First check whether the TV can display its Home or Menu screen, then check the input and connected device. A flashlight test can help indicate a backlight-system problem, but it cannot identify which internal component failed.
Start with the TV’s menu and connected devices
Press Home or Menu on the remote. If the menu appears, the TV is on; the problem may be the selected source, cable, signal, or external device. Samsung says an appearing menu means the TV is powered on but may be on the wrong source or not receiving a signal (Samsung US troubleshooting guidance).

- Confirm the TV is set to the input used by the connected device, and check that the device is powered on.
- Unplug and reconnect the cable at both ends. Try a different HDMI port or cable, if available.
- Test another external device. Some Samsung models also provide an HDMI cable test; availability and recommended cable length vary by model, so follow the instructions for your TV.
Samsung’s black-screen guidance recommends checking the menu, HDMI connection where supported, and other external devices before requesting service. If the Home or Menu screen appears, an internal backlight or power-board failure is not established.

In a dim room, hold a flashlight close to the screen and look for a faint menu or image. If you can make one out, the TV is producing a picture that is not being illuminated normally. That points toward the backlight system, but does not prove which part is responsible.

Possible causes include the LED backlight strips, the power supply or LED-driver circuitry, and circuitry that controls the backlights. A faint image is therefore a clue, not a specific parts diagnosis. If no faint image is visible, that result does not prove the power supply is faulty; other display and control problems can also leave the screen black. Read standby-light symptoms cautiously
A blinking standby light can indicate a power-related problem, but it does not by itself identify a failed power supply board. A black screen with no standby light is also inconclusive: the TV may be on without a visible display, or it may not be receiving power. Check that the power connection is seated and follow model-appropriate external troubleshooting before considering internal repair. Samsung notes that a missing menu can raise concern about power, but the symptom alone is not a component diagnosis.

What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you

These checks narrow the possibilities; symptoms alone cannot settle which component needs repair.

When to stop troubleshooting and get service
If the menu, cable, input, and alternate-device checks do not restore the picture, Samsung’s guidance is to request service. A qualified TV repairer can make model-specific measurements and distinguish a failed LED strip from a driver, power-supply, or control-circuit problem.

Internal inspection is not a casual next step. The power-supply area marked HOT can carry appreciably higher voltages. Do not open the TV or perform live tests unless you are equipped and qualified to work safely on electronics. iFixit describes internal checks as part of a repair workflow, not as a universal consumer test; component behavior and procedures can vary by model.

Do not buy a backlight strip or board based only on the words “Samsung TV.” A backlight replacement must match the exact model and panel; a power-supply or LED-driver board must also match the relevant board number. The model, panel revision, and board number are not provided by the symptom, so no universal replacement part can be named.
