The best choice is the exact model that fits your opening and delivery route, matches how your household stores food, has service coverage where you live and offers warranty terms you understand. Reliability data in the United States currently favors Whirlpool over LG in the two refrigerator styles measured by the 2025 J.D. Power study, but that study does not publish a comparable Samsung result, so it cannot rank all three brands overall.
Start by choosing a configuration—French-door, side-by-side, four-door or freezer-on-top/bottom—then compare same-size models on dimensions, usable storage, ice and water hardware, warranty coverage, authorized repair access, price and EnergyGuide data.

Quick verdict: choose the model and service network, not a logo
Samsung, LG and Whirlpool each sell several refrigerator formats, from basic top-freezer units to feature-heavy French-door and four-door designs. A brand-level verdict hides the differences between those models. A counter-depth French-door refrigerator can have very different storage, dispenser hardware and repair needs from a standard-depth side-by-side made by the same company.

Use brand reputation only as a starting point. The purchase decision should be made at the model level after you confirm four things:

Whirlpool has a measurable advantage over LG in the 2025 J.D. Power side-by-side and French-door reliability results, but Samsung was not reported for those categories in the published comparison. Treat the figures as population averages, not a promise about an individual refrigerator.
Choose the refrigerator configuration before the brand
Configuration determines reach, freezer organization and the amount of usable width more than the badge on the door. Compare models within the same layout and approximate capacity.
| Configuration | Access and organization | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| French-door | Wide refrigerator shelves at eye level; freezer drawers below; useful for large platters. | Lower drawers require bending; two upper doors need swing clearance; ice makers and water dispensers vary by model. |
| Side-by-side | Refrigerator and freezer contents are both vertically accessible; doors do not need as much swing space. | Narrow compartments can limit wide pizzas, trays and large containers. |
| Four-door or flex-door | Separate compartments can let you assign zones or change a compartment’s purpose on selected models. | More doors, seals, controls and ice hardware mean more components to evaluate and maintain. |
| Top- or bottom-freezer | Usually a straightforward layout; top-freezer designs put the freezer at eye level, while bottom-freezer designs prioritize refrigerator access. | Fewer premium organization features on many models; exact capacity and dispenser options are model-specific. |
Whirlpool’s U.S. catalog lists French-door, side-by-side, counter-depth and four-door choices, as well as adjustable organization, ice and water configurations and smart integration on selected refrigerators. Those are catalog categories, not features included on every model. See the current catalog at Whirlpool’s refrigerator listings.
Measure the kitchen and delivery route
Measure the finished opening, not just the old refrigerator. Record width at the narrowest point, height to the underside of cabinets, available depth, door-swing space and the clearance needed for ventilation. Then measure hallways, stair landings, elevator doors and the entrance to the room. Handles and doors can make the delivery width larger than the cabinet specification.
Counter-depth versus standard-depth
Whirlpool describes counter-depth models as aligning more closely with cabinets, while standard-depth models generally provide more storage. Counter-depth is not a universal dimension; door and handle projection still extend beyond the cabinet line. Use the exact installation guide for the model you plan to order.
For a concrete example, Whirlpool lists the WRFC2036RZ as a 36-inch French-door counter-depth refrigerator with 20 cubic feet of capacity and a listed depth of 29-3/8 inches. That specification is an example for that model, not a capacity or depth to assume for another 36-inch refrigerator. Confirm top, side, rear and door-open clearances in the model’s installation documentation before purchase.

- Opening width at the floor, counter and upper cabinet levels.
- Overall height, including the required hinge or top clearance.
- Cabinet depth, door and handle projection.
- Door swing or drawer pull-out space beside walls and islands.
- Rear and side ventilation space specified by the manufacturer.
- Water-line and electrical locations, if the model uses them.
- A delivery path wide enough for the packaged unit and a safe way to remove doors if required.
What the reliability evidence actually says
The strongest directly comparable figures available here are from J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability and Service Study. J.D. Power reports problems per 100 appliances (PP100); a lower number means fewer problems reported on average. The study covered major appliances purchased one to three years earlier and collected 12,755 reliability responses and 1,419 service responses online in June and July 2025.

