To connect a Samsung monitor to a computer, match a video output on the computer to a video input the monitor supports, connect them with a suitable cable, power on both devices, and select the monitor’s matching input. HDMI or DisplayPort is usually the simplest direct connection when both devices have the same port. USB-C works for video only when the specific computer, monitor, and cable support it.
1. Check the ports on both devices
Look at the monitor’s rear panel and the computer’s video outputs. Identify the actual ports before choosing a cable: HDMI-to-HDMI or DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort is a direct option when both devices support that connection. Port availability and capabilities vary by model, so check the monitor’s manual and the computer’s specifications.

HDMI and DisplayPort carry video and audio. USB-C can carry video, audio, and data on supported configurations, but the port’s shape alone does not confirm that it supports video output. Samsung documents models and cases where a USB-C port is for peripherals rather than PC video; use HDMI or DisplayPort in those cases. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting page states of the peripheral-port case: “The USB-C connection allows the monitor to function as a USB hub for the connected PC.” It adds: “Video function is not supported through this input. Please use an HDMI or DisplayPort connection to play content from a PC.” That guidance applies to the case described on that page, not to every Samsung monitor.

Use a cable supported by both ends and capable of the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. Samsung recommends a high-quality, high-speed HDMI cable and advises checking the device manual for its supported HDMI version. A cable label by itself does not guarantee a particular display mode: the monitor, computer, ports, connection versions, and settings all affect the result.

If the devices have no matching video port, first identify the computer’s output and the monitor’s input, then choose an adapter designed for that conversion and signal direction. Samsung gives HDMI-to-DVI as an adapter example and cautions that the connection is limited by its weaker link; the result may fall short of the monitor’s maximum capability. Do not assume that an adapter supports every resolution or refresh rate.
Samsung’s U.S. port glossary lists these interface examples. They are not guarantees for every monitor or computer; confirm the exact model specifications at both ends.

Special case: Samsung Smart Monitor M80B
Samsung Singapore’s M80B instructions specify a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 10G cable for proper screen output. The instructions distinguish the USB-C port for the source device from a separate port for USB peripherals, and note that USB-C Preference settings affect resolution and data speed. These details are specific to the M80B; follow its model instructions rather than applying them to another Samsung monitor.
3. Connect the monitor and start the devices
- Place the monitor and connect the video signal cable between the computer and the monitor.
- Connect the monitor’s power cable to the monitor and a power outlet.
- Turn on the computer and check whether the monitor displays an image.
Samsung’s general setup guidance says a monitor is ready after connection and does not require a special driver. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee for every operating system, monitor feature, or accessory; consult the model documentation if a feature or connection does not work.

4. Select the input that matches the cable
If the screen says “Check Signal Cable,” the monitor may be set to a different input from the one in use. Use the monitor’s Source button or joystick to choose the connected port. Match the selection to the physical connection—for example, HDMI 1 if the cable is connected to HDMI 1, or DisplayPort if it is connected there. The available names and controls vary by model.

- Check power and the cable. Confirm the computer is on, then reseat the signal cable at both the computer and monitor.
- Check the selected input. Choose the monitor input that corresponds to the port where the cable is connected.
- Confirm that the computer port outputs video. A physical port or connector is not proof that it supports the video connection you are attempting.
- Confirm the monitor accepts video on that input. Check the model’s manual, particularly for USB-C ports that may serve peripherals rather than display input.
- If DisplayPort is the problem, check version compatibility. In a specific Samsung gaming-monitor support case, Samsung advises checking whether the PC supports DisplayPort 1.4 and trying another DisplayPort version setting, including 1.1 or 1.2. Menu names and supported versions differ by model; reconnect the cable after changing a setting and try another cable or adapter if needed.
- If USB-C is the problem, verify all three parts of the connection. The computer must output video over USB-C, the monitor’s chosen USB-C port must accept video, and the cable must support the required mode. For the M80B, follow its instructions for the source-device port and USB-C Preference setting.
- Use model-specific instructions for remaining issues. Check the exact monitor manual and support page rather than applying another model’s menu sequence.
Samsung’s general connection and driver guidance is from its Russia support page, updated 2025-04-23; the M80B USB-C instructions are from Samsung Singapore, also updated 2025-04-23. The port capability examples and gaming-monitor troubleshooting guidance are from Samsung U.S. support. Regional guidance and model menus can differ, so the manual for the exact monitor remains the reference for its supported ports and settings.
