Google’s Private Space, available on Android 15 or later, is a separate Android profile where apps are installed, organized and optionally hidden. Both add a privacy boundary, but neither is simply a universal per-app lock, and “Android app lock” may refer to a manufacturer-specific tool with different behavior.
Secure Folder and Private Space are different kinds of protection
The most important distinction is the unit being protected. Secure Folder is a Samsung-managed container on supported Galaxy phones and tablets. You place apps and files inside it, then unlock the folder to use them. Private Space is an Android profile. Apps installed there belong to that profile rather than to the copy of the app in your main space.

That difference affects setup, accounts, notifications, migration and what remains visible when the space is locked. A feature called “App lock” on another Android phone may instead put an authentication prompt in front of individual apps without creating a separate profile or file area. You must check the exact implementation on that manufacturer’s device.

What Samsung Secure Folder does
On a supported Galaxy device, Secure Folder creates a private area protected by a PIN, password, pattern or, where supported, fingerprint. Samsung describes it as a place for selected files, apps and personal information rather than merely a prompt that appears whenever one ordinary app opens.

Apps can have an independent installation
Adding an app to Secure Folder can give you a separate working environment. If the app supports multiple accounts, the copy inside Secure Folder can use a different account from the copy outside it. This is useful for separating work and personal logins or keeping a second messaging identity apart from the main phone profile. Whether an app permits this is controlled by the app developer, so Secure Folder does not guarantee that every service can run two accounts.
Files and settings are part of the boundary
You can place selected files in the protected area and manage Secure Folder’s lock type, notifications, applications, accounts and related settings. Because the folder is a Samsung feature, the available controls and wording depend on the Galaxy model, carrier configuration and One UI version.
Support is not universal
If Secure Folder is missing from Settings, Samsung says the device may not support it. Do not infer that every Galaxy-branded phone or tablet has the feature. Samsung’s regional support material also warns that setup paths vary by Android release. Check the model’s current support documentation and search Settings for “Secure Folder” before planning around it.
What Android Private Space does
Google’s official guide states: “Private space is available on Android 15 or later.” It is designed as a separate space for hiding and organizing apps. You can choose a distinct lock and, while the space is locked, hide it so it does not appear at the bottom of the app list.
It is a separate Android profile
An app installed in Private Space is installed in that profile. The main-space copy and the Private Space copy are separate installations, with separate app data. Google Help specifically says that app data cannot be moved from the main-space app into its Private Space counterpart. In practice, you should expect to install the app again and sign in again rather than transfer the existing session automatically.
Use a separate account when separation matters
Google recommends considering a dedicated Google Account for Private Space if you want stronger separation. A separate account can reduce the amount of account activity, synchronization and app discovery shared with your main profile, although it does not make the space invisible to every form of device administration or technical inspection.

Hiding is a convenience, not an invisibility guarantee
When locked and hidden, Private Space can disappear from the launcher’s app list, recent-apps view and parts of Settings. Google nevertheless notes that computer access, including ADB commands and device logs, can reveal its existence, and apps may also uncover information about it. Treat hiding as protection against casual browsing, not as a promise against a determined examination.
“Android app lock” is not one universal feature
Android does not provide one identically named, identically behaving App lock across all manufacturers. A phone maker may offer a per-app authentication prompt, a protected folder, a second profile or a combination of those ideas. The name, supported apps, notification behavior, lock timeout and recovery process can all differ.
For a meaningful comparison, use Google’s documented Private Space as the Android-wide reference and then inspect the actual app-lock feature on the phone you own. Do not assume that instructions for a Galaxy device apply to another manufacturer, or that a third-party-looking “App lock” menu creates a separate profile.
How to set up Secure Folder on a Galaxy device
The exact labels change across Android and One UI versions, but the current Samsung guidance places the control under the security settings.
- Open Settings.
- Look under Security and privacy or More security settings, then select Secure Folder.
- Follow the on-screen setup and choose a lock method such as a PIN, password, pattern or supported fingerprint option.
- Open Secure Folder and use its controls to add apps or move selected files into it.
- Review notifications, account management and automatic-lock settings so the behavior matches your privacy needs.
If the Secure Folder entry does not appear, Samsung says the model may not support the feature. Search Settings for the feature name and check Samsung’s support page for the exact device and software release rather than installing an unrelated substitute and assuming it behaves the same way.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Select Private space.
- Follow the setup prompts and choose whether to use a separate lock.
- Install apps from within Private Space; do not expect the data from the main-space copy to follow automatically.
- Enable the option to hide Private Space when it is locked if you do not want it shown at the bottom of the app list.
If the menu is absent, verify the Android version and the device maker’s support notes. “Android 15 or later” is Google’s documented requirement, not a guarantee that every Android 15 phone exposes every Private Space control.
How locking, hiding and notifications differ
Secure Folder visibility
Samsung provides controls to hide Secure Folder from the Apps screen and quick panel. Hiding the entry does not remove the protected data; it changes how easily someone can find the folder. Notification controls are managed separately, so review them if message previews or app names could reveal that the folder is in use.
Private Space visibility
Private Space can be hidden while locked. Google describes locked behavior that removes its apps from the launcher, recent apps and Settings surfaces where the space would normally be listed. The space becomes available again after authentication. The computer-access and device-log caveat still applies even when the user interface does not show it.

