Its strongest trade-offs are that those are maximum figures—not guaranteed speeds on every computer—and the standard T7 has no listed IP rating for dust or water. It is a good fit when portability, encryption, and general-purpose speed matter more than rugged protection or the T9’s higher advertised ceiling.

What the T7’s speed figures mean in practice
Samsung’s 2024 datasheet specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), with sequential read speeds up to 1,050 MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s. These are Samsung’s maximum manufacturer figures, not independent benchmark results or a promise that every transfer will reach those speeds. Samsung says the maximum was measured in internal testing with the included cable and that performance may vary with the host configuration, cable, and system environment. Samsung T7 datasheet (2024)

The whole connection matters: the drive, cable, computer port, system, and type of work all affect results. The USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables in the box offer two connector options, but they do not make the drive universally compatible or ensure that every host can use its maximum rated speed. Check the port and workflow on the device you intend to use before buying.

Portability, capacity, and everyday use
The datasheet lists the T7 at 85 × 57 × 8 mm and 72 g, making it a small, light option to carry alongside a laptop or camera kit. Samsung lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. The computer’s reported capacity can be lower than the label because Samsung defines a terabyte in decimal terms while some systems display capacity using a different measurement convention. - SHARE IDEAS IN A FLASH: Don’t waste a second waiting and spend more time doing; The T7 is embedded with PCIe NVMe technology that brings fast read and write speeds up to 1,050/1,000 MB/s¹, making it almost twice as fast as the T5
- ALWAYS MAKE THE SAVE: Compact design with massive capacity; With capacities up to 4TB, save exactly what you need to your drive – from large working files to game data and everything in between
- ADAPTS TO EVERY NEED: Whether using a PC or mobile phone, count on the T7 for extensive compatibility²; It’s a true team player when it comes to heavy-duty application usage or file-saving
- HI RESOLUTION VIDEO RECORDING: Record Ultra High Resolution (4K 60fs) videos directly onto the T7 Portable SSD with your favorite camera or mobile devices; Supports iPhone 15 Pro Res 4K at 60fps video and more³
That combination suits general portable storage, such as moving files between compatible computers or keeping a working copy of large projects. Choose capacity based on the material you need to carry and your backup plan, rather than assuming the labeled capacity will appear exactly as the same number in the operating system.
Encryption and software support
Samsung specifies AES 256-bit hardware encryption. Its UK product page describes password protection using AES 256-bit encryption, so the security feature is useful only if you set it up and can access the required software on your device. Samsung lists Magician support for Windows 10 and later, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and later, and Android 5.1 and later. Firmware updates require an internet connection. Durability: the standard T7 is not the T7 Shield
Samsung’s datasheet reports a 2-meter free-fall test under controlled conditions, but it cautions that drop resistance can vary with actual conditions. Samsung also states that damage caused by a drop is not covered by warranty. Treat the test as limited manufacturer information, not as a reason to handle the drive carelessly or as a guarantee of survival after a fall. Samsung T7 datasheet (2024)
Do not assume the standard T7 is waterproof or dustproof. Samsung’s comparison lists IP65 dust and water resistance for the T7 Shield; that rating belongs to the Shield, not the standard T7. If exposure to dust or water is a regular part of your use, compare the Shield’s protection and limits with your needs rather than transferring its rating to the T7. Samsung’s comparison does not establish an IP rating for the T9. Samsung US portable SSD comparison

Warranty and the need for backups
Samsung lists a three-year limited warranty for the T7. Its warranty terms include exclusions such as misuse, neglect, unauthorized repair, accident, and other external causes. A warranty does not restore files lost through drive failure, damage, or deletion; Samsung explicitly advises customers to back up important data. Keep a separate copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. Samsung consumer storage warranty

Samsung’s comparison presents these drives as options with different priorities. The published maximum speeds and protection distinctions are manufacturer claims; the T9’s higher ceiling does not mean it will be faster in every setup. Check that the host interface and workload can benefit from the advertised speed, and weigh protection, capacity, and price at the time you shop. Samsung US portable SSD comparison
