1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse Samsung Smart Switch on the new Galaxy, then choose the route that matches your old phone: wireless transfer for most Galaxy and Android phones, a compatible USB cable for a direct copy, iCloud import for many iPhone transfers, or a computer backup when a direct connection is unsuitable. Smart Switch can move substantial personal content, but it is not a perfect clone. Synced accounts, private app storage, authentication tools, banking apps, protected media and work-managed data may require separate sign-in, export or setup.
Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one. The safest sequence is to prepare both devices, transfer, sign in to your accounts, verify irreplaceable data and only then erase or trade in the old phone.

Choose the right transfer method first
The destination for Samsung Smart Switch transfers is a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet. The source can be another Galaxy, another Android phone or an iPhone, but the available categories depend on the source operating system, model, software version and connection method.

Prepare both phones before transferring
- Charge the devices. Keep both phones connected to chargers during a long wireless transfer if possible. A cable transfer still needs enough battery to finish safely.
- Keep the old phone available. Do not reset it, remove its account or hand it to a trade-in service until verification is complete.
- Install or update Smart Switch. Open the app on both devices if it is not already present. Menu names can differ by One UI and Android version.
- Free enough space on the new Galaxy. Check internal storage before selecting a large photo, video or document library. Samsung’s UK guidance describes a 500 MB minimum internal-storage requirement for its stated Smart Switch use; treat that as support guidance for the applicable devices, not a universal capacity rule.
- Know your account credentials. Have the passwords and verification methods for Google, Samsung, Apple and other accounts ready. Some content reappears only after you sign in.
- Protect sensitive access. Make a separate plan for authenticator apps, banking apps, work profiles, secure folders and encrypted messaging histories.
- Check the connectors if using USB. Confirm the actual ports on both phones. A USB-C charging lead is not automatically a suitable data cable, and some combinations require a compatible adapter.
- Back up irreplaceable material. A second copy of important photographs, documents and chats gives you a recovery option if a category is excluded or an app requires its own export.
Transfer from a Galaxy or Android phone wirelessly
Wireless Smart Switch is the simplest starting point when both phones can run the app and you do not have a suitable cable. Keep the phones close together and avoid switching either one off while the transfer is running. Exact wording varies, but Samsung’s documented flow uses the following labels.
- On the new Galaxy, open Settings, then Accounts and backup, and select Transfer data for device setup or open Smart Switch directly.
- Choose Receive on this phone, then identify the source as Galaxy/Android (the wording may simply say Android).
- On the old phone, open Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone.
- On both phones, select Wireless when Smart Switch asks how to connect.
- Approve the connection request. If either phone asks you to allow access to contacts, files or other content, review the permission and allow the categories you intend to move.
- When the new phone displays the available categories, select what you want. The list can include personal information, media, documents, settings and apps, but it is generated for your particular source and destination.
- Tap Transfer and leave both phones nearby. Avoid opening other demanding apps or separating the devices until Smart Switch reports completion.
- Tap Done on the new phone. Keep the old phone intact while you inspect the transferred content and complete account sign-ins.
Wireless Smart Switch does not require a cable, and Samsung says the phones can remain plugged into chargers during this route. If the connection repeatedly drops, move the phones closer, disable battery-saving restrictions for Smart Switch and restart both devices before trying again.
Use a USB cable for a direct transfer
A wired connection is useful when the phones are close together but wireless pairing is unreliable, or when you prefer a physical link. The exact connector depends on the two phones. Some Lightning-to-USB-C and USB-C-to-USB-C combinations connect directly; other combinations need a compatible USB adapter.

- Open Smart Switch on both devices. On the new Galaxy, choose Receive data; on the old phone, choose Send data.
- Connect the phones. If an adapter or an on-screen USB mode prompt appears, accept the connection and grant the requested permissions.
- Choose the source platform if prompted, then review the categories Smart Switch makes available.
- Select the content to copy and start the transfer. Keep the cable firmly connected and do not use either phone in a way that could strain the ports.
- When Smart Switch reports completion, disconnect only after the app has finished writing the data. Check the new phone before erasing the old one.
Samsung’s support guidance lists USB transfer and possible connector requirements but does not make one cable universal for every model. Match the cable and adapter to both phones and to the data capability of the ports.

