To take a selfie with a Samsung tablet, open the Camera app, tap the switch-camera icon to select the front camera, frame your shot, and tap Capture. The photo is saved in Gallery. If your model supports a timer or palm gesture, you can also take the picture hands-free.
Take a selfie with the front camera
- Open Camera. Launch the built-in Camera app on your Galaxy tablet.
- Switch to the front camera. In the camera preview, tap the switch-camera icon, usually shown as arrows. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet Camera guide describes using the front camera for selfies.
- Compose the shot. Center your face in the preview and adjust the tablet until you have the framing you want. On some models, grid lines can help with composition; the option is not available on every tablet.
- Capture the photo. Tap Capture. The image is saved in Gallery.
Take a selfie without touching the shutter
A timer or palm gesture can help when the tablet is positioned out of reach. These options depend on the model and software.

Use a timer
Open Camera settings and look for a timer option. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S4 guidance lists a timer for the front camera. Set the delay, return to the preview, and tap Capture. Place the tablet on a stable surface or optional stand before starting the countdown.

Use Show Palm
- Open Camera settings and look for Shooting methods, Gesture control, or a similarly named option.
- Enable Show Palm or the equivalent setting if it appears.
- Return to the front-camera preview and hold up your palm toward the camera to trigger the photo.
On the Galaxy Tab A SM-T355, Samsung documents a two-second delay after the gesture. Other models may display a different countdown or use different labels. See Samsung’s Tab A SM-T355 instructions and its Show Palm guidance for Australian device variants for examples.

Choose the capture method that fits
| Method | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| On-screen Capture button | You can comfortably reach the screen while framing the selfie. | Switch to the front camera, then tap Capture. |
| Timer | You want time to position yourself after starting the shot. | Look for a timer in Camera settings; availability varies by model. |
| Show Palm | The tablet is positioned hands-free and you can show your palm to the camera. | Look for Show Palm or an equivalent gesture setting; availability and countdown behavior vary. |
Samsung does not establish that one of these methods produces better photos. A stand is optional, but it can make hands-free positioning easier.

Camera modes and settings vary by tablet model and software version. Samsung’s current US Galaxy tablet guide explicitly notes that available camera modes vary by model. If you cannot find a timer, grid lines, or palm gesture, check Camera settings and the manual for your exact tablet rather than assuming the feature is supported. For a model-specific example, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S4 camera guide covers the SM-T830.
