The Samsung Odyssey G5 (LC34G55T) is the better gaming-first choice, while the Gigabyte G34WQC is the better all-round desk monitor. Samsung gives you a 165Hz maximum refresh rate, a tighter 1000R curve and FreeSync Premium. Gigabyte counters with a brighter 350 cd/m² specification, VESA DisplayHDR 400, four video inputs, built-in speakers and a height-adjustable stand.
Both are 34-inch VA monitors with a 3440×1440 ultrawide resolution, so this is not a choice between different image classes. It is a choice between motion and immersion on one side, and brightness, connectivity and desk convenience on the other.

Odyssey G5 or Gigabyte G34WQC? The short answer
Choose the Samsung for high-refresh gaming
The Odyssey G5’s 165Hz ceiling is 21Hz higher than the G34WQC’s 144Hz. That difference is visible mainly in competitive games or whenever your graphics card can consistently render above 144 frames per second. It also gives the Samsung more headroom for a high-frame-rate desktop or simulator setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 1000R radius is another gaming-oriented decision. It wraps the screen more tightly around your field of view than Gigabyte’s 1500R curve. At a typical desk distance, that can make a large 21:9 image feel more enveloping and keep the edges at a more consistent viewing angle.
Choose the Gigabyte for a mixed work-and-play desk
The G34WQC is specified at 350 cd/m², versus 250 cd/m² for the Samsung. That gives it more brightness headroom in a sunlit room and helps ordinary SDR content look less subdued. It also carries a VESA DisplayHDR 400 listing, whereas Samsung lists HDR10.
Gigabyte is easier to share between devices: it provides two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. The included 100mm height adjustment is more useful for long work sessions than a stand that only tilts, and the 2W×2 speakers can handle basic system audio without adding separate desktop speakers.

What the two monitors have in common
3440×1440 ultrawide resolution
Both displays use 3440×1440, giving you the horizontal workspace of an ultrawide without dropping to the vertical pixel count of a 1080p panel. Games can show a wider view when they support 21:9, while productivity apps can place two substantial windows side by side.
The resolution also creates a meaningful graphics load. Rendering 3440×1440 requires substantially more GPU work than 2560×1440, so check that your graphics card can sustain the frame rates you want before treating 165Hz or 144Hz as a practical target.

VA panel characteristics
Both use VA technology. VA panels generally offer deeper native blacks than typical IPS alternatives, which benefits dark games and movies. They can also show some dark-level smearing, and the stated response figure alone does not tell you how much trailing or overshoot you will see at a particular refresh rate.
Samsung and Gigabyte both quote 1ms MPRT. MPRT is a motion-blur measurement mode, not a guarantee that every pixel transition completes in 1ms during ordinary use. Backlight-strobing modes can also reduce brightness and may not operate simultaneously with every variable-refresh setting.

Refresh rate, adaptive sync and gaming motion
165Hz versus 144Hz
At 165Hz, a new frame can arrive about every 6.06 milliseconds; at 144Hz, the interval is about 6.94 milliseconds. The numerical advantage is modest, but the Samsung is the faster panel on paper and gives compatible games a little more temporal resolution.
Do not buy the Samsung solely for the number if your system rarely exceeds 100 frames per second at 3440×1440. Adaptive sync can smooth variable frame rates on both models, and a stable 100–120 fps experience is usually preferable to a fluctuating rate that occasionally reaches the panel’s maximum.
FreeSync Premium on the Samsung
Samsung states that AMD FreeSync Premium uses adaptive sync to reduce tearing, stutter and input latency. In practice, variable refresh works by matching the monitor’s refresh timing to the GPU’s changing frame output within the supported range. Enable it in the monitor menu and in your graphics driver, then select the monitor’s maximum refresh rate in the operating system.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The G34WQC also supports adaptive-sync operation, but the cited specification does not give it the same FreeSync Premium wording. Check the monitor’s current manual and your graphics driver for the supported range and any restrictions at the exact regional SKU.
What independent measurements can and cannot tell you
Independent testing of both models includes brightness, HDR, response-time, input-lag, variable-refresh and ergonomics measurements. Those results are the right evidence for judging real ghosting, overshoot, HDR impact and latency. The manufacturers’ 1ms MPRT claims should not be used as substitutes for those measurements.
When comparing a review, check whether its response-time setting, refresh rate, overdrive mode and adaptive-sync state match your intended setup. A result measured at one overdrive level may not describe the behavior you get at a lower frame rate or with a different mode enabled.
Brightness, contrast and HDR
Why Gigabyte has the paper advantage
Gigabyte lists 350 cd/m² typical brightness and 3,000:1 typical contrast. Samsung lists 250 cd/m² typical brightness and 2,500:1 static contrast. The higher brightness specification favors the Gigabyte in rooms with strong ambient light and gives HDR highlights more output headroom.
Gigabyte also lists VESA DisplayHDR 400, a formal tier with defined display requirements. Samsung lists HDR10, which identifies HDR signal compatibility but does not by itself describe a brightness certification. Neither label alone predicts how dramatic HDR will look; tone mapping, black level, peak brightness behavior and any local-dimming capability determine the visible result.

