On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > About phone to find the IMEI. If the phone is usable, you can also open the Phone app and enter *#06#; where supported, the IMEI appears without placing a call. Finding the number identifies the device—it does not unlock it.
Find the IMEI in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Find the entry labeled IMEI.
On some older software versions, the identifier may be under About phone > Status. Menu names and screens can vary by model, software, carrier and region. Samsung’s instructions for Canada apply to devices sold there and note that screens and settings may differ elsewhere: Samsung Canada: Find the IMEI, serial number and model number.

Samsung says the code works where supported by the device and carrier. Its Brazil instructions say you do not need to press the call button: Samsung Brazil: Find your phone’s IMEI.
If you cannot use the phone
Try these alternatives; availability depends on the device, records you kept and the accounts or services linked to it.

- Retail box or purchase receipt: Check for a device label or identifier printed on the packaging or receipt.
- Carrier account: Look in the account or device details if your carrier makes the IMEI available there.
- Device markings: Some models have identifying marks on the back or beneath a removable battery. Samsung warns not to try to remove a battery that is not designed to come out, because doing so can damage the phone and void its warranty. - Linked Samsung services: In some regions, Samsung Members or SmartThings Find may show device information for a phone linked to the relevant account. Samsung Brazil describes these options and notes that the IMEI may be requested when blocking a device or filing a police report: Samsung Brazil: Find your phone’s IMEI.
If the phone is lost or stolen, contact your carrier or local authorities about the appropriate next steps; reporting and blocking procedures vary by location.
Tell the IMEI apart from other numbers
The IMEI, serial number and model number identify different things. Samsung explains that the IMEI is an identifier for a phone or other communication device, while the serial number is assigned by the manufacturer to identify an individual product. A model number identifies a product version or range and can be shared by many devices. See Samsung Canada’s explanation of device identifiers.

Samsung Argentina describes the IMEI as a 15-digit code used by carriers to track or block a device reported stolen; that statement is from Samsung’s regional support guidance: Samsung Argentina: Find an IMEI number.
Which IMEI should you provide?
A compatible dual-SIM phone may display separate identifiers, often labeled IMEI and IMEI 2. Samsung Brazil documents this labeling. If a carrier, insurer or support form asks for an IMEI, check whether it specifies which one rather than assuming the first is always the right entry.

Does finding the IMEI unlock the phone?
No. The IMEI is a device identifier; displaying it does not remove a screen lock or carrier restriction. Samsung’s instructions cover locating identifiers, not determining carrier-unlock eligibility. For a carrier unlock, ask your carrier about its official process and requirements.
