Use it for instructions specific to this model rather than assuming another Samsung fridge’s steps apply.

CHOICE’s public page does not expose its Expert Rating or detailed results for food freshness, temperature stability, evenness and range, response to outside temperatures, default settings or heat load. Other posters report cooling difficulties, compressor problems, display failures, rust or dents, broken hinges or shelf supports, drawer issues, condensation and frustration with service. These are self-selected accounts with different unit ages and circumstances. They are examples of individual experiences, not evidence of a model-wide defect pattern, failure rate, cause or expected lifespan.

Assess the actual fridge while it is running, and ask the seller about its history. A checklist helps separate visible condition from claims that need proof:

- Cooling: Confirm both compartments cool as expected and the temperature display operates. If the seller allows it, check temperatures with an appliance thermometer rather than relying only on the display.
- Doors and seals: Look for even alignment, seals that sit firmly around the opening, and hinges that move without obvious looseness or damage.
- Shelves and drawers: Check the foldable shelf, shelf supports, bins and drawers for cracks, missing pieces or sticking.
- Interior and exterior: Look for unexplained condensation, rust, dents or signs of water damage.
- Sound and operation: Listen for unusual or persistent noise, and check that controls respond normally.
- Paperwork and support: Request the receipt, confirm any remaining coverage directly with the seller or manufacturer, and check whether repair help and parts are available for the unit.
Samsung’s general refrigerator help topics include “Checkpoints when Samsung Refrigerator does not cool or overcools” and “Why are the side walls of a Samsung refrigerator heating up?” These are general support topics, not proof that either condition is a known SRL458ELS-specific fault. Consult the model manual and Samsung support when diagnosing a particular appliance.
Will it fit your kitchen and access route?
Measure the opening and the path from the entrance to its final position before arranging delivery. Check the model manual for the required clearance and door-reversal instructions, then verify that the actual kitchen layout allows the doors to open and the fridge to be installed safely. Samsung’s support topics include “How much free space should I allow around my refrigerator?”; use the SRL458ELS manual for the model-specific guidance.

How should you judge a used or old-stock SRL458ELS?
Because CHOICE lists the model as discontinued, make the decision around the specific unit, seller and terms rather than assuming it is readily available or that a new-fridge warranty applies. Compare the asking price with the fridge’s condition, delivery cost and plausible repair expense; current market prices have not been established here.
If comparing it with another bottom-mount model, weigh the unit’s verified condition and serviceability, usable layout, installation fit, and energy figures that refer to comparable labels or tests. The 330 kWh/year figure is CHOICE’s listing claim for this model, not a current test. No scored head-to-head comparison with another refrigerator is established.

The SRL458ELS may be worth considering when a particular unit is demonstrably sound, fits the space and is priced with its age and repair risk in mind. Without those checks, the public specifications and divided owner accounts are not enough to establish that an individual fridge is a good buy.