What to expect from a VA ultrawide
Both monitors can deliver the high contrast that makes dark scenes more convincing than on many basic IPS displays. However, a VA panel’s dark transitions may be slower than its bright transitions. If you notice a dark trail behind moving objects, try the available response or overdrive levels and compare them at the frame rates you actually use. Excessive overdrive can replace blur with bright or dark overshoot.
Ports and multi-device use
Samsung’s simple two-input layout
The Odyssey G5 lists one DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0 input. That is enough for a gaming PC and one console or secondary computer, but you will need to swap cables when adding more sources. DisplayPort is the sensible connection for a PC targeting 3440×1440 at 165Hz; verify that your cable and graphics output support the selected mode.
Gigabyte’s four-input advantage
The G34WQC lists two DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. This is useful for a desktop, work laptop, console and second computer that remain connected at the same time. Input quantity does not guarantee that every source can drive 3440×1440 at the maximum refresh, so check each device’s output limits and use DisplayPort for the highest-refresh PC connection where appropriate.
Stand, speakers and mounting
Desk ergonomics
Samsung’s cited specification lists a tilt-only stand. You can angle the panel, but changing its height requires a monitor arm, riser or a different stand. Gigabyte includes 100mm of height adjustment, making it easier to place the top of the screen near eye level and reduce neck movement during long sessions.

VESA compatibility
The Samsung uses a 75×75mm VESA pattern; the Gigabyte uses 100×100mm. Check the arm or wall mount’s hole pattern, weight rating and screw length before ordering. A mount that accepts only 100×100mm will not directly fit the Samsung without an adapter, and an arm designed for a different weight range may not hold either ultrawide safely.

Built-in audio
Gigabyte lists two 2W speakers. They are convenient for alerts, calls or casual video, but they are not a replacement for dedicated speakers or headphones when sound quality matters. Samsung’s cited specification does not list built-in speakers, so plan on external audio for the Odyssey G5.

Competitive and fast-paced gaming
- Best fit: Samsung Odyssey G5. Its 165Hz maximum refresh and 1000R curve favor high-frame-rate play and a more enveloping view.
- Use DisplayPort 1.4 from the gaming PC, select 165Hz in the operating system and enable adaptive sync in both the monitor and driver.
- Test overdrive at your normal frame rate rather than assuming the most aggressive setting is best.
Single-player games and immersive simulation
- Close decision. Samsung’s tighter curve can feel more immersive, while Gigabyte’s greater brightness can make bright scenes easier to see in a lit room.
- If your room is dim and your GPU can exceed 144 fps, Samsung’s specification is more compelling. If you play mostly below 144 fps, the brightness and stand differences may matter more.
Office work, coding and content creation
- Best fit: Gigabyte G34WQC. Height adjustment, four inputs and built-in speakers reduce desk friction.
- The 3440×1440 canvas supports side-by-side documents and timelines, but verify that your applications scale cleanly at the chosen operating-system setting.
- The 1500R curve is less tight than Samsung’s 1000R, which some users may find easier for mixed text and window layouts.
Bright rooms and daytime use
Gigabyte’s 350 cd/m² typical brightness gives it the specification advantage. Neither monitor should be positioned directly opposite a bright window if you want consistent black levels and comfortable viewing, but the extra headroom can reduce the need to run the backlight at its limit.
How to set up either monitor for 3440×1440 high refresh
- Assemble the stand or attach a compatible VESA arm. Confirm the Samsung’s 75×75mm or Gigabyte’s 100×100mm pattern before tightening the mount.
- Connect the gaming PC with a DisplayPort 1.4 cable. Use HDMI 2.0 for a compatible secondary source, recognizing that the available refresh modes depend on the source and monitor.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen menu and select the DisplayPort or HDMI input you used. Enable adaptive sync or the corresponding variable-refresh option.
- In Windows, open Settings, choose System, then Display, select the ultrawide and open Advanced display. Set 3440×1440 and the highest refresh rate offered for that connection.
- In the GPU control panel, enable the driver’s variable-refresh option and confirm that the monitor is recognized at its intended refresh rate.
- Start with the monitor’s standard or moderate response setting. Check a moving test scene or a game at your usual frame rate, then adjust overdrive if you see obvious trailing or overshoot.
- For HDR, enable HDR in the operating system only when you are using HDR content. Calibrate the desktop and in-game brightness controls separately; an HDR label does not remove the need for correct tone mapping.
GPU and cable considerations
A 3440×1440 panel at 165Hz can demand high bandwidth and substantial rendering power. The monitor may accept the signal while the game cannot sustain the frame rate, so treat 165Hz as a ceiling rather than a performance promise. A DisplayPort 1.4 cable is the appropriate accessory for a high-refresh PC connection, but the graphics card’s output standard and the cable’s quality still determine whether the desired mode appears.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For consoles and laptops, check their documented ultrawide support before buying. Some devices output only standard 16:9 resolutions, leaving unused space or requiring scaling. The Gigabyte’s extra inputs make switching easier, but they do not change a source device’s maximum resolution or refresh rate.
Regional model and buying checks
Model suffixes can differ by country. The Samsung specification cited for this comparison is LC34G55TWWPXXU, while other regions use related LC34G55T suffixes. Confirm the exact regional listing for ports, stand, power requirements, warranty terms and included accessories. Gigabyte specifications can likewise vary by market or revision.
Check live price, stock, seller and warranty immediately before purchase because those details change. If you plan to use an arm, verify the VESA pattern and load rating first; if you plan to run 3440×1440 at high refresh, budget for a suitable DisplayPort 1.4 cable.
Final decision
Buy the Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55T when your priority is gaming speed, a tight 1000R wraparound view and the extra margin provided by 165Hz. Buy the Gigabyte G34WQC when your monitor must also serve as a flexible workstation: its 350 cd/m² specification, DisplayHDR 400 listing, four video inputs, height adjustment and speakers are practical advantages every day.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBecause both deliver 34-inch 3440×1440 VA images, neither is universally superior. The right answer depends on whether you will notice the Samsung’s additional 21Hz and tighter curve more often than you will use Gigabyte’s brightness, connectivity and ergonomic features.
