If Samsung Keyboard keeps switching languages, changing from QWERTY, becoming floating or split, or forgetting your preferences, work through the controls in this order: confirm Samsung Keyboard is the default, correct the language and layout, restore the normal keyboard mode, stop spacebar language switching, restart and optimize the phone, then clear cache and only lastly clear app data. Update the phone and test Safe mode if a third-party app is interfering.
These are separate settings, so one change can look like a complete keyboard reset. The exact labels differ by Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, keyboard version, language and region.

First identify which keyboard setting changed
“Layout,” “language,” “mode” and “default keyboard” are different controls. Matching the symptom to the right control prevents you from erasing settings unnecessarily.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you see | Most relevant control | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Letters or symbols are arranged differently, or the wrong alphabet appears | Languages and types | Choose the affected language and the intended layout, such as QWERTY. |
| The keyboard is smaller, moved to one side, floating, or split | Keyboard mode | Return to the normal/full mode for the current orientation. |
| Swiping across the spacebar changes the input language | Smart input | Turn off changing input language by swipe, or use the language button instead. |
| A different keyboard appears in every app | Default keyboard | Select Samsung Keyboard under the system’s default-keyboard selector. |
| Your choices vanish after an app or system problem | App data or software state | Restart, clear cache, check updates, and clear data only with a record of your preferences. |
A hardware accessory is not required for these documented fixes. The problem is normally in the keyboard selection, its saved configuration, software state, or another app.

Use the least-disruptive fix first
Start with settings that do not remove anything. Then progress to actions that reset temporary files or saved preferences.
| Order | Action | Effect on your settings |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check default keyboard, language/layout, mode and Smart input | Changes only the selected option. |
| 2 | Close apps, optimize where available, and restart | Does not intentionally erase Samsung Keyboard preferences. |
| 3 | Clear Samsung Keyboard cache | Removes temporary files; it is lower impact than clearing data. |
| 4 | Clear Samsung Keyboard data | May erase saved languages, layouts and other custom preferences. |
| 5 | Check for Galaxy and Samsung Keyboard updates; test Safe mode | Addresses software defects or third-party interference. |
Menu names and locations can move after an update. If a path does not match your phone, open Settings and search for Samsung Keyboard, Keyboard list and default, or Languages and types.
1. Confirm Samsung Keyboard is the default
A different keyboard app can take over even when Samsung Keyboard is installed. Samsung Support says, “We recommend using the Samsung Keyboard that comes preinstalled on your device,” and notes that third-party keyboard apps may cause problems.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Open Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard.
- Select Samsung Keyboard.
Some Galaxy versions place the same controls under Language and input or On-screen keyboard. The important check is the active default, not merely whether Samsung Keyboard appears in the installed-app list.
After selecting it, open a text field in more than one app. If Samsung Keyboard now appears consistently, the previous behavior came from keyboard selection rather than from the QWERTY layout itself. If another keyboard returns, review recently installed keyboard, overlay, automation or customization apps before changing Samsung Keyboard data.

2. Correct the language and layout
When the keys show the wrong letters, punctuation or alphabet, open Samsung Keyboard’s own settings rather than changing the phone’s entire system language.
- Open any app with a text field so Samsung Keyboard appears.
- Tap the keyboard’s Settings icon. You can also open Settings and search for Samsung Keyboard.
- Tap Languages and types. Older screens may use Input languages or a similar label.
- Select the language that is behaving incorrectly.
- Choose the intended layout, such as QWERTY, then return to typing and test it.
If the keyboard keeps selecting the wrong language, remove languages you do not use or reorder them so the preferred language is easier to select. Keep only the layouts you actually need while troubleshooting; multiple enabled languages make an accidental switch harder to diagnose.
Language and layout are independent. You can have the correct language with an unexpected arrangement, or the expected QWERTY arrangement while the input language is wrong. Change the affected language entry instead of repeatedly tapping the globe or language key without checking its configuration.
3. Restore the normal keyboard mode
A keyboard that suddenly becomes narrow, moves away from the bottom edge, or divides into two halves has probably changed mode rather than lost its language settings. Samsung documents normal/full, one-handed, floating and split modes, and the available choices can depend on screen orientation.
- Open Samsung Keyboard in a text field.
- Open the keyboard toolbar or its Settings menu.
- Find Mode or the keyboard-layout mode control.
- Choose the normal/full keyboard for the current orientation.
- Rotate the phone once and verify the mode in both portrait and landscape if you use both.
One-handed mode intentionally moves and shrinks the keys. Floating mode detaches the keyboard so it can be repositioned. Split mode separates the keys, which can be useful on a large screen but looks like a fault when enabled accidentally. Changing mode does not repair a wrong language; handle that separately under Languages and types.

