Samsung Separate Ringtones: Set a Unique Sound for Any Contact

On most Samsung Galaxy phones, you assign a separate ringtone from the contact’s own edit screen: open Contacts, select the person, choose Edit and View more, tap Ringtone, pick a sound, return to the contact, and tap Save. You can use a built-in tone or, on supported models, a locally stored audio file. Menus differ by Galaxy model, One UI version, region, dual-SIM configuration, and where the contact is stored.

What a separate contact ringtone does

A contact-specific ringtone overrides the phone’s ordinary incoming-call sound only when that person calls. Everyone else continues to use the default ringtone, unless another contact has also been assigned an individual tone. This is different from changing the phone-wide ringtone in Settings, which affects callers generally.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The setting belongs to the contact record. That means you must edit and save the individual contact; changing Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone alone will not create a caller-specific sound.

Samsung’s support instructions are broadly consistent across regions, but labels and placement can change. The Australian instructions, for example, describe the sequence for Australian-variant devices, while Samsung’s regional guidance warns that screenshots and menus can differ by model and software version. Treat the names below as the usual route, not a guarantee that every Galaxy screen is identical.

Before you begin

Have the correct contact and, if you want a custom sound, the audio file ready. Open the contact card and check whether it is saved to the phone or a synchronized account rather than only to the SIM. SIM-memory contacts are a known limitation for individual ringtones. If you recently imported contacts, there may be two copies; identify the record that appears when you tap the person in the Phone app.

It also helps to note your Galaxy model, One UI version, country or carrier variant, and whether the phone has two SIMs. Samsung’s Australian, Philippine, UK, Indian, and Canadian support pages show the same basic idea but use different labels and layouts. A missing button can therefore indicate a different interface rather than a fault.

Set a built-in ringtone for one contact

  1. Open the Contacts app. If you are viewing a contact from the Phone app, open that person’s full contact card and use its edit control.
  2. Select the person who should receive a unique ringtone.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap View more if the ringtone field is not immediately visible. Samsung places additional contact fields behind this control on many interfaces.
  5. Tap Ringtone.
  6. Choose a tone that is different from the current default. Some phones show Samsung’s built-in sounds in a list; others open a selector with categories or a preview button.
  7. Use the back arrow to return to the contact-edit screen. Do not leave the app before committing the change.
  8. Tap Save. The contact’s next incoming call should use the selected sound.

Built-in tones require no download, conversion, or additional storage. They are the least troublesome option when you need a dependable distinction between callers. You can repeat the procedure for other contacts and choose a different supplied sound for each one, subject to the options exposed by your software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your screen does not show Ringtone

First expand View more and confirm that you are editing the contact rather than merely viewing it. If the field still does not appear, check the contact’s storage location and consult the manual for your exact Galaxy model. Samsung documents that the available fields and menu sequence vary with device and software.

Also check that you opened the standard contact record, not a read-only result from a linked account or a duplicate. If the same person is stored in more than one account, the Phone app may use a different copy from the one you edited. Open the record used for calls, make the change there, and save it.

Use your own music or audio file

A custom ringtone must be a physical audio file saved on the phone. Samsung states that a track available only through Spotify or another streaming catalog cannot be selected directly because it is not stored as a normal local file. Download an audio file that you are entitled to use, then select it from the ringtone picker.

Choose a local file for one contact

  1. Open Contacts, select the person, and tap Edit.
  2. Tap View more, then Ringtone.
  3. In the sound picker, tap the + or Add icon if your model provides it.
  4. Browse to the downloaded audio file and select it. Depending on the interface, you may see a Tracks list or a Folders view.
  5. Confirm the selection, return to the contact, and tap Save.

Some Galaxy versions offer an option to play only a highlighted portion of a song or to select a file without applying extra effects; the controls are not universal. If your picker does not offer a contact-level add button, use a supported built-in sound or follow your model’s manual for importing audio.

  • BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.

Keep the original file until you have tested the ringtone. If you move it later, change its extension, or remove it from the phone, the contact assignment may no longer point to a playable file. Selecting the file again from its new location is the safest response when a custom tone stops working.

