Reports dated October 16, 2026, say Samsung’s Mobile Experience division saw excessive heat and performance loss from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 during sustained-load validation for the unreleased Galaxy S27 Ultra. Samsung reportedly gave Qualcomm until mid-October to address the problem and could switch to its own Exynos 2700, but neither company has confirmed the claims.
What Samsung is reportedly testing
Seoul Economic Daily and SamMobile report that Samsung encountered thermal-limit violations and declining processing speed while validating the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The alleged weakness appears under prolonged, heavy workloads rather than during short peak-performance bursts. In practical terms, a phone could post a strong initial benchmark result but reduce clock speeds after extended gaming, video processing, or on-device AI activity.

Seoul Economic Daily says Samsung asked Qualcomm for fixes by a mid-October deadline. If the platform still fails Samsung’s thermal and sustained-performance requirements, the company may use its Exynos 2700 instead. These details come from industry sources; no Samsung test report, Qualcomm document, or final Galaxy S27 Ultra specification has been published in the cited coverage.
Confirmed facts versus reported claims
| Item | What is established | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 | Qualcomm announced it on September 22, 2026 as a premium mobile platform for AI, gaming, camera, and connectivity workloads. | Official product announcement. |
| Reference-phone graphics result | Android Authority reported a 19% improvement over Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme rasterization. | Measured on a Qualcomm reference device, not a retail Galaxy S27 Ultra. |
| Samsung thermal findings | Industry-source reports allege excessive heat and performance degradation during sustained testing. | No published temperature, throttling percentage, ambient condition, or test log. |
| Mid-October deadline | Samsung reportedly requested Qualcomm fixes by mid-October. | Reported by Seoul Economic Daily; not confirmed by either company. |
| Exynos 2700 option | The Exynos 2700 is described as a possible fallback for Galaxy S27 Ultra qualification. | There is no confirmed product announcement or head-to-head test. |
Why sustained heat matters more than a peak benchmark
Modern phone processors can briefly run at very high frequencies before heat, power limits, or skin-temperature targets force lower clocks. A sustained-load problem therefore affects the experience over time: frame rates may fall in long gaming sessions, export or encoding jobs may take longer, and repeated AI tasks may lose throughput. It can also increase fanless chassis temperatures and battery drain.

The available reporting does not show that the chip is unsafe, defective in every phone, or unable to reach its advertised peak speed. It indicates an alleged mismatch between the chip’s behavior in Samsung’s intended chassis and the company’s requirements for extended workloads. Cooling hardware, firmware, power limits, software scheduling, and the final phone design can all change the result.
What Qualcomm has publicly disclosed
Qualcomm’s September 22 announcement presented the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 as its next-generation premium smartphone platforms. The release emphasized agentic AI, gaming, cameras, and connectivity, and listed HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi as launch partners. Samsung was not named in that announcement.

That omission does not prove Samsung has abandoned the platform. OEM launch schedules and regional configurations can be announced separately. It does mean Qualcomm’s public release does not confirm a Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S27 Ultra.

Could the Galaxy S27 Ultra use Exynos 2700?
Exynos 2700 is currently a reported contingency, not a confirmed specification. Samsung could continue with Qualcomm if revised silicon, firmware, or a redesigned cooling solution meets validation targets. It could also use different processors by region, as Samsung has done with some earlier Galaxy generations, although no regional plan for the S27 Ultra has been announced.

A meaningful Snapdragon-versus-Exynos decision would require controlled retail-device testing. The relevant measurements include:
- sustained CPU and GPU performance after 10 minutes or more of load;
- peak performance and the rate of clock-speed reduction;
- surface and internal temperatures under the same ambient conditions;
- power efficiency and battery endurance;
- modem behavior and connectivity power consumption;
- AI throughput on representative workloads;
- graphics performance and frame-time consistency;
- regional availability and software optimization.
None of those comparative figures is available for the Exynos 2700 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 in a finished Galaxy phone.

What to watch next
The decisive evidence will be an official Galaxy S27 Ultra announcement, a confirmed processor configuration by market, and independent tests of sustained performance on retail hardware. Readers should treat claims about exact temperatures, throttling rates, battery life, or Exynos superiority as unverified unless the companies or a controlled test publishes those measurements.
For now, the most accurate conclusion is narrow: Samsung is reportedly dissatisfied with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6’s sustained thermal behavior in internal Galaxy S27 Ultra testing, Qualcomm has reportedly been given a remediation window, and an Exynos 2700 switch remains possible but unconfirmed.