4. Stop accidental language changes from a spacebar swipe
Samsung Keyboard can change input language when you swipe across the spacebar if its smart-input language-switching option is enabled. This is a common explanation for a keyboard that appears to “reset” while you type.
- Open Samsung Keyboard’s Settings.
- Tap Smart input or the closest equivalent on your version.
- Find the option for changing the input language by swiping on the spacebar.
- Turn that option off.
- Return to a text field and test ordinary spacebar presses and swipes.
Samsung’s Korean service guidance describes selecting a language button instead of relying on a spacebar swipe. If your version offers a dedicated language button, use it deliberately when you need to change languages. Labels vary by model, software release, language and region, so search Settings for “swipe,” “input language” or “spacebar” if the Smart input page is organized differently.
5. Close apps, optimize and restart
Temporary software states can make a correct configuration behave incorrectly. Samsung’s first-line guidance is to close running apps, use Device Care’s optimization option where available, and restart the phone.
- Save work in open apps.
- Open recent apps and close running apps, especially any keyboard, overlay or customization utility.
- Open Device Care and tap Optimize now if that option is available on your Galaxy.
- Restart the phone using the normal power-menu restart command.
- Open a text field and test the keyboard before changing another setting.
A restart can clear a minor process or input-service glitch without changing your saved languages and layouts. If the keyboard is correct immediately after restarting but changes again later, note which action precedes the change: rotating the phone, swiping the spacebar, opening a particular app, or launching another keyboard. That clue determines whether to revisit mode, Smart input, default selection or third-party interference.
6. Clear cache before clearing Samsung Keyboard data
Use this step only after checking the visible settings and restarting. Cache removal is the lower-impact reset; clearing data is more disruptive.

Clear the cache
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select Samsung Keyboard. If it is not listed, use the system-app filter or search within Apps.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Restart the phone and test typing.
Clearing cache removes temporary app files. It is not the same as clearing data and should be attempted first when the keyboard is misbehaving but your preferred languages and layout are still visible.
Clear data only after recording your preferences
If the problem survives a cache clear, you can return to Settings > Apps > Samsung Keyboard > Storage and choose Clear data. Before doing so, write down or capture screenshots of your enabled languages, their order, layout choices, mode and Smart input options.
Data removal can erase saved keyboard preferences. Afterward, reopen a text field, select Samsung Keyboard as the default if necessary, add the languages you use, select the intended layout, restore normal/full mode and review Smart input. Treat this as a configuration reset, not as a guaranteed cure for a third-party app that keeps taking control.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating Galaxy software and Samsung Keyboard updates. Updates can change menu names, add or remove layouts, or correct input-service bugs, so recheck your choices afterward.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Settings and check for an available Galaxy software update.
- Check for available Samsung Keyboard updates through the update channel provided on your device.
- Install updates according to the phone’s instructions and restart when prompted.
- Recheck Default keyboard, Languages and types, keyboard Mode and Smart input.
Do not assume an update preserved every option exactly as it was. Samsung notes that menu labels and available choices vary by Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, keyboard version, language and region. If a familiar control moved, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard” instead of enabling random alternatives.

8. Test Safe mode for third-party interference
If the keyboard works normally in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a strong suspect. Samsung recommends Safe mode when a third-party app may be causing the behavior.
- Start the phone in its built-in Safe mode using the procedure shown for your Galaxy model.
- Open several text fields and test language selection, layout, mode and ordinary typing.
- Use the phone long enough to reproduce the problem, including the action that normally triggers it.
- If the problem disappears, restart normally and review recently installed or recently updated keyboard, overlay, automation and customization apps.
- Remove or disable likely offenders one at a time, then test again.
Safe mode is a comparison, not a permanent replacement for normal operation. If the same layout or language change occurs in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be responsible; return to the Samsung Keyboard settings, cache/data and update branches. If the issue occurs only outside Safe mode, focus on apps that can display over other apps, provide alternate keyboards, automate gestures or customize the system interface.
What to do when settings keep disappearing
When preferences vanish repeatedly, follow this decision path rather than clearing data again and again.
- Another keyboard appears: Recheck Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard, then inspect third-party keyboard apps.
- The same language returns after typing: Disable spacebar-swipe language switching under Smart input and remove unused enabled languages.
- The shape changes after rotating the phone: Set the normal/full mode for the relevant orientation; one-handed, floating and split modes are separate from language.
- The keyboard is wrong immediately after a software update: Revisit the default, language/layout, mode and Smart input pages because labels and choices may have changed.
- The problem survives all settings checks: Restart, clear cache, install updates and then test Safe mode. Clear data only after recording preferences.
This sequence separates a recurring selection problem from a saved-configuration problem. It also prevents a data reset from masking the app that is actually changing the keyboard.
Why the menu path may not match your Galaxy
Samsung uses different labels across Galaxy models, One UI and Android releases. A US or Canadian phone may show Keyboard list and default, while another model places the selector under Language and input or On-screen keyboard. Older Samsung Keyboard screens may say Input languages instead of Languages and types.
Language and regional firmware can also affect which layouts and controls are offered. Do not interpret a missing option as proof that the keyboard is damaged. Search Settings for the feature name, open Samsung Keyboard from a text field, and check both portrait and landscape orientations. The same physical keys can look different because the mode changed, while a different alphabet indicates a language selection.
When to stop troubleshooting in Settings
Samsung’s documented branches cover configuration, default-keyboard selection, third-party interference, stale app data and software-version issues. If the behavior continues after the default, language/layout, mode and Smart input checks; a restart; cache clearing; updates; a cautious data reset; and Safe mode testing, contact Samsung support with the Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, keyboard version, affected languages and the exact trigger.
