Buy the tracker that matches your phone. Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is the clear fit for someone who already uses a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and wants SmartThings Find plus UWB-assisted close finding. Tile is the option to investigate when your household uses a wider mix of phones, but you must check the exact Tile model’s current compatibility, battery design and service terms for your country before ordering.
These products do not share one universal finding network. Bluetooth range only describes a tag’s direct connection to a nearby phone; recovering an item that is out of range depends on the relevant app’s finding service and participating devices nearby.

Quick answer: which one should you buy?
| If this describes you | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You use a recent Samsung Galaxy phone and want the tightest Samsung integration | Galaxy SmartTag2 | Samsung requires a compatible Galaxy device, Samsung account and SmartThings Find registration. Supported Galaxy phones can also use UWB-assisted precision features. |
| You use iPhone, a non-Samsung Android phone, or a mixed-phone household | Investigate the exact Tile model | Tile is positioned as the broader-platform alternative, but current model support and feature availability must be checked rather than assumed. |
| You need close-range directional guidance | SmartTag2, only with a UWB-capable Galaxy phone | SmartTag2 includes UWB hardware, but the phone must also support UWB. Bluetooth alone does not provide the same precision experience. |
| You want a replaceable coin-cell battery | SmartTag2 | Samsung specifies a user-replaceable CR2032. Tile battery construction varies by model. |
| You are choosing based on a quoted range or recovery success rate | Neither on headline numbers alone | Published range is a laboratory or manufacturer condition, not a promise of connection or recovery in your home, office or neighborhood. |
The practical decision is therefore not “Samsung versus Tile” in the abstract. It is “which service works with the phone I carry, and which exact model has the battery, durability and subscription terms I can live with?”

Bluetooth is the local link
A tracker broadcasts over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). When your phone is close enough, the app can show that the tag is nearby and usually trigger a sound. Walls, vehicles, metal cabinets, radio interference and the orientation of the tag can reduce usable distance. A number printed in a specification sheet should therefore be treated as an upper-bound test condition, not a guaranteed radius.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
Out-of-range finding uses a service network
If the tag is no longer connected directly to your phone, the app can only update its location when the service receives a report from another participating device. That process is separate from the tag’s BLE range. It also means recovery odds depend on where the item is, how many compatible devices pass near it, whether those devices can report, and how current the last location is. The available product material does not establish a comparable network-size figure or recovery probability for Tile and SmartTag2, so no responsible buyer should treat either as a guaranteed lost-item locator.
SmartTag2’s Samsung-specific layer
Samsung integrates SmartTag2 with SmartThings Find. Samsung’s setup requirements include a compatible Galaxy device, Samsung account sign-in and registration in SmartThings Find. The company also lists BLE and UWB radios. UWB-enabled Galaxy phones can provide the close-finding experience that uses direction and distance information; a phone without UWB cannot unlock those functions merely because the tag contains UWB.
Tile’s platform position
Tile is commonly presented as the less Samsung-specific choice. That does not mean every Tile product has identical support. Compliance records identify Mate model T1801A and Pro model T1701N, but those records do not prove that both remain on sale in every market or describe the complete current retail range. Check the live page for the exact model you intend to buy, including supported iOS and Android versions and any account or service requirements.

Compatibility comes before every other feature
Use SmartTag2 when your main phone is Galaxy
SmartTag2 is designed around Samsung’s account and app ecosystem. Before buying, confirm that your Galaxy model meets the current Android and SmartThings Find requirements shown on Samsung’s regional product page. If you are buying the tag for someone else, check their phone rather than your own: a tag that works well for the purchaser may be a poor gift for an iPhone user or someone carrying a non-Samsung Android phone.
Check Tile by exact model, not by brand name
“Tile” describes a family of products, not one fixed specification. Mate and Pro are separate model designations, and a future or regional model may use a different battery, radio, attachment style or phone requirement. Open the listing for the exact model and verify:
- Supported iOS and Android versions in your country.
- Whether the battery is replaceable and which cell it uses.
- How the tag is attached and whether a hole or separate holder is required.
- Water and dust rating.
- Any account, app or paid-service condition attached to the feature you need.
Mixed households need a deliberate test
If several people may help locate an item, identify which phones they actually carry. A tracker tied to one ecosystem may still be useful to its owner, but other household members may not be able to administer it or contribute reports in the same way. Ask each potential buyer to install the current app and check device support before purchasing a multipack.
Close finding: BLE versus UWB
What SmartTag2’s UWB adds
BLE can tell the app that a tag is nearby and can trigger a ring. UWB can add more precise distance and directional guidance when both the tag and phone support it. Samsung also describes an augmented-reality-assisted finding experience. These features depend on the phone’s hardware, software and regional support; owning a SmartTag2 alone is not enough.
Rank #3
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only.
What to expect without UWB
On a phone without UWB, use the supported Bluetooth-based functions: view the last known location, search while connected and play the tag’s sound when available. If precision guidance is the reason you are considering SmartTag2, confirm UWB support for your exact Galaxy model first.
Do not compare a UWB demo with lost-item recovery
UWB helps when you and the tag are already close. It does not enlarge the out-of-range finding network or guarantee that a stranger’s phone will report your missing keys. Keep local precision and remote recovery as two separate buying criteria.
Battery ownership and maintenance
SmartTag2: a clear, replaceable-cell design
Samsung specifies a replaceable CR2032 battery and advertises up to 500 days under typical usage. “Up to” matters: frequent ringing, repeated close searches, temperature, radio conditions and other usage patterns can shorten the interval. Keep a compatible spare coin cell available and follow the current Samsung instructions for opening the tag safely.

