Samsung Electronics posted record quarterly revenue and operating profit in Q2 2026, even as its combined Mobile eXperience (MX) and Networks businesses swung to an operating loss. The contrast is real, but the loss is not a phone-only figure: Samsung reports MX and Networks together. Its semiconductor division generated nearly all of the quarter’s operating profit.
How did Samsung set records while its mobile-related business lost money?
The figures cover different parts of Samsung Electronics. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, the company reported consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion, both quarterly records. Its semiconductor-led Device Solutions (DS) division contributed KRW 127.5 trillion in revenue and KRW 89.2 trillion in operating profit. The company’s Q2 results show how semiconductor earnings outweighed weakness elsewhere.

Samsung reported KRW 33.2 trillion in revenue and an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion for MX and Networks combined. That is a mobile-related segment result, not a standalone smartphone loss: Samsung’s release does not separate phone earnings from Networks. The record consolidated result and the segment loss are therefore not contradictory; they describe different groupings of businesses.

Samsung said MX revenue grew year over year, supported by solid sales of the Galaxy S26 series and strong Galaxy A-series momentum. It attributed the earnings decline to elevated component costs across the industry. In other words, the disclosed picture is not simply “phones failed to sell”: revenue increased year over year, while costs squeezed earnings.

Samsung’s earnings release states: “While revenue grew year-on-year (YoY) on solid sales of the Galaxy S26 series and strong Galaxy A series momentum, earnings declined due to elevated component cost pressures across the industry.” This is Samsung’s corporate explanation, not a named executive’s comment; the release does not quantify the component-cost impact.
How sharp was the change from Q1?
Samsung’s combined MX and Networks result changed substantially from the prior quarter. Q1 figures were also reported by Samsung, in its April 30 results release.

The sequential reversal is significant, but a quarter-to-quarter comparison should be read with seasonality and business mix in mind. It does not, on its own, establish a lasting trend in phone profitability.
Does Samsung’s latest Q3 update show that phones recovered?
No. On October 8, 2026, Samsung issued Q3 consolidated earnings guidance estimating sales of approximately KRW 195 trillion and operating profit of approximately KRW 107.40 trillion. Those are estimates, not finalized results, and the guidance does not provide Q3 MX results. As of October 8, the latest finalized divisional figures available were for Q2, ended June 30.

The Q3 company-wide estimate may indicate that Samsung expected another strong consolidated quarter, but it cannot show whether Galaxy phones or the combined MX and Networks businesses returned to profit. That answer requires finalized divisional results.