Move data from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy
iPhone transfers have two distinct routes. A direct cable can expose more local content than an online import in some situations, while iCloud is useful when you do not have the right cable or the iPhone is not available for a direct connection. Neither route guarantees that every iOS app or private app database will appear on Android.
Direct iPhone-to-Galaxy cable transfer
- On the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch and choose Receive data, then iPhone/iPad.
- Connect the iPhone and Galaxy with a compatible cable and any required adapter. Unlock the iPhone and accept its trust or accessory prompt if shown.
- Follow Smart Switch’s prompts to permit access, select the categories offered and start the import.
- Leave both phones connected until the transfer completes. Inspect the imported contacts, photographs, messages and files before disconnecting.
Samsung has also described a newer direct iOS transfer route with narrow requirements: iOS 26.6 or later on the iPhone, Android 17 or later and One UI 9 or later on the Galaxy. Samsung’s India information additionally notes that this upgraded path excludes mainland China. These are version- and region-specific conditions, not instructions for every iPhone owner. Check the current Samsung and local carrier guidance for your exact models before relying on that route.
Import from iCloud
- On the Galaxy, open Smart Switch and select Receive data, then iPhone/iPad.
- Choose the iCloud option rather than a cable connection.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the data you want to retrieve and complete any verification challenge. You need access to the trusted phone number or device if Apple requests it.
- Review the categories Smart Switch can obtain from iCloud and select the items to import.
- Start the import and wait for it to finish. Sign in to the corresponding accounts on the Galaxy afterward so cloud-synced information can populate normally.
iCloud import depends on what is available through Apple’s cloud services and on the permissions granted during the process. It is not a way to copy every private iPhone app database.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →WhatsApp and other chat histories
Samsung’s general UK Smart Switch explainer says some app data, including WhatsApp chats, does not transfer through the ordinary process. A separate Samsung iPhone-to-Galaxy instruction says a cable is needed for WhatsApp transfer and ties its newer method to iOS 26.6 or later with Android 17 and One UI 9 or later. Because chat migration is app- and version-dependent, follow the current WhatsApp and Samsung instructions for your devices before deleting the old chat history. Do not treat a completed Smart Switch transfer as proof that every conversation was preserved.

Use a computer or external storage as a fallback
Samsung also documents backing up a phone to a computer and restoring that backup to a new Galaxy. This route can be practical when direct wireless pairing fails, when you need an additional copy, or when the source phone must be disconnected between steps.
- Install Samsung’s current Smart Switch computer software on the supported computer.
- Connect the old phone with a compatible USB data cable and approve the connection on the phone.
- Use the computer app’s backup command and wait for it to finish. Keep the backup location available and do not delete it yet.
- Connect the new Galaxy, choose the restore command and select the backup you just made.
- Review the restored categories on the Galaxy, then sign in to accounts and reinstall apps that were not included.
Supported backup categories and external-storage options vary by Galaxy model and source platform. Follow the prompts shown by your version of Smart Switch rather than assuming that a computer image contains every protected app database.
What Smart Switch moves—and what it may leave behind
The transfer list is generated from the connected devices. Samsung describes support for many personal items, media, documents, settings and apps on applicable paths, while also documenting exclusions. Use this table as a planning guide, not a promise that every category will be offered on every phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Category | Typical handling | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts and calendars | Local items may be copied; entries managed by an external account may synchronize after sign-in instead | Open the Contacts and Calendar apps and check counts, groups, birthdays and recent entries |
| Photos and videos | Supported local media can be transferred | Open older albums, camera folders, edited files and videos; check that cloud-only media is available through its account |
| Messages and call history | Supported device data may be imported | Inspect recent and older conversations, attachments and call records |
| Documents and downloads | Supported files can be selected | Check Downloads, recordings, PDFs, work folders and files stored on removable media |
| Settings and home-screen arrangement | Some settings and layout information may transfer | Recheck notification rules, permissions, default apps, alarms and accessibility settings |
| Apps | Smart Switch may reinstall or list compatible apps | Open critical apps; private storage, licenses and protected databases may require separate restoration |
| Synced-account data | Often returns after the relevant account is added to the Galaxy | Sign in and allow synchronization before judging that the data is missing |
| Secure, encrypted or work-managed data | May be restricted or excluded | Use the app owner’s export, recovery or administrator procedure |
Samsung specifically notes that externally synced contacts or calendar items, private app storage and other categories can be excluded depending on the path. Downloaded DRM-protected media, secure-folder content and company-managed profiles can also follow their own policies. The behavior belongs to the individual app, account and device; there is no universal rule that Smart Switch can override those protections.