Do not transfer SmartTag2’s battery assumption to Tile. Battery design can differ between Tile models, and the available records do not establish a single rule for the current lineup. Before checkout, look for an explicit statement that the cell is replaceable, identify the exact battery type, and note whether the seller is describing a current or older generation.

Why battery life should not decide the purchase alone
A replaceable cell reduces long-term waste and avoids replacing the whole tag when the battery is exhausted. However, compatibility and the finding service determine whether the tracker can help in the first place. A longer quoted life is irrelevant if the tag cannot be managed by the phone you use.
Range, walls and real-world reliability
Interpreting SmartTag2’s 120 m claim
Samsung lists up to 120 m of Bluetooth distance. The figure is a manufacturer specification under stated test conditions, not a guaranteed indoor range. Expect less through reinforced concrete, multiple floors, vehicles or dense radio environments. Treat the number as a way to compare the radio’s intended capability, not as a promise that a tag at 120 m will always ring.
Why Tile range claims need model and test context
The available Tile material does not provide one complete, current official range figure for every model. A dated Tom’s Guide comparison published April 16, 2026 includes reviewer observations about range and alarm behavior. Those observations belong to that publication’s hardware and test conditions; they are not universal performance guarantees and should not replace the current specification for the model you are buying.

Last location is not live tracking
Bluetooth trackers are designed to help recover belongings, not to provide continuous GPS-style movement. The app may show where a phone last encountered the tag or where a participating device later reported it. If the item is in a quiet location with few participating devices, the map can remain stale even when the tag is functioning normally.

Setup checklist
Set up Galaxy SmartTag2
- Install or update Samsung’s SmartThings app on the compatible Galaxy phone.
- Sign in to the required Samsung account.
- Bring the tag close to the phone and follow the in-app prompt to add it.
- Complete registration in SmartThings Find and allow the permissions the service needs.
- Rename the tag for its item, such as “house keys” or “camera bag,” so alerts are unambiguous.
- Test the ring while the tag is nearby, then check the map and last-location display.
- If you expect UWB guidance, verify that the Galaxy phone is UWB-enabled and that the relevant precision option appears in the app.
Set up a Tile tracker
- Install the current Tile app from your phone’s official app store.
- Create or sign in to the required account, if the selected model requires one.
- Enable the permissions requested for Bluetooth and location-related finding functions.
- Add the exact Tile model shown on the packaging and confirm its name in the app.
- Play the tag’s sound next to the phone to verify the speaker and connection.
- Review the model page for battery replacement, water rating and any service terms before attaching it to an important item.
App labels and permission screens can change. If a step is missing, use the current support instructions for your exact model rather than an older video made for a different generation.
Choose by use case
Keys, wallet or everyday bag
Start with the phone ecosystem. Galaxy users get the most coherent setup from SmartTag2, including Samsung account integration and an available UWB path. For a mixed-phone household, shortlist Tile models that explicitly support every phone likely to manage the item, then compare battery and attachment details.
Luggage and travel gear
Neither product should be treated as a guaranteed airport-recovery system. A tag can provide a useful last-known or participating-device report, but connectivity in baggage areas varies. Select a model with the battery policy and water resistance appropriate for your bag, label it clearly in the app, and test the sound before departure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePet collars
A Bluetooth tracker is not a substitute for a dedicated pet-tracking system. If you still use one as a supplementary tag, confirm that the enclosure, attachment method and ingress rating suit the animal and that the battery can be checked regularly. Do not rely on a nominal range to define a safe search area.
Gifts
Ask what phone the recipient uses before choosing. SmartTag2 is a poor default gift for someone outside the compatible Galaxy ecosystem. Tile may be more flexible, but only after the exact model’s current phone support is confirmed.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Buying by brand instead of phone: Check the recipient’s handset and operating-system version first.
- Assuming every Tile has the same battery: Verify replaceability and cell type for the exact model.
- Treating 120 m as a guaranteed indoor distance: Expect walls and interference to reduce BLE range.
- Confusing UWB with network coverage: UWB improves close finding; it does not create remote reports.
- Assuming the networks are shared: SmartThings Find and Tile operate through their respective services. A nearby phone helping one service does not automatically report to the other.
- Using an old comparison to choose a current model: Confirm generation, regional availability, app support and service terms on the live product page.
- Skipping a sound test: Pair the tag and play its alarm before attaching it to an irreplaceable item.
- Ignoring account access: Make sure the owner can recover the Samsung or Tile account used to register the tag.
Price, availability and subscriptions
No current U.S. price, bundle price or subscription schedule is established here, and those terms can change by model, retailer and date. Compare the live total cost rather than a headline tag price: include the number of tags, replacement batteries, any required holder and any paid feature that matters to your use case. For Tile, perform this check against the exact current model; the Mate and Pro identifiers found in compliance documents do not establish a complete retail catalog.
How to make the final decision
- Identify the primary phone. If it is a compatible Samsung Galaxy, SmartTag2 enters the shortlist. Otherwise, begin with Tile models that explicitly support the phone.
- Decide whether UWB matters. If you want directional close finding, confirm a UWB-enabled Galaxy phone before paying for SmartTag2’s UWB hardware.
- Set your battery requirement. SmartTag2 has a replaceable CR2032. Require an explicit battery statement for any Tile model.
- Check physical conditions. Match the model’s ingress rating, dimensions and attachment method to keys, bags or outdoor use.
- Evaluate the finding service realistically. A network report is opportunistic, not guaranteed, and neither service supplies continuous GPS tracking.
- Verify live regional details. Confirm model generation, app support, price and service terms immediately before purchase.
For a Samsung Galaxy owner, SmartTag2 is the straightforward recommendation because the phone, account, app and optional UWB experience are designed to work together. For everyone else, Tile deserves consideration as a broader-platform route, but the purchase should be made only after the exact model passes the compatibility, battery and service checks above.
