If your Samsung monitor shows a picture but stays silent, first confirm that the exact model can produce sound. Some Samsung monitors have built-in speakers, some only provide an audio-out jack, and some provide no monitor audio at all. Then check the monitor’s volume and speaker setting, select the monitor as the source device’s audio output, and isolate the cable and source. The sequence below identifies whether the limitation is the monitor, a setting, the connected device, or the connection.

Start with the monitor’s audio capability

HDMI carries audio, but an HDMI socket does not prove that a monitor has speakers or supports audio output. Samsung states that many newer monitors include built-in speakers, while also noting that not all models have speakers or support audio over HDMI. The model code is therefore the first fact to verify.

Check the exact model code

Find the model code on the rear label, the original packaging, or the monitor’s on-screen information page. Search that code in Samsung’s support site and open the specifications or manual. Look specifically for:

  • Built-in speakers
  • An audio-out or headphone jack
  • Supported audio inputs, such as HDMI or DisplayPort
  • Any speaker-selection or sound-test menu

If the specifications list no speakers, the monitor cannot play sound by itself. You may still be able to use headphones or powered speakers connected to a supported audio-out port, or connect them directly to the computer, console, or other source.

Do not infer support from the cable

A monitor can display video over HDMI while sending no sound because its design omits speakers, its audio output is disabled, or the source is routing audio elsewhere. DVI and VGA commonly carry video without the same audio path as HDMI or DisplayPort, so the connector type and the monitor’s documented capabilities both matter. Samsung recommends HDMI or DisplayPort when both devices support them, with DVI or VGA as alternatives where appropriate.

Check the monitor’s own controls

When the model has speakers, eliminate the simple monitor-side causes before changing computer drivers or buying a cable.

Unmute and raise the volume

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen controls with its joystick or buttons.
  2. Increase the volume several steps above zero.
  3. Confirm that mute is off.
  4. Play a known audio source while making the change so you can hear the result immediately.

Some models expose volume through a quick control, while others place it in a sound menu. The exact label and navigation depend on the model manual.

Choose the intended speaker

Models with a Speaker Select option may let you choose internal or TV speakers versus external speakers. Select the internal option when you want the monitor’s own speakers. Samsung notes that a Not Available message can appear when the monitor is configured for external speakers but no external speakers are connected. Switch to the internal speaker option, if the model provides it, then test again.

Run the built-in sound test when available

Some remote-equipped Samsung displays include Support → Self Diagnosis → Sound Test. The menu is not present on every monitor, and wording can vary. Follow the exact model manual.

Amazon Basics Stereo 2.0 Speakers for PC or Laptop with Volume Control, 3.5mm Aux Input, USB-Powered, 1 Pair, Black
  • External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
  • USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
  • In-line volume control for easy access
  • Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
  • Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
  • Test fails: Samsung directs you toward service because the monitor cannot reproduce its own test tone.
  • Test passes: The monitor’s speaker hardware can produce sound under its internal test. Concentrate on the source device, output selection, volume, and cable.

A passed test does not prove that every input or every external device is configured correctly; it only moves the likely fault outside the monitor’s basic speaker function.

Select the Samsung monitor as the audio output

A computer can send video to a monitor while continuing to send audio to its built-in speakers, a headset, a dock, or another display. Select the monitor or its HDMI/DisplayPort audio device explicitly.

Windows

  1. Open the sound output list from the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  2. Select the entry representing the Samsung monitor, HDMI, or DisplayPort connection.
  3. Raise the system volume and verify that the output is not muted.
  4. Start playback and check whether the output level indicator moves.

If the monitor does not appear in the list, check the graphics driver as Samsung advises. The display driver commonly provides the HDMI or DisplayPort audio device, so a video connection can work while the audio endpoint is missing or disabled. Install the appropriate current driver for the computer’s graphics hardware, restart, and check the output list again.

macOS

  1. Open System Settings → Sound.
  2. Under output, choose the Samsung monitor or its HDMI/DisplayPort entry.
  3. Raise the output volume and make sure mute is disabled.
  4. Play audio again before changing any other setting.

If macOS lists the monitor but it remains silent, verify the monitor’s own volume and speaker selection. If macOS does not list it, reconnect the display and check the Mac’s display and graphics support.

Consoles and other source devices

Open the console, streaming box, or other source’s audio-output settings and choose HDMI or the monitor’s named output. Also check the source’s master volume and mute state. A console may be configured for a headset, optical output, or a different HDMI device even though its picture appears on the Samsung monitor.

Reseat and isolate the signal path

Once the monitor and source settings are correct, test the physical path. The goal is to change one element at a time so you can identify the failing part instead of guessing.

