Many newer Samsung Galaxy phones use USB-C, but Samsung has never used one connector across every generation. Samsung’s support lists classify Galaxy S8 through S25 families, listed Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip generations, Note8 and later listed Note models, and many Galaxy A phones as USB Type-C. Older examples such as the Galaxy S5, S6, S7, Note5, Galaxy A6, and several Galaxy J models use Micro USB Type B instead.
The reliable way to buy a cable or charger is to identify the exact phone model first. A USB-C plug can charge a compatible Galaxy and connect it to a computer, but the connector shape alone does not tell you the phone’s charging speed or which charger features it supports.

The short answer: newer Galaxy models usually use USB-C
Samsung’s published model lists show a clear transition toward USB-C, not a single company-wide changeover date. The Galaxy S8 and later S generations shown by Samsung Canada, through the S25 family, are listed with USB Type-C. Samsung also lists USB-C versions of its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip families, Note8, Note9 and Note10, and numerous Galaxy A models.
Several earlier phones remain Micro USB devices. Samsung’s examples include Galaxy S5, S6, S6 edge, S7 and S7 edge, Note5, Galaxy A6, and Galaxy J3 and J7 models. These examples demonstrate why the family name or purchase year is not enough: connector type is determined by the specific model and, in some cases, by the regional or special-edition variant.

Samsung does not publish one adoption percentage or one year in which every Galaxy phone changed ports. Its support material is organized as model lists, so use those lists as a guide and verify the handset you actually own.
Samsung models listed with USB Type-C
The following summary reflects Samsung Canada’s support list. “Listed” matters: a model family can contain regional variants, carrier versions or special editions that are not shown on the page. Check the model number on the phone when an exact match matters.
| Galaxy family | USB-C models Samsung lists | What that means when buying accessories |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S | S8, S9, S10, S20, S21, S22, S23, S24 and S25 families | A USB-C cable is the matching cable type for the listed phones. |
| Galaxy Z | Listed Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip generations | Confirm the exact Fold or Flip generation before ordering a replacement cable. |
| Galaxy Note | Note8, Note9 and Note10 families | These listed Note models use USB-C; earlier Note models need checking. |
| Galaxy A | A13, A14 5G, A15 5G, A23 5G, A25 5G, A32 5G, A42 5G, A51, A52 5G, A53 5G and A54 5G | The A-series name alone is not sufficient; match the model designation, including the 5G label where present. |
This is a representative list rather than a claim that every Galaxy S, Z, Note or A phone has the same connector. Samsung’s support page is the authority for the particular edition you are checking.

A Micro USB phone needs a cable with a Micro USB phone-end connector. A USB-C cable is not a substitute simply because the wall charger has a USB-C socket. Match the connector that actually plugs into the handset.
Why checking the exact model is more dependable than guessing from the series
Samsung’s own examples contain several reasons to avoid shortcuts:
- Generations change at different times. The S8 is listed as USB-C, while the S7 and S7 edge are listed as Micro USB.
- Related products can differ. The Note8, Note9 and Note10 are listed as USB-C, while Note5 is listed as Micro USB.
- The A-series spans many connector generations. Samsung lists both newer USB-C A models and the older Micro USB A6.
- Regional and special editions may not appear in a general list. Treat Samsung’s list as a model-level reference and verify the number printed in your phone’s software.
Do not infer a charging standard, data rate or fast-charging capability from the presence of a USB-C port. USB-C identifies the connector family; the phone and charger determine the supported charging behavior.

- Open Settings on the phone.
- Select About phone.
- Read the displayed device name and model number.
- Use that complete model designation when checking Samsung’s charger guidance or buying a cable.
Record the full model information rather than only a marketing family name. For example, an A-series label with a 5G suffix should be matched to the corresponding entry, and a Z Fold or Z Flip should be identified by its generation.
If the phone cannot be powered on, read the model information from its original packaging or purchase documentation and compare it with Samsung’s support list. Avoid ordering solely on the basis of a photograph of a similar-looking phone.
What a USB-C cable does on a compatible Galaxy
Charging
Samsung says a USB-C cable can charge a compatible phone. The cable connects the phone to a wall charger, computer or other compatible power source; the phone and charger negotiate the behavior they support.

Reversible insertion
Samsung describes USB-C as reversible: it can be plugged in either way. You should not need to rotate the plug repeatedly to find an orientation that fits. If a connector does not seat easily, stop and recheck that it is the correct connector rather than forcing it.
USB-C does not guarantee a particular charging speed
Connector shape and charging performance are separate questions. Samsung’s charger guidance instructs users to check the device model and the compatible charger because charging behavior varies by device and charger.
When selecting a replacement, verify two items independently:
- Connector compatibility: the phone end must be USB-C for a listed USB-C Galaxy, or Micro USB for a listed Micro USB model.
- Supported charging feature: confirm that the charger is compatible with the exact phone and the charging feature you want. Do not assume that every USB-C cable or wall charger delivers the phone’s maximum rate.
A USB-C cable can fit the port and still be unsuitable for the charging performance you expect if the charger or phone does not support that behavior. Samsung’s published material does not establish one universal charging rate for all USB-C Galaxy phones.