Automatic relocking is version-sensitive
Samsung’s current guidance for Android 16 with One UI 8 says the Each time I leave an app automatic-lock choice has been removed. The default is When screen turns off, and a Lock and exit action is available. Older One UI releases can present different choices, so follow the labels shown on your phone instead of relying on an older screenshot or tutorial.
Encryption and the cost of making Secure Folder unavailable
Samsung documents an Encrypt option for Secure Folder. While Secure Folder is encrypted, “All apps and their notifications will stop working.” Decrypting the folder allows those apps to run and send notifications again. This is stronger than simply hiding an icon, but it also means you can miss time-sensitive messages while the folder remains encrypted. Decide whether the interruption is acceptable before using encryption as a routine setting.
Accounts, migration and backups
Do not expect automatic migration
Private Space does not import the main-space app’s data. Plan for a fresh installation, a new sign-in and any app-specific setup. Secure Folder can host an additional app instance and may allow a different account, but the app itself determines whether two accounts, exports or transfers are supported.

Understand Secure Folder’s backup limitation
Samsung says Secure Folder no longer supports creating new backups. Its settings can still list restoration from a previous backup. That does not mean every historical backup is recoverable, nor does it mean new backups are being created. Before resetting, replacing or repairing a phone, use each app’s own export or cloud-sync process where available and verify that important files can be opened outside the folder if you need an independent copy.
Profile separation is not the same as a backup plan
Google’s Private Space documentation explains profile separation but does not establish a universal migration or backup workflow for every phone. Treat the space as an additional profile that needs its own account and app-level recovery planning.

Choose Secure Folder when you use a supported Galaxy device and need files plus apps together
Secure Folder is the more natural fit when your goal is a Samsung-managed container for documents, photos, app instances and personal information. It also makes sense when you need an app to operate with a separate account and your Galaxy model supports the feature.
Choose Private Space when your phone supports Android 15 or later and profile separation is the priority
Private Space is suited to hiding and organizing apps in a distinct Android profile. It is useful when you are comfortable reinstalling apps, signing in again and keeping the profile’s account activity separate. It is not a shortcut for moving existing app data.
Investigate the manufacturer’s App lock when you only need an authentication prompt
If you simply want an extra prompt before opening one or two ordinary apps, a manufacturer’s per-app lock may be less disruptive than creating a second space. Confirm whether it protects files, duplicates app installations, hides notifications, supports biometric unlock and offers a recovery path. Those details are not standardized across Android phones.
Privacy limits to keep in mind
- A hidden icon is not proof that the feature is undiscoverable. Private Space can be exposed through computer access such as ADB commands, device logs or apps, according to Google.
- Separate spaces do not automatically create separate accounts. Use different accounts only where the app and service support them.
- Lock behavior depends on software version. Confirm the automatic-lock setting and test it after screen-off, reboot and a normal app switch.
- Notifications can disclose activity unless you adjust notification settings or use Secure Folder’s encryption behavior knowingly.
- Neither feature replaces a backup strategy. Secure Folder’s current limitation on creating backups is especially important before a reset or device change.
Troubleshooting checklist
The feature is missing
- Check the Android version and install available system updates.
- Search Settings for “Secure Folder” or “Private space” rather than relying on a remembered menu path.
- Confirm that the specific model and carrier software support the feature.
- Consult the manufacturer’s current support page for that exact model.
An app is not showing the expected data
Verify which space you opened. Private Space has separate app data, and Secure Folder’s app copy can also have an independent account. Open the app from the intended space and sign in with the account associated with that installation.
Best Value
Notifications stopped
Check whether Secure Folder is encrypted, whether its notification controls are disabled and whether the folder is locked. Samsung states that decrypting Secure Folder restores app operation and notifications. For Private Space, unlock the profile and review the app’s notification permissions inside that profile.
You cannot find an older Secure Folder backup
Samsung’s current guidance distinguishes restoration from a previous backup from the ability to create new backups. Check the restoration option shown on the device and use app-level exports or synced copies where available; do not assume a new Secure Folder backup exists.
Bottom line for the comparison
Secure Folder is a Samsung-specific protected container for apps, files and data. Private Space is Google’s Android 15-or-later separate profile for installing, organizing and hiding apps. A generic Android App lock may be something else entirely. Match the feature to your device and objective: protected content and independent app instances point toward Secure Folder, profile-based app separation points toward Private Space, and a simple authentication prompt may point toward the phone maker’s own App lock. Check the current menus and limitations on your exact model before moving sensitive data.
