Samsung TV support for HDMI 2.1 features and 4K at 120 Hz depends on the exact model, screen size, region and HDMI input—not just the series name or an “HDMI 2.1” label. Before buying, confirm the full model code and size against Samsung’s official specifications, then check which port supports your target signal. Your console or PC and HDMI cable must support it too.
What to verify on the exact TV
Start with the complete regional model code and screen size shown in the listing or on the product label. A series name alone may conceal size-specific exceptions, and port capabilities can differ even among inputs on the same TV. Samsung says feature availability can vary by model and country; use its UK 4K/120 Hz Game Mode model list as a guide to the examples it covers, not as a complete list for every market or model year.

- Resolution and refresh rate: Confirm that the exact size supports 4K/120 Hz—or a higher refresh rate if that is your target.
- Port assignment: Identify the specific HDMI input that supports the signal. Verify VRR and eARC separately; they may not be available on the same inputs.
- Gaming features: Check for VRR and Game Mode or ALLM as needed. An HDMI-version label by itself does not confirm every feature you want.
- Connection fit: Check whether the available high-refresh inputs leave enough suitable connections for your console, PC and audio equipment.
Which HDMI port supports 4K at 120 Hz?
There is no single port number that applies to every Samsung TV. Samsung’s UK support page commonly lists HDMI 4 for 4K/120 Hz Game Mode on the model examples it covers. Its current setup guidance also says some TVs have more than one input for 4K/120 Hz. Check the precise model’s documentation and look for a high-refresh gaming designation, which may include a controller icon.

The difference between ports can affect how you wire the rest of your setup. For example, Samsung’s 2021 QN85A specifications assign FRL 4K/120 Hz to HDMI 4, VRR to all ports and eARC to HDMI 3. The QN90A specifications also place eARC on port 3 and state that 4K/120 FPS is not supported on its 43-inch model. These are model-specific examples, not a rule for other years or sizes: see Samsung’s QN85A specifications and QN90A specifications.

What Samsung’s model lists establish—and what they don’t
Samsung UK’s list includes 2023 examples such as QN900C, QN95C, S95C, S90C, QN90C, QN85C and Q80C, with the 50-inch Q80C excluded from the cited entry. Its 2022 list includes QN900B, QN800B, QN700B, QN95B, S95B, QN90B, QN85B, Q80B (excluding 50-inch) and Q70B. For these entries, Samsung identifies HDMI 4 for 4K/120 Hz Game Mode.
The same UK page lists many 2021 QLED and Neo QLED models and The Frame with HDMI 4; certain 8K lines—QN700A, QN800A, QN900A and QN95A—are listed as supporting the feature on all HDMI inputs. The 2020 table also names supported examples, commonly with HDMI 4. The page was last updated July 31, 2023, so these entries should not be treated as a current, universal catalog.

Samsung US provides a separate NVIDIA graphics card compatibility guide listing supported TV families from 2019 onward. It notes that HDMI 2.1 is on HDMI 4 only for certain generations, and that compatible 2019 models need current TV software to enable HDMI 2.1 support. Use that guide alongside—not instead of—the specifications for the exact model, size and region you plan to buy.
Do you need an HDMI 2.1 cable for 120 Hz?
For 4K/120 FPS, Samsung recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Samsung US Support states: “You must use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for features like 4K @ 120 FPS or 8K @ 60 FPS.” Check that the console or PC and the TV input also support the target signal; a suitable cable cannot add a capability the TV port lacks. See Samsung’s PC and Samsung TV guidance and its 4K/120 Hz setup instructions.

Set up the connection after you buy
- Connect the source to the verified input. Use the HDMI port Samsung identifies for the target refresh rate on your exact TV. Do not rely on the port number from another model.
- Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. This is Samsung’s recommendation for features such as 4K/120 FPS; the source device must support the same signal.
- Enable Game Mode if needed. Samsung says a console may activate Game Mode automatically, while a PC connection may require enabling it manually in Quick settings.
- Check Input Signal Plus for that input. Samsung’s setup instructions include this setting when enabling the signal. Menu labels and behavior vary by model and software.
- Install available TV software updates. Samsung notes that compatible 2019 models require current software for HDMI 2.1 support. Its setup pages also warn that menus and screenshots can differ by model and software version.
- Assign audio separately. If a soundbar or receiver uses eARC, verify which HDMI port provides it before finalizing the wiring. It may be different from the high-refresh gaming input.
How to compare two Samsung TVs before buying
Compare the full model codes for the same region and the exact screen sizes you are considering. Use Samsung’s model-specific specification or support pages to fill in each point rather than assuming the answer from a series name.
