Samsung QA65S95DAWXXY Review: Is the 65-Inch S95D Right for You?

The Australian 65-inch Samsung S95D, model QA65S95DAWXXY, is most compelling if reflections are a persistent problem in your viewing room. Samsung says its OLED anti-glare treatment reduces reflections and calls the screen “Glare Free,” but that does not mean reflections vanish in every room. There is also a reported concern that the finish can affect perceived black levels and shadow detail, so movie viewers should weigh room brightness against dark-scene performance.

What is the Samsung QA65S95DAWXXY?

QA65S95DAWXXY is Samsung’s Australian model code for the 65-inch S95D OLED 4K Smart TV. Samsung announced the S95D range in Australia in 55-, 65- and 77-inch sizes in March 2024. The regional model identity and support materials are listed on Samsung Australia’s support page.

This review assesses the model using Samsung’s Australian specifications and launch information, alongside a reported picture-quality trade-off. It is not based on new controlled testing, and it does not establish a current Australian price or stock position.

Is the S95D good in a bright room?

Its main differentiator is the OLED anti-glare screen treatment. Samsung says the treatment reduces reflections and reports that UL verified its “Glare Free” claim using UGR testing. That is a manufacturer-reported verification, not a promise that lamps, windows or bright objects will be invisible from every seat or under every lighting condition. Samsung’s launch description is available in its 2024 Australian TV and AV announcement.

Samsung 65-Inch Class OLED 4K S95D Series HDR Pro Smart TV w/Dolby Atmos, Object Tracking Sound+, Motion Xcelerator, Real Depth Enhancer, 4K AI Upscaling, Alexa Built-in (QN65S95D, 2024 Model)
  • OLED TECHNOLOGY: Discover pure blacks, bright whites and Pantone-validated color; Combined with detail and brightness, this pixel-packed screen gives you a dramatic view for everything you watch
  • OLED GLARE FREE: Watch everything you love with nearly no glare; Anti-glare technology limits light distraction on your screen; Say goodbye to washed out images and see your TV's clarity, color and contrast shine through
  • OLED HDR PRO: Experience an infinite amount of brightness and dramatic detail across a wide range of Pantone-Validated colors; Your picture is optimized to make bright whites and pure blacks crisp and clear
  • MOTION XCELERATOR 144Hz: Play games and content with ultra-smooth motion and virtually no lag or blur; Get uninterrupted action with crisp visuals rendered at top speeds¹
  • REAL DEPTH ENHANCER: Experience depth and dimension on screen just the way you see it in real life; Real Depth Enhancer creates an immersive experience by mirroring how the human eye processes depth by increasing foreground contrast

If a window or lamp reflects directly across your current screen, the S95D’s reflection management may be especially useful. Room layout still matters: changing the TV’s position or controlling direct light can help, and the finish should not be treated as a substitute for those measures.

Does the anti-glare screen affect dark scenes?

There is a meaningful caveat for viewers who watch films in dim rooms or care strongly about shadow detail. TechRadar’s James Davidson reported that the S95D’s anti-reflection finish could compromise black levels, particularly with Filmmaker Mode in bright lighting. The 2025 article focused on the succeeding S95F and referred back to the S95D; it is evidence of a reported concern, not a fresh, comprehensive retest of every S95D unit or setup. See TechRadar’s discussion of the S95F and S95D black-level issue.

That makes the choice less about a universally “better” screen and more about your room and viewing habits. How capable is it for gaming?

Samsung’s 2024 Australian specification sheet lists four HDMI inputs, each supporting input signals up to 4K at 144Hz, as well as eARC, FreeSync Premium Pro and Gaming Hub. Samsung’s launch announcement also lists 4K 144Hz VRR. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a measurement of gaming performance; the refresh rate you can use depends on the source device, its settings and the signal path. Check the device’s output support before buying on the assumption that it can deliver 4K at 144Hz.

  • One Connect (Y24 4K) external connection box.

Samsung’s Australian retailer sheet is the source for these specifications: S95D 2024 Australian retailer specification sheet. Samsung also describes the S95D as having “over 8 million specially engineered self-illuminating pixels”; that is the company’s product description, not an independent measurement.

What should you plan for installation and sound?

Allow for the One Connect box

The One Connect box keeps the TV’s connected devices and cable routing separate from the panel. Plan where the box will sit, how its cable will reach the television, and whether it will remain accessible after the TV is mounted. The external box can make a clean installation easier, but it is another component to accommodate.

Built-in audio or a soundbar?

Samsung lists 70W of 4.2.2-channel speaker output and Q-Symphony support. Those specifications do not establish how the set will sound in a particular room, so whether you need a soundbar depends on your preferences, room and listening habits. A soundbar is an optional upgrade, not a prerequisite for using the TV.

  • Look carefully at the trade-off if: your priority is dark-room film viewing and preserving shadow detail, given the reported black-level concern.
  • Plan ahead if: you are wall-mounting the TV, need a particular cable route, or expect the built-in audio to replace a separate system.