Reconnect both ends

  1. Turn off playback and, if practical, the source device.
  2. Disconnect the video cable from the monitor and source.
  3. Inspect the plugs for bent contacts, looseness, or visible damage.
  4. Reconnect firmly at both ends.
  5. Start the source and select the monitor as the output again.

If possible, repeat the test with a known-working HDMI or DisplayPort cable. Do not assume a new cable is necessary until this swap changes the result; the existing cable may be fine, and replacing it will not add speakers to a model that has none.

Swap the source device

Connect another known-working source to the same Samsung monitor port with the same cable. For example, test a different computer or console. If the second source produces sound, the original source’s output selection, driver, or audio hardware is the likely cause. If neither source produces sound, continue with the monitor’s capabilities, port settings, and cable checks.

Test the original source somewhere else

Connect headphones or powered speakers to the original computer or source. If they are also silent, the problem is upstream of the monitor: source volume, mute, application output, driver, or source hardware. If headphones work but the monitor does not, focus on the monitor output selection and video cable.

Choose the right connection route

There are three practical ways to hear audio in a monitor setup. The correct choice depends on what the exact model supports.

Route What it requires Typical setting to check Limit
Built-in monitor speakers A Samsung model with documented internal speakers and a supported audio input Select the monitor/HDMI/DisplayPort output on the source; unmute and raise monitor volume Unavailable on models without speakers
Monitor audio-out or headphone jack A model with a documented audio-out port, plus headphones or powered speakers Send audio to the monitor, then adjust the connected listening device The jack passes or controls audio only when the model supports that path
Direct connection to the computer or source Headphones or powered speakers connected to the source’s compatible audio output Select the source’s headphone, line-out, USB, or other audio device Audio volume may be independent of the monitor’s on-screen controls

Powered computer speakers are a fallback when the monitor has no speakers. They can connect directly to the computer or, where supported, to the monitor’s audio-out port. Wired headphones are also useful as a diagnostic tool because they quickly show whether the source itself is producing audio. Confirm connector type and power requirements for the equipment you already have.

Do not apply soundbar advice automatically

Samsung’s gaming-monitor guidance describes sound transmission to a soundbar through an ARC-capable HDMI input. That applies only when the exact monitor has an ARC HDMI input and the soundbar and source are arranged for ARC. Ordinary computer-monitor HDMI connections should not be assumed to support ARC or soundbar audio.

Use port and input settings carefully

Some Samsung troubleshooting paths expose HDMI or input-version choices, including labels such as HDMI 2.0 or version 1.4. These are model-specific settings, not general requirements for every monitor. Do not change an input version simply because the monitor is silent; consult the exact manual and use the setting supported by both the source and cable.

If the display has multiple HDMI or DisplayPort inputs, test another documented input. A single damaged port can produce a picture intermittently or fail to carry audio while another port works. Record which port, cable, and source combination succeeds so you can return to a stable configuration.

The monitor has no speakers

Nothing is defective if the specifications omit speakers. Use the source’s headphone or speaker output, or a supported monitor audio-out jack. A display-only model will continue to show video normally while remaining silent.

The monitor has speakers, but the sound test fails

A failed internal sound test points to a monitor-side fault. Samsung recommends requesting service in that situation. Keep the model code, purchase information, and the test result available when contacting support.

The sound test passes, but external audio is silent

Return to the source output list, mute and volume controls, graphics driver, cable, and port swaps. Samsung says service is not required based on a passed sound test alone; the next focus is the connected source or connection.

No sound test is available

Complete the capability check, monitor controls, source-output selection, cable reseat, and isolation swaps. If the documented setup supports audio and the monitor remains silent, use Samsung Support to search by model code for the correct manual and service route.

A quick diagnostic checklist

  • Confirm the exact model has speakers or a supported audio-out path.
  • Verify that HDMI or DisplayPort is an audio-capable route for that model.
  • Unmute the monitor and raise its volume.
  • Select internal speakers instead of external speakers when appropriate.
  • Choose the Samsung monitor/HDMI/DisplayPort output on Windows, macOS, or the source device.
  • Check the source volume, mute state, and application output.
  • Reconnect both cable ends and test a known-working cable.
  • Try another source on the same monitor port.
  • Try headphones or speakers on the original source.
  • Run Support → Self Diagnosis → Sound Test if the model offers it.
  • Request service after a failed sound test or after supported setup checks do not resolve the fault.

The key distinction is capability versus configuration: a Samsung monitor that lacks speakers cannot be fixed with a driver or cable, while a speaker-equipped model that passes its internal test usually needs its source output or connection corrected.