Separate cloud data from data stored only on the old phone
A cloud account and a local phone copy are not the same thing. If contacts were synchronized with Google, Samsung or another provider, the new Galaxy may show them only after you add that account and enable synchronization. The same principle applies to cloud photo libraries, notes and calendars.
Before wiping the old phone, identify information that exists only locally:
- Camera folders and screenshots that were never uploaded
- Files in Downloads, voice-recording folders and app-specific directories
- Authenticator seeds, recovery codes and passkeys
- Banking, government and work applications that require fresh device registration
- Secure-folder items and encrypted notes
- Chat histories whose app provides a separate export or backup
- Media purchased or downloaded under a license that may require reauthorization
For each item, use the app’s documented export, backup or account-recovery process. Do not copy private database files manually unless the app’s owner explicitly supports that procedure.
Verify the new Galaxy before erasing the old phone
Run this inspection while both devices are still available:

Troubleshoot common Smart Switch problems
The phones do not detect each other wirelessly
- Place the phones within close range and keep both screens unlocked during pairing.
- Restart Smart Switch on both devices, then restart the phones if discovery still fails.
- Install available Smart Switch and system updates, and remove battery restrictions that stop the app in the background.
- Use the USB route if wireless discovery remains unreliable.
The wired transfer stops or shows no data
- Reconnect with a known data-capable cable and inspect both ports for debris or a loose fit.
- Try the correct adapter for the connector combination. A cable that charges one phone may not carry data between two phones.
- Unlock the source phone and accept its USB, trust or permission prompt.
- Restart both phones and begin a new Smart Switch session rather than repeatedly reconnecting during a stalled transfer.
Some content is missing after completion
- Sign in to the account that owned the missing contacts, calendar, notes or photos and allow synchronization.
- Check whether the item belonged to a secure folder, work profile, removable card or private app storage.
- Open the app’s own backup or export settings, particularly for chats, authenticators and banking records.
- Check free storage on the Galaxy; a nearly full destination can prevent selected categories from appearing.
The iCloud import cannot sign in
- Confirm the Apple Account credentials and complete two-factor verification on a trusted device or number.
- Ensure the data you expect is actually present in iCloud under that account.
- If verification or cloud access is unavailable, use a direct cable transfer after resolving the account issue.
Carrier, eSIM and regional considerations
Moving phone content does not automatically move cellular service. eSIM availability and transfer steps vary by carrier and country. Samsung’s India product information notes that eSIM support depends on the carrier. Ask the carrier how to activate or reissue the eSIM on the new Galaxy, and keep the old phone connected until calls, texts and mobile data work on the new device.
Features can also vary by region, model and software release. The version-specific iPhone route described by Samsung is a good example: Android 17, One UI 9 and iOS 26.6 requirements, plus a mainland-China exclusion, do not apply universally. Check the current Samsung support instructions for the country where the phone is being set up.

Safe final handoff
After verification, create a fresh backup from the new Galaxy. Then on the old phone, remove accounts, disable device-finding and payment services, remove the SIM or eSIM according to carrier instructions, and use the device’s factory-reset option. If a work or school administrator manages the phone, follow that organization’s release procedure instead of attempting to bypass its controls.
The reliable way to switch phones is therefore a staged migration: select a compatible Smart Switch route, transfer what the device exposes, restore account-based and app-specific data separately, test the result, and keep the old phone until every important item works on the Galaxy.
