If photos on your Samsung Galaxy S22 seem to move, the feature is probably Motion Photo—Samsung’s counterpart to Apple’s Live Photos. It captures a short clip of action before you press the shutter, and lets you review the motion or choose a still frame. The names and workflows are different, so an S22 does not take Apple Live Photos.
What Samsung Motion Photo does
Samsung describes Motion Photo as capturing “a few seconds of action leading up to” the shutter release. You can review the motion and select the still moment you want to keep; Samsung also says the motion can be shared as a video. Those are Samsung’s descriptions of its feature, not specifications for Apple Live Photos. Samsung’s Motion Photo instructions are for Australian Galaxy devices and were last updated Dec. 31, 2025.

Apple calls its feature Live Photos. Apple says a Live Photo captures 1.5 seconds before and 1.5 seconds after the shot. That timing applies to Apple’s feature; it should not be assumed for Motion Photo. Apple’s Live Photos guide describes the iPhone feature.

How to check whether Motion Photo is on
- Open the Camera app and use a supported Photo mode. Look for the Motion Photo control; its position can vary with the camera layout and software version.
- Take a test picture, then open it in Gallery. Check whether it plays or offers a Motion Photo review or edit action.
- If the photo is still, check the Camera mode and software version, and confirm that the feature is supported on your regional device. Samsung’s available instructions do not establish one control location for every S22 model or software build.
Samsung’s support page gives the general Camera toggle and review flow, but not an S22-specific screenshot or a guarantee that the control appears in the same toolbar position on every build. If you cannot find it, consult Samsung’s instructions for your region or contact your local Samsung subsidiary.

Why an S22 might save a still instead
Motion Photo does not necessarily mean every picture will include movement. A Samsung software-update notice for the Galaxy S22+ model SM-S926B describes an Auto setting: it records a Motion Photo when movement is detected and otherwise saves a still to save space. This notice is specific to that model; it does not establish that the same Auto option is available on every S22 variant. Read the SM-S926B update notice.
How to choose a different still frame
Samsung says Motion Photo can be reviewed or edited so you can select the still moment to preserve. The exact controls may differ by device and software version. Google Photos also documents a way to choose a frame from a motion photo: open the photo, use “Shots in this photo,” select a shot, and save it as a copy. The available flow can depend on your device, app version, and backup path; Google’s instructions are not specific to the S22. Google Photos’ Android editing help.

How to share a Motion Photo
When the recipient’s device or app may not support motion-photo playback, share the clip as a video. Samsung explicitly describes video sharing for Motion Photo. Apple likewise documents a “Save as Video” option for Live Photos. A video is a practical way to share the movement, but the cited instructions do not establish that the original animated-photo format is preserved on every transfer—or that a Samsung Motion Photo becomes an Apple Live Photo.
