Samsung has not confirmed a production cut. The claim comes from a MoneyToday report published October 8, 2026, which cites unnamed IT industry sources. According to that report, Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division recently asked suppliers to reduce product volumes by 20% to 30%, and Samsung’s smartphone production could fall by as much as 30% in the fourth quarter of 2026. The line that Samsung phones “yield no profit at all when sold” is an anonymous source’s characterization. Samsung does not publish phone-by-phone margins, and its official figures cover MX combined with its Networks business.
What the report claims
MoneyToday’s English article, written by Hoonnam Kim, is marked as AI-translated and says it may differ slightly from the original Korean. Its central claims, all attributed to industry sources rather than to Samsung, are these:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Supplier requests: MX reportedly asked partners to reduce product supply volumes by 20% to 30%.
- Q4 production: Samsung smartphone production could decline by up to 30% in the fourth quarter compared with the third quarter.
- Profitability: an anonymous IT industry source says Samsung phones currently yield no profit when sold, attributed to rising memory and semiconductor prices.
- Demand timing: the usual Q4 slowdown is compounded by buyers who may wait for models announced in January and February, with some demand shifting into Q1.
The headline’s “by millions” refers to the scale implied by these production projections, not to a confirmed unit count.

| Figure | Value | Who reported it | What it measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supplier volume requests | 20% to 30% lower | MoneyToday, citing industry sources | Orders Samsung MX reportedly placed with partners; not actual output |
| Possible Q4 smartphone production decline | Up to 30% | MoneyToday, citing industry sources | A forecast; not Samsung-confirmed guidance |
| IDC projected Q3 production | 59 million units | IDC, as cited by MoneyToday | Projected production |
| IDC projected Q4 production | 52 million units | IDC, as cited by MoneyToday | Projected production, about 12% below Q3 |
| IDC smartphone shipments | 62.4 million (Q1), 62.7 million (Q2) | IDC, as cited by MoneyToday | Shipments in each quarter, as reported |
| Annual production expectation | Up to 270 million; described as an “early-200-million-unit” total after the reduction | MoneyToday | The outlet’s expectation; not company guidance |
The gap between the two cut estimates is the key point. IDC’s projection implies a decline of roughly 12% from Q3 to Q4 (59 million down to 52 million, about 7 million units). Simple arithmetic on the report’s own figures shows what the up-to-30% scenario would mean: applied to IDC’s 59 million Q3 projection, it would leave about 41 million units, roughly 17.7 million fewer. The two estimates are not interchangeable, and the report does not say which one Samsung’s supplier requests correspond to.
Why “no profit” is not a phone-level finding
Samsung’s most recent official figures are in its Q2 2026 earnings release dated July 30, 2026. They show:

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and consolidated operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion.
- MX and Networks combined: KRW 33.2 trillion in revenue and an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion.
- Revenue growth year over year, which Samsung attributes to solid Galaxy S26 sales and strong Galaxy A series momentum.
- An earnings decline that Samsung attributes to elevated component cost pressures across the industry.
The operating loss belongs to a combined segment that includes Networks, so it cannot be read as a smartphone margin. A secondary SamMobile article attributes about KRW 700 billion of the broader DX (Device eXperience) loss to MX. That split does not appear in Samsung’s earnings release, so treat it as a secondary estimate rather than a disclosed figure.

Memory costs behind the claim
The report’s cost argument rests on memory pricing. MoneyToday attributes the following figures to TrendForce, but the reader reaches them through MoneyToday’s account:
- Q2 2026 LPDDR5X price for 12GB: $145 to $146, reported as 175% higher year over year.
- Q3 2026 forecast: a further increase of roughly 20% quarter over quarter, up to $180.
Memory is one of the larger component costs in a flagship-class phone, which is why Samsung’s own release cites component cost pressure. The reported memory numbers are a TrendForce projection as relayed by MoneyToday; they are not a Samsung figure.

Seasonality is a separate factor
Q4 is normally a slower quarter for smartphones, and the report says that pattern is part of the forecast. Buyers who expect the January and February model announcements may hold off, and some demand moves into Q1. Seasonality can explain part of a Q4 production reduction even without any profit problem, which is one reason the report’s production forecast cannot be read as proof of a margin crisis.
What is confirmed, reported, and not established
- Confirmed by Samsung: the Q2 2026 consolidated and MX and Networks figures; solid Galaxy S26 and Galaxy A series sales; the component cost pressure cited as the reason for lower earnings.
- Reported, not confirmed: MX’s supplier volume requests of 20% to 30%; a possible Q4 smartphone production decline of up to 30%; the “no profit” characterization; the early-200-million annual total.
- Not established: smartphone-only margins; whether Samsung has changed its Q4 production plan; any Q3 segment result, since Samsung had not yet released Q3 figures as of October 8, 2026.
The sources available for this article do not tie the reported cut to a specific Galaxy model. MoneyToday mentions the Galaxy Z Fold8 in its coverage, but it does not say the reduction would fall on that device.

What to watch
- Q3 2026 earnings: Samsung has scheduled its Q3 earnings call for October 29, 2026. Its MX and Networks segment figures there are the first official check on the margin claim, although they will still be combined with Networks.
- Samsung’s commentary: any language on component costs, Q4 outlook, or production planning in that release or call.
- Updated IDC and TrendForce figures: revised production or memory-price projections would show whether the 12% and up-to-30% scenarios are converging.
- Supplier-side reporting: confirmation or correction of the volume requests from partners would be the most direct evidence of the scale of any cut.
Until Samsung addresses the report, the accurate summary is narrower than the headline: a Korean outlet reports that Samsung may cut Q4 phone output by up to 30%, citing rising memory costs and anonymous industry sources, while Samsung’s latest official figures show a combined MX and Networks operating loss for Q2 2026.
