Samsung research shows what matters most to smartphone users in Europe

Samsung’s latest European survey points to a two-part smartphone brief: people want devices that reduce everyday friction while helping them pursue interests and ambitions. In the U.K. release, 36% of respondents said charging too often was a major frustration, while speed and performance were the leading stated priority for a future phone after basic requirements, at 22%.

The results come from 5,001 adults in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. They are self-reported findings published by Samsung, not an independent test of phone performance or a forecast of actual purchases.

What Samsung’s survey measured

Censuswide surveyed 5,001 people aged 18 and over between September 25 and September 30, 2026, across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. Samsung says Censuswide is a member of the Market Research Society and British Polling Council, follows the MRS Code of Conduct and ESOMAR principles, and has signed the Global Data Quality Pledge. The release does not provide a margin of error or the full questionnaire, so the percentages should be read as reported responses from this five-country sample rather than as a definitive picture of every European consumer.

People choose phones for both present needs and future goals

Samsung reports that 66% of respondents chose their current smartphone with at least one interest they wanted to pursue in mind. The combined result covers interests listed in the release, including entertainment, side hustles or personal projects, gaming, travel and content creation.

Ambition also influences technology decisions. Forty-six percent said their ambitions affect the choices they make, while 24% said their choices are primarily shaped by the life they aspire to lead. Personal expression is another factor: 28% said they chose their current smartphone partly to reflect their personal style.

These figures describe intentions and self-perception. They do not establish that a particular phone enabled an interest, improved a person’s life or caused a later purchase.

Everyday frustrations are practical, not just aspirational

Reported issue Share of respondents
Charging the phone too often 36%
Switching between apps to complete a task 18%
Not always having enough screen space 14%
Needing a larger-screen device to finish something started on a phone 13%
Avoiding or stopping public banking because someone nearby might see the screen 27%

Charging frequency was the most commonly reported major frustration in the U.K. release, at 36%. Eighteen percent objected to moving between apps instead of keeping what they need open together. Screen limitations appeared in two related responses: 14% said they do not always have enough screen space, and 13% said they need to switch to a larger-screen device to finish a task begun on their phone.

Privacy affects behaviour as well as comfort. Samsung says 27% had stopped or avoided online or mobile banking in public because another person might see their screen. That is a report of avoidance; it does not prove that screen visibility caused a specific financial loss or security incident.

What respondents want from a future phone

After basic requirements, speed and performance led the future-purchase priorities listed by Samsung, at 22%. Other responses point to a desire for capability without the bulk of a larger device.

Future preference Share
Speed or performance 22%
Doing more without moving to a larger-screen device 20%
A thinner, more portable design 15%
Openness to a different phone type for a feature suited to a regular activity 23%
Openness to a different phone type for greater privacy around other people 18%

The results do not identify a single winning form factor. They instead suggest several decision axes: performance, multitasking, battery and charging convenience, portability, usable screen area and privacy in shared spaces. A phone that scores well on one axis may involve compromises on another, and the survey did not test those trade-offs in specific models.

Younger adults show interest in changing phone formats

Among respondents aged 25–34, 21% said they would consider a regular-sized phone that unfolds into a small tablet. A separate 23% said a lighter or thinner smartphone suited to their lifestyle could make them reconsider their usual choice.

These are stated openness figures, not purchase forecasts. They indicate that some respondents may consider a different design when it solves a recurring problem, such as needing more working space without carrying a larger device or wanting a lighter phone for daily use.

A discrepancy between Samsung’s regional releases

Samsung’s Belgian Newsroom version of the same dated research reports 69%—rather than the U.K. page’s 66%—for respondents choosing a current phone with at least one interest they wanted to develop. Both pages refer to 5,001 people and September 25–30 fieldwork, but Samsung does not explain the difference.

This article uses the 66% figure from the English-language U.K. release and does not combine it with the Belgian result. Readers comparing Samsung’s localized pages should treat the discrepancy as unresolved rather than as evidence of a change between countries.

What the findings do—and do not—show

  • They show a mix of practical frustrations and aspirational reasons for choosing a phone.
  • They identify charging frequency as the most frequently listed major frustration in this release.
  • They place speed and performance first among the stated future priorities after basics.
  • They show interest in screen flexibility, portability and privacy, but do not prove that one phone category performs better.
  • They cover adults in five named countries and should not be generalized automatically to all European consumers.

Samsung Europe Chief Marketing Officer Benjamin Braun framed the findings this way: “People rely on their smartphones to help them stay connected, productive, entertained and organised throughout the day. But even small frustrations can disrupt those experiences and make everyday tasks more difficult than they need to be.” He added that the right smartphone should remove those frictions and that “choice matters.” This is Samsung’s interpretation of its survey, not an independent conclusion.

How to use the results when choosing a phone

For an individual buyer, the most useful takeaway is to rank the friction that actually interrupts daily use. Check whether charging, app switching, limited screen space, public visibility or device weight is the recurring problem. Then compare phones on the relevant capability rather than assuming a newer or different form factor will solve every issue.

Optional accessories can address specific situations: a compatible privacy screen protector may reduce side-angle visibility, while a USB-C power bank may help when charging opportunities are limited. Neither product was tested or recommended by this survey, and compatibility should be verified for the individual phone.

Samsung’s earlier July 21, 2026 release about screen space used a separate survey and sample; its percentages should not be merged with the October findings.
