What customers reported
SBS reported that some customers received SmartThings notifications and proceeded with an update. Some then saw an update-in-progress message while their refrigerators stopped functioning. The report described household concerns about food loss in the days before Chuseok. A Samsung Members forum user expressed that worry bluntly: “음식 다 썩고 난 후 와서 봐주겠다?”—roughly, “Are you saying you’ll come look after all the food has spoiled?” That was a customer’s complaint, not Samsung’s statement. Ars Technica cited SBS for hundreds of customer cases. That is a report of cases, not a confirmed count of failed refrigerators: Samsung did not provide a unit total in its response to Ars, and the official notice reviewed gives no total either. The reviewed official response also does not name affected models.

SBS reported that Samsung would cover repair costs and was reviewing compensation for spoiled food. Tom’s Hardware likewise reported that compensation was still under review and that Samsung had announced a September 24 target to restore affected refrigerators, with emergency on-site visits for urgent refrigerator or freezer problems. Which refrigerator models were affected?
Samsung has not named the affected models in the incident notice and response reviewed, so owners should not assume that every smart refrigerator—or every Bespoke AI Family Hub model—was involved. A separate September 7 Samsung announcement named selected Family Hub refrigerators due for software updates, including 21.5-inch and 32-inch Family Hub models released from 2021 through 2025 and selected 9-inch Family Hub models from 2025. - Contact Samsung Service through its current Korea service channel. Samsung’s notice directed customers to service centers; verify current contact details and appointment options on Samsung’s official service page.
- Describe the symptoms precisely. Note whether the refrigerator is losing power, the screen is abnormal, or an update-in-progress message remains visible, and when the problem began. These details can help service staff assess urgency.
- Ask about repair-cost coverage and food-loss compensation separately. Contemporaneous reports said repairs would be covered while spoiled-food compensation was still under review. Request the current terms directly from Samsung rather than assuming a final policy was in place.