|---|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side | 60 PP100 | 68 PP100 | Not stated |
| French-door | 68 PP100 | 74 PP100 | Not stated |
Read the complete release at J.D. Power’s 2025 study. The results support a narrower conclusion: in this survey population, Whirlpool owners reported fewer problems on average than LG owners in the two named styles. They do not establish that every Whirlpool model is more reliable than every LG model, and they do not rank Samsung against either brand.
A separate Consumer Reports search-result summary for a 2026 article estimates that 30 percent of refrigerators with icemakers will have a problem by the end of the fifth year. The full article was not accessible for verification, so use the figure only as a general warning about icemaker complexity—not as a ranking of Samsung, LG or Whirlpool. The summary is at Consumer Reports’ refrigerator reliability page.
What each brand’s available evidence tells you
Whirlpool: broad format choice and the clearest favorable comparison here
Whirlpool’s U.S. catalog covers French-door, side-by-side, counter-depth and four-door refrigerators. Selected models advertise adjustable storage, different ice and water arrangements and smart-home integration. Confirm each feature on the exact model number; a catalog category does not mean every unit includes a dispenser, dual ice maker or connected controls.
Whirlpool is the lower-PP100 brand in both J.D. Power comparisons available for this article: 60 versus LG’s 68 for side-by-side units and 68 versus 74 for French-door units. Those are survey averages, not a guarantee, and they do not cover every refrigerator style or Samsung.
Samsung: extensive format range, with warranty terms that require careful reading
Samsung’s U.S. refrigerator range includes Bespoke, French-door, 4-Door Flex, Family Hub, side-by-side and top-freezer lines. Features and availability vary by model, so compare the specification sheet rather than the series name.
Rank #3
- Large Capacity, 21 Cu. Ft.
- Factory Installed Automatic Ice Maker
- ENERGY STAR Qualified
Samsung’s current U.S. warranty page says most refrigerators typically include one year of parts and labor, five years of parts and labor for the sealed refrigeration system, and ten years for the digital inverter compressor part. The ten-year statement is for the compressor part, not automatically ten years of labor or a ten-year comprehensive warranty. Exact model terms, exclusions and claim procedures control; read them at Samsung’s refrigerator warranty page.
LG: compare the exact model instead of extrapolating a survey score
The evidence available here supports LG’s style-specific J.D. Power results, but not a current official LG model catalog comparison or a verified warranty summary. Before buying, obtain the model’s specification sheet and warranty language, then compare its labor period, sealed-system coverage, compressor terms and exclusions with the competing models.
Warranty length is not the same as repair protection
Separate every warranty into the component covered, the length of coverage and whether labor is included. A long compressor-parts period can still leave you paying diagnostic, travel or labor charges after a shorter comprehensive period ends. Check whether the warranty requires an authorized provider, excludes cosmetic parts or water damage, and limits coverage to the original purchaser or installation region.

Check local authorized service before ordering
Repair access varies by location, even for a nationally sold brand. RTINGS’ ongoing U.S. service-coverage test includes Samsung, LG and Whirlpool. Its map had tested 522 contiguous-U.S. locations and was last updated January 12, 2026. The 522 figure is a test sample, not the number of service centers, and the accessible page does not declare a national winner. Use the map at RTINGS’ refrigerator service-coverage test as one check, then call the manufacturer or a local authorized provider with the exact model number.
Ask whether the provider services your ZIP code, stocks common parts, handles sealed-system work and will honor the manufacturer warranty. A nearby independent appliance shop may be useful for out-of-warranty repairs, but verify authorization for warranty claims.