Set a local file as the phone-wide ringtone

When you want the same custom sound for most callers, use the system setting instead:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds and vibration (older software may label this Sounds and notifications).
  3. Tap Ringtone. On a dual-SIM phone, you may be asked to choose SIM 1 or SIM 2.
  4. Tap the + or Add icon.
  5. Select the file from the device and tap Done.

This changes the general incoming-call sound; it does not replace a ringtone already assigned to an individual contact. It is useful as a fallback for callers who do not have a personal assignment.

Audio files: storage, formats, and picker behavior

The file has to be downloaded to internal storage or an accessible memory location on the phone. A streaming-service listing, cloud-only item, or protected track that the picker cannot read will not appear as a selectable ringtone. If you transferred the file from a computer, verify that the transfer completed and that the file opens in a local audio player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you see What it means What to do
The file appears under Tracks The picker recognizes it as an audio file. Select it, confirm, and save the contact or ringtone setting.
The file is absent from Tracks The picker may be filtering by its music index. Open Folders and browse to the actual download location.
The file is visible in storage but cannot be selected Its format, permissions, or protection may be unsupported. Use a compatible unprotected file or convert it to a supported format, then retry.
The only copy is in a streaming app It is not a normal local file. Use a legally downloaded audio file stored on the device.

Samsung UK’s guidance, updated June 5, 2026, lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats and says an M4A file needs conversion to one of those formats. That is UK support guidance rather than a universal promise: codec support can differ by Galaxy model, One UI release, and region. If conversion is necessary, preserve a copy of the original and use a reputable converter; do not rename an extension and assume the underlying format changed.

When the picker offers both Tracks and Folders, use Folders whenever a download is missing from the indexed list. A file can be present in a Downloads folder without appearing in the music index. After moving or converting a file, close and reopen the picker to give the phone’s media index a chance to refresh.

Built-in tone or custom file?

Choice Setup effort Personalization Compatibility considerations
Built-in Samsung tone Choose it in the contact editor and save. Limited to sounds supplied by the phone. No file download or format handling; normally the most reliable route.
Local audio file Download or transfer the file, locate it in the picker, and save. Use a voice recording, music clip, or other audio you have rights to use. Must be physically stored on the phone and readable in a supported format; exact support varies by device and region.

Neither route requires buying a ringtone or installing a separate ringtone app. The practical trade-off is convenience versus personalization: built-in sounds work immediately, while a local file gives you a distinctive cue but introduces storage and compatibility checks. If reliability matters more than novelty, start with a supplied tone and move to a local file only after confirming that your model accepts it.

Contacts stored on a SIM card

Samsung Philippines says individual-contact ringtones do not work for contacts saved in SIM memory. Move or copy the person to a supported phone or account location, then assign the ringtone again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Contacts and use the menu for contact management or import/export.
  2. Choose the option to move or copy contacts from the SIM to the phone or a supported account.
  3. Open the newly stored contact record, edit it, and look for View more > Ringtone.
  4. Choose the sound and tap Save.

The exact transfer labels differ by Galaxy software. If the contact appears twice after copying, edit the copy in the phone or account location and keep your preferred record as the one you call. Do not assume that editing the SIM copy will carry the ringtone setting over; assign it again after the move.

Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective ringtone

The Ringtone field is missing

  • Confirm you tapped Edit, then expanded View more.
  • Check whether the contact is stored on the SIM; move it to the phone or a supported account.
  • Look up the model-specific contact manual because Samsung changes fields between software versions.
  • If the contact is linked or duplicated, open the record that is actually used by the Phone app and edit that one.
  • Record your model, One UI version, and region before seeking device-specific help; those details determine which labels Samsung displays.

Your downloaded file is not listed

  • Open Folders rather than relying on the Tracks index.
  • Verify that the download finished and that the file is stored locally, not only in a cloud or streaming application.
  • Check the extension and codec. Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC; M4A may require conversion on supported UK devices.
  • After moving or converting a file, close and reopen the picker so the media index can refresh.
  • If the file remains unusable, test a short MP3 stored in the phone’s internal storage. This separates a picker or contact problem from a format problem.

