If your Samsung TV plays HDMI audio but shows a black screen, first press Home or Menu. If the TV menu appears, the display is working; focus on the selected input, HDMI connection, cable, or connected device. If the menu and the TV’s Picture Test are also blank, the TV itself may need service.
Start by checking whether the TV can display its own menu
- Press Home or Menu on the Samsung remote.
- If the menu appears, confirm that the TV is set to the HDMI input where your device is connected. Make sure the external device is powered on and awake.
- If the menu does not appear, try the Picture Test described below. A missing menu alone does not identify the cause, but it makes an HDMI cable-only fault less certain.
Samsung notes that sound with a black screen can stem from an external device. Its support guidance also treats “No Signal,” “Weak Signal,” and “Mode Not Supported” as distinct messages with different checks: Samsung TV error-message guidance.

Check the input, connections, cable, and source device
- Verify the selected HDMI input on the TV and the output connection on the source device. Check that both devices are on.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Confirm that it is seated in the intended HDMI ports.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV, then test another external device if one is available.
- Substitute a known-working HDMI cable if possible. Change one component at a time—port, cable, then source device—so you can tell which change restores the picture.
If a different device works on the same TV port and cable, investigate the original source device. If the original device works on another port, the first port may be implicated. A successful swap narrows the fault; it does not by itself prove which component failed.

Samsung’s menu paths vary by model and region. On US models from 2022 onward, the listed path is All Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > HDMI Troubleshooting. Earlier models may use Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Signal Information > HDMI Cable Test. Look for the equivalent option in your TV’s menus if those labels do not match.

The test is model-dependent and intended for HDMI cables shorter than 2 m. Samsung cautions that results with a longer cable may not be reliable. If the test or a known-working cable substitution points to a cable fault, replacing the cable may be appropriate; do not assume every black screen requires a new one. For 4K at 120 Hz, Samsung says to use a certified HDMI 2.1 cable.

Use the Picture Test to check the TV’s display
The Picture Test displays an image generated by the TV, helping separate a TV-side picture problem from an HDMI-source problem. On US models from 2022 onward, Samsung lists All Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. Earlier models may use Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test; labels can differ.
- The test image looks normal: Return to the HDMI input, cable, port, and source-device checks. The TV can display its own image, so the HDMI path remains the priority.
- The test image also has a problem or does not appear: A TV-side picture issue is possible. Contact Samsung support for service guidance rather than treating the HDMI cable as the confirmed cause.
If the screen says “Mode Not Supported”
This message points to a signal-format issue, so check the source device’s output resolution against the resolutions supported by your TV. Samsung’s guidance for this message also recommends power-cycling the devices in sequence, trying a shorter cable, and setting the source to a fixed supported resolution. These are targeted steps for “Mode Not Supported,” not universal fixes for every black screen.

Update the TV only after the basic checks
A software update may correct bugs, but it is not a guaranteed fix for this symptom. After checking the input, cable, and source device, look for an update. On US models from 2022 onward, Samsung lists All Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now; older models may use Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.

Contact Samsung support if the Picture Test indicates a TV-side problem, or if testing another port, cable, and source device does not restore the picture. The exact cause cannot be determined from audio alone; it depends on what appears in the TV menu and Picture Test and on the results of swapping the HDMI components. Samsung Philippines also outlines cable, port, and external-device checks in its black-screen troubleshooting guide.
