressing the filter inward while turning it.
- Clean and inspect. Rinse away debris and use a small toothbrush or another soft-bristle brush to remove dirt. Check the pump impeller inside the filter housing for debris.
- Reinstall the parts securely. Turn the filter clockwise until secure. Firmly replace the emergency-hose cap, return the hose to its clip, and close the access panel.

How to clean a top-load lint filter
Only follow this method if your top-load model has a removable lint-filter assembly and its manual supports the procedure. Samsung Australia’s guidance for its products is:

How often should you clean each filter?
- Front-load pump filter, U.S. guidance: Samsung recommends cleaning at least once a month or approximately every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent. Samsung U.S. cleaning guide
- Pump filter, Australian guidance: Samsung Australia recommends cleaning five to six times a year. This is regional advice, not a universal interval. Samsung Australia pump-filter guide
- Water-hose mesh filter, Australian guidance: Samsung Australia recommends cleaning one or two times a year. Samsung Australia hose-mesh guide
- Top-load lint filter: Follow the interval in your model’s manual; the cited Australian cleaning guidance does not establish a universal schedule for all markets and models.
These intervals differ by component and region. Use the recommendation for your washer’s market and model rather than combining them into one schedule.

If cleaning the filter does not solve a draining or spinning problem
A clogged pump filter is one possible explanation for poor draining or spinning, not a definitive diagnosis. If the problem continues after you have cleaned and reinstalled the correct filter, check Samsung’s washer spinning troubleshooting guide and the manual for your model. Do not assume that a top-load washer has the front-load pump filter described above.