Compare ice, water and smart features by how you will use them
Choose the least complicated setup that satisfies your household. An external dispenser is convenient but uses door space and adds plumbing and control components. Internal water keeps the exterior cleaner. Dual ice can help a household that fills coolers, while a refrigerator without a plumbed feature avoids filter replacements and water-line risks.
- Identify whether you need cubed ice, crushed ice, a large-batch bin or occasional ice only.
- Check whether the ice maker is in the door, refrigerator compartment or freezer and how much shelf or bin space it consumes.
- Confirm the water-filter part number and replacement interval for the exact model; do not assume a filter fits because the brand is the same.
- For Wi-Fi or display features, verify that the controls remain usable if connectivity or an app account is unavailable.
Do not treat extra mechanisms as certain failures. Treat them as additional components whose convenience should justify their purchase price and potential service requirements.
Capacity and interior organization matter more than the headline number
Compare usable capacity and shelf layout, not only the cubic-foot figure. A side-by-side may have a similar advertised capacity to a French-door model but less horizontal room for wide dishes. Examine shelf height, gallon-door storage, freezer drawer tiers, divider positions and whether shelves can be removed for cleaning.
List the foods your household actually stores: sheet pans, tall bottles, frozen pizzas, meal-prep containers and bulk packages. Bring those measurements to a showroom or compare interior diagrams and photographs. A nominally larger refrigerator is not better if its shelves waste the shapes you use every day.
A step-by-step buying process
- Select the layout. Decide between French-door, side-by-side, four-door or top-/bottom-freezer based on access and freezer-width needs.
- Set the physical envelope. Measure opening, depth, swing, ventilation and delivery route, then write the maximum dimensions down.
- Shortlist same-size models. Compare Samsung, LG and Whirlpool units with the same configuration and similar capacity; do not compare a 20-cubic-foot counter-depth French-door unit with a much larger standard-depth model and call the difference a brand effect.
- Audit the interior. Check shelf adjustability, drawer dimensions, door bins, freezer organization and the location of the ice maker.
- Choose water and ice hardware. Decide on external or internal dispensing, dual ice, a filter and whether plumbing is practical.
- Read the exact warranty. Record parts and labor periods, sealed-system and compressor language, exclusions and service requirements.
- Verify service locally. Contact an authorized provider with the model number and your ZIP code; ask about sealed-system repairs and parts availability.
- Compare ownership cost. Use current retailer prices, delivery and installation charges, haul-away fees, filter costs and the exact EnergyGuide label.
- Confirm before delivery. Recheck dimensions, door removal requirements, water-line location and the return policy. Inspect for shipping damage before signing.
How to make the final brand decision
| If your priority is… | How to decide |
|---|---|
| Survey evidence for side-by-side or French-door reliability | Whirlpool has the lower PP100 figures than LG in the 2025 J.D. Power results; Samsung is not reported in those comparisons. |
| A specific smart or flexible-door feature | Compare the exact Samsung, LG or Whirlpool model specification and confirm the feature remains useful without an app or subscription. |
| A cabinet-aligned appearance | Shortlist counter-depth models, then verify their reduced storage and complete door/handle projection. |
| Maximum storage | Look first at standard-depth models and usable shelf and drawer dimensions; Whirlpool says standard-depth units generally offer more storage. |
| Predictable repairs | Choose the model with an authorized provider near you, clear parts-and-labor terms and a layout without hardware you do not need. |
Price and energy comparisons still require live model data
Current like-for-like prices and energy-use figures for Samsung, LG and Whirlpool were not established in the available evidence. Prices change by retailer, promotion, region, finish and delivery date. Compare models with the same configuration and capacity, include installation and haul-away, and read each unit’s EnergyGuide label rather than assuming one brand is cheaper or more efficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecord the estimated annual energy use and local electricity rate if operating cost matters. A larger refrigerator, an external dispenser or a second ice maker can change consumption, but only the exact EnergyGuide value gives you a model-specific basis for comparison.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by brand reputation alone: Build a same-configuration shortlist and compare model numbers.
- Measuring only the cabinet opening: Include handles, door swing, ventilation and the complete delivery route.
- Assuming counter-depth means counter-flush: Check door and handle projection and the manufacturer’s clearance diagram.
- Reading “10-year compressor warranty” as full coverage: Separate parts from labor and identify the sealed-system period.
- Extrapolating J.D. Power scores to every style: The published figures cover only side-by-side and French-door refrigerators and do not include Samsung.
- Ignoring local service: Verify an authorized provider for your ZIP code before paying for delivery.
- Buying an ice maker you do not need: Weigh dispenser convenience against plumbing, filters, space and repair complexity.
- Comparing advertised capacity without inspecting the interior: Measure the shelves, drawers and door bins against the foods you store.
Bottom line
For a U.S. buyer choosing among these three brands, Whirlpool is the only one with lower reported PP100 figures than LG in both J.D. Power refrigerator styles cited here, while Samsung cannot be placed on that table from the published results. That evidence is useful but incomplete. The right purchase is the exact refrigerator that fits your kitchen, provides the organization and ice/water setup you will use, has clear parts-and-labor coverage and can be repaired by an authorized technician in your area.
