Choose the Samsung T7 Shield if its published IP65 dust and water resistance is more important than the T9’s higher rated speed. If neither feature decides it, compare the same capacity at current prices and check your host’s USB capabilities before buying.

Which one is faster in your setup?
T9: a higher ceiling with a specific requirement
The T9’s USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface has a 20Gbps link rate, compared with the T7 Shield’s USB 3.2 Gen 2×1 at 10Gbps. To approach the T9’s advertised maximums, Samsung says the host and cable must support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and UASP. A USB-C connector by itself does not confirm that capability; check the computer’s port specifications.

Its stated write ceiling depends on capacity: up to 1,950MB/s for 1TB and 2TB models, and up to 2,000MB/s for the 4TB model. Samsung rates the T7 Shield up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and UASP required for its maximum speeds.

What independent testing suggests
PC Gamer’s 2026 portable SSD guide reports an initial peak-speed advantage for the T9 in its testing, but says both drives delivered close to 1,000MB/s in the cited IOMeter sequential tests outside that initial boost. That result describes PC Gamer’s tested setup, not a universal benchmark; performance depends on the host, cable, environment, and workload.
When is the T7 Shield’s protection worth choosing?
The T7 Shield has the clearer advantage for dusty or wet environments: Samsung lists an IP65 rating based on controlled internal testing. Samsung also says damage caused by liquid or dust is not covered by warranty. Treat IP65 as a defined test rating, not permission to expose the drive to any conditions without risk.

Samsung claims both models can withstand drops of up to 3 meters in controlled tests. Neither is damage-proof, and Samsung says damage caused by drops is not covered by warranty. The T9’s drop claim does not establish an IP-rated level of dust or water resistance.
Which model fits your use?
Choose the T9 for frequent large transfers
The T9 is the better fit when you often move large video, photo, or project files and have a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connection available. If your host lacks Gen 2×2, do not assume the T9’s headline speed will be available; the value of its higher ceiling depends on the rest of your setup.

Choose the T7 Shield for field use
The T7 Shield makes more sense for travel, field work, or other situations where dust and splashes are a concern. It is also 24g lighter than the T9 according to Samsung’s listed weights. The trade-off is a lower rated sequential-speed ceiling and a shorter listed warranty.
For backups and game libraries
For ordinary backups or storing a game library, start with the capacity you need, then compare current prices for that same capacity. Choose based on the ports you actually have and whether the T7 Shield’s IP65 rating matters for where you will use or carry the drive. Neither model is automatically the better choice for every such workload.

For recording iPhone video
Samsung says its internal evaluation found both the T9 and T7 Shield able to record ProRes 4K at 60fps on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max at room temperature, subject to the stated power and sustained-performance conditions. Samsung recommends using the supplied genuine USB-C cable. This finding is specific to those phones and conditions; it should not be generalized to other phones, cameras, or recording setups. See Samsung’s Portable SSD product information FAQ for its compatibility guidance.
Compatibility, formatting, and warranty
Samsung lists Windows, macOS, and Android compatibility for the T9, and broad PC, Mac, Android, and game-console use for the T7 Shield; compatibility can vary by device. Samsung says its portable SSDs can work with USB 2.0 devices, but slower interfaces limit performance. Both drives ship formatted as exFAT, and Samsung says they can be formatted as APFS. Reformatting can affect whether the drive works across the devices in your workflow, so check compatibility before changing the format.

Samsung’s SSD product warranty table lists five years for the T9 and three years for the T7 Shield across the listed capacities. These are limited warranties subject to Samsung’s terms, not coverage for accidental drops or environmental damage.
Check same-capacity prices before you buy
Both models are listed in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Match capacity first, then check live prices and stock: prices and availability change, and a comparable current price for both models is not established here. A Samsung US listing accessed in 2026 showed the 1TB T7 Shield at $287.99, but delivery and pickup were unavailable at that time; that snapshot is not a market price or a meaningful comparison with an older price for the T9.