Choosing the right cable and charger
Use this decision process before buying
- Identify the phone. Go to Settings > About phone and note the model number.
- Confirm the connector. Compare the model with Samsung’s USB Type-C and Micro USB lists.
- Choose the phone-end plug. Select USB-C for a USB-C model or Micro USB for a Micro USB model.
- Check the charger. Use Samsung’s compatibility guidance for the model and the desired charging feature.
- Check the cable’s other end. Make sure it matches the port on your wall charger or computer. A phone-end match alone does not guarantee that the cable connects to your chosen power source.
- Keep the model information. Save the model number with the purchase record so future cable replacements are based on the same verified information.
| Your situation | Correct approach | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Listed USB-C Galaxy and a USB-C wall charger | Use a USB-C cable whose phone end matches the handset, then verify charger compatibility for that model. | That the USB-C connector alone guarantees a specific charging speed. |
| Listed USB-C Galaxy and computer connection | Use a compatible USB-C cable for charging or the wired computer connection. | That every cable offers identical charging or data behavior. |
| Listed Micro USB Galaxy | Buy a cable with a Micro USB phone-end connector. | That a USB-C phone cable will fit an older Micro USB handset. |
| Unidentified Galaxy | Find the device name and model number under Settings > About phone before ordering. | That the phone’s series name is enough to identify the port. |
Be cautious with adapters
Samsung’s support guidance cautions against using a dual USB-C adapter with its Galaxy phone or tablet. If an accessory uses two USB-C connections or an unusual conversion arrangement, check Samsung’s compatibility information for the exact device instead of assuming that the plugs make it safe or supported.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by phone age alone
Age is only a clue. The S7 generation appears in Samsung’s Micro USB examples, while S8 is in the USB-C list. Use the model number, not an estimate of when the phone was released.
Buying by family name alone
“Galaxy A” covers models with different connector types. The A6 is listed as Micro USB, while A13, A14 5G, A15 5G, A23 5G, A25 5G, A32 5G, A42 5G, A51, A52 5G, A53 5G and A54 5G are listed as USB-C. Include the number and any 5G designation in your search.

The socket on the wall charger and the connector at the phone are separate choices. A charger can have a USB-C output while the phone requires Micro USB, provided the cable has the correct ends. Select the cable around both devices.
Assuming a compatible plug means maximum speed
Physical fit establishes only basic connector compatibility. Samsung says to check the model and compatible charger for charging behavior. Treat speed claims as model-and-charger specific.
Troubleshooting a cable or charging problem
The plug will not fit
- Stop pushing and remove the cable.
- Check the model in Settings > About phone.
- Compare it with Samsung’s USB-C and Micro USB model lists.
- Use the matching phone-end connector. A Micro USB phone and a USB-C phone require different cables.
The phone charges, but more slowly than expected
- Confirm the exact phone model.
- Check that the wall charger is listed as compatible for that model.
- Verify that the charging feature you expect is supported by both the phone and charger.
- Do not use the connector shape as proof of a particular rate.
The phone will not connect to a computer
- Confirm that the phone uses the connector on the cable you selected.
- Use a USB-C cable for a listed USB-C Galaxy and ensure the cable is suitable for a computer connection.
- Recheck the model and accessory compatibility before replacing the phone or charger.
You have a regional or special-edition device
Samsung notes that its model list is a guide. Record the complete model number and seek the charger guidance for that exact device rather than relying on a visually similar regional version.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Model name and number recorded from Settings > About phone.
- Connector confirmed against Samsung’s model-level list.
- Phone-end plug selected: USB-C or Micro USB.
- Other cable end matched to the wall charger or computer.
- Charger compatibility checked for the exact handset.
- Desired charging feature verified separately from connector type.
- Any dual USB-C adapter reviewed against Samsung’s caution before use.
Bottom line
Most newer Samsung Galaxy phones use USB-C, including the listed S8-through-S25 generations, many Z Fold and Z Flip models, Note8 through Note10, and numerous newer Galaxy A phones. Older examples such as S5 through S7, Note5, A6 and several J models use Micro USB. Because exceptions exist within and between families, identify the exact model in Settings > About phone, match the cable’s phone-end connector, and check the charger’s supported behavior separately. USB-C makes insertion reversible and supports charging and computer connections, but it is not a guarantee of a particular charging speed.