The phone still rings with the default sound

  • Reopen the contact and verify that the chosen tone is shown, then tap Save again.
  • Place a test call from that contact while the phone is not in silent or vibrate mode.
  • Check whether you edited a duplicate contact or a different account’s copy.
  • On dual-SIM devices, verify which SIM receives the call and whether the selected ringtone was assigned to that SIM’s general setting; SIM-specific menus can differ from contact-level settings.
  • Confirm that the caller is using the same number saved in the edited record. A second number under another contact entry may resolve to a different record.

You hear a message alert instead

Call ringtones and message notification sounds are separate settings. A contact’s incoming-call ringtone does not automatically change the sound for SMS, chat, or other notifications. Configure those alerts in the relevant messaging app or notification settings.

The sound works for one call but not another

Check whether the second call came through another number, account entry, or SIM line. The contact-level assignment is tied to the saved contact record, while dual-SIM phones can also expose line-specific general ringtone controls. Recheck the exact record and test again after saving.

How Samsung’s regional instructions should be interpreted

Samsung’s Australian contact guide documents the edit-and-save sequence for Australian-variant devices and was updated March 6, 2025. Samsung’s Philippines support material explains both the requirement for a physically downloaded song and the limitation on SIM-memory contacts. Samsung UK provides the currently published format list, updated June 5, 2026, and notes that dual-SIM phones may show SIM 1 and SIM 2 choices. These regional pages corroborate the workflow but do not make every label universal.

Before troubleshooting aggressively, identify your Galaxy model, One UI version, country or carrier variant, SIM configuration, and contact-storage location. A menu that is absent on one device may simply be placed under a different control on another. Regional support pages are useful for locating the equivalent setting, but follow the wording shown on your phone.

A quick verification checklist

  • The contact is stored on the phone or a supported account, not only on the SIM.
  • You opened the individual contact’s Edit screen.
  • You expanded View more when necessary.
  • You selected a tone under Ringtone, not a message-notification setting.
  • Any custom file is downloaded locally and uses a format your device accepts.
  • You returned to the contact and tapped Save.
  • You tested with an actual call while sound mode and volume permit ringing.
  • On a dual-SIM phone, you know which line receives the test call.

Frequently asked questions

Can I assign a different ringtone to every contact?

You can repeat the contact-edit process for as many contacts as your phone’s software supports. Each assignment is saved on that contact record, while unassigned callers use the ordinary ringtone.

Can I use a Spotify song as a contact ringtone?

Not directly. Samsung requires a physical audio file downloaded to the device. A track available only inside a streaming catalog is not selectable in the ringtone picker.

Why does Samsung show SIM 1 and SIM 2?

Dual-SIM Galaxy phones may expose separate general ringtone controls for each line. The exact screen depends on the model and regional software; choose the line that receives the calls you want to distinguish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to purchase a ringtone?

No. Built-in Samsung tones are available without a purchase, and a local file can be used if it is stored in a supported format and you have the right to use it.

Will changing the phone-wide ringtone erase my contact-specific choices?

Changing the general ringtone establishes the fallback sound for callers without an individual assignment. A contact-specific tone should continue to apply until you edit or remove that assignment, although menu behavior can vary by software version.

What should I do if my M4A file is rejected?

Samsung UK says M4A files need conversion to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC on the devices covered by that guidance. Convert the file rather than merely renaming its extension, then save the converted copy locally and select it from Folders if it does not appear under Tracks.

Can I assign a ringtone to a SIM-only contact?

Samsung Philippines says individual ringtones do not work for contacts stored in SIM memory. Copy or move the contact to the phone or a supported account, open that new record, and assign the ringtone again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find the Add or plus button?

The contact-level file picker is not identical on every Galaxy model or software version. If + or Add is absent, choose a built-in tone or check the manual for your exact device. The phone-wide path under Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone may still offer an add control.
