To test a Samsung phone’s microphone, run the Mic diagnostic in Samsung Members, then make a short recording in Voice Recorder or Camera and play it back. If recordings sound clear but calls or one app do not, check microphone permissions and Bluetooth routing before assuming the phone is damaged.
Run the Samsung Members microphone diagnostic
Samsung Members includes device diagnostics, though menu names and available tests vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region. Samsung’s U.S. guidance routes users through either Discover or Support, depending on the app entry point. Samsung Support describes the feature this way: “You can run diagnostic tests right from the app if you’d like to check your Camera, microphone, or another of your device’s functions.” Samsung’s diagnostic instructions explain how to access the tests.

- Open Samsung Members.
- Look for Diagnostics or Phone diagnostics in the app’s Discover or Support area.
- Select Mic or Microphone and follow the prompts. Allow microphone access if requested; some devices may prompt you to test a second microphone.
A pass means the tested function worked during that check. It does not establish that every microphone path, app, call, or network condition will work the same way.

Confirm the result with a recording
A second check helps determine whether the phone can capture audible speech outside the diagnostic. Before recording, disconnect wired or USB-C audio accessories, turn Bluetooth off, and remove a case or film if it might cover a microphone opening. Microphone locations differ by model. Samsung recommends recording and playing back audio as a troubleshooting step in its microphone troubleshooting guidance.

- Open Voice Recorder or the Camera app.
- Record a brief spoken clip in a quiet place.
- Play it back through the phone speaker and listen for clear, intelligible speech, unusual quietness, crackling, distortion, or missing sound.
If the clip sounds clear but a call or one app fails, the built-in microphone may be functioning while permissions, input routing, the app, or call conditions cause the symptom.

Check permissions and Bluetooth routing
If recording works but a particular app or calls do not, check whether the phone is using a Bluetooth headset or other connected audio device as the input. Turn Bluetooth off for the test and disconnect wired accessories so the phone’s own microphone is the likely input.

Check microphone access in Settings > Privacy where that menu is available, and review the affected app’s microphone permission. The exact settings labels vary across software versions. Samsung’s regional troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying Safe Mode to check for third-party app interference. Remove a case, film, or other item that could cover a microphone opening; its location depends on the model. If the phone is wet, let it air-dry. Samsung specifically cautions against compressed air when drying or cleaning a wet device in its Ireland microphone guidance.

Do not insert sharp objects or apply liquid to microphone openings. Samsung India’s advice is to power the device off before cleaning and use gentle methods with minimal pressure. Because cleaning advice and microphone placement can vary by model and region, use the instructions for your exact device from local Samsung support rather than improvising.

Contact Samsung support or arrange service through Samsung’s local service options if the Members diagnostic continues to fail, recordings remain poor after basic checks, or the problem persists across apps.
