Where the interruption appears is the first clue: a window inside a webpage, a notification from a site, and an ad over your Home screen or another app are different problems. Use the matching fix below; Samsung says ads outside normal browsing can commonly come from a recently installed third-party app, but that is not the only possible cause.
First, identify what is popping up
- Inside a webpage or in a new browser tab: turn on Samsung Internet’s built-in pop-up blocker.
- A banner or alert from a website: revoke that site’s notification permission.
- On the Home screen, over another app, or Samsung Internet opening unexpectedly: check recently installed or updated apps. Samsung notes that third-party apps can cause ads outside the browser. Samsung’s pop-up troubleshooting guide covers these different symptoms.
Block pop-ups inside Samsung Internet
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Tap the three-line Menu.
- Tap Settings, then Privacy dashboard.
- Turn on Block pop-ups.
This setting targets pop-ups in the browser; it is not a system-wide ad blocker. If unwanted ads remain on webpages, an optional compatible blocker may be available under Menu > Ad blockers. Samsung says an installed blocker is automatically turned on, and its switch can enable or disable it. Some blockers may cost money. Samsung’s guide describes the browser option; availability can vary.

Turn off a website’s notifications
If the interruption is a site alert rather than a browser window, disable the permission for that site. Samsung Hong Kong documents this route for its products:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open notifications.
- Slide the website notification to the right and open its settings.
- Switch off notifications for that website.
If the notification has already disappeared, use Settings > Notifications > [the browser that sent it] > Sites, then disable the relevant site. The browser may be Samsung Internet or Chrome. This route is from Samsung’s Hong Kong support instructions, updated February 3, 2026; labels and screens may differ on other devices or software versions. Samsung Hong Kong’s notification instructions show the steps.

Find an app causing ads or unexpected browser launches
When ads appear outside webpages, use Safe mode to check whether a third-party app is involved. Third-party apps do not run in Safe mode, so if the ads stop there, an installed app is a likely lead—not proof that the phone is infected.
- Start the phone in Safe mode. Samsung’s pop-up guide explains how to enter it.
- If the ads stop, review apps you installed or updated shortly before the problem began.
- Uninstall a likely suspect, restart the phone normally, and check whether the behavior stops.
- If it continues, repeat the process with another recent app.
Samsung also documents a Samsung Internet Privacy dashboard control for preventing a selected app from opening Internet in its German guide. The option and wording may vary by region, carrier, model, and software, so treat it as an additional, version-dependent control rather than the first diagnostic step. Samsung Germany’s Samsung Internet guide, updated March 9, 2026, describes browser settings and this app-specific control.

Do pop-ups mean the phone has malware?
Not necessarily. Samsung says Galaxy and Play Store apps are scanned before download and that malware is very unlikely, while warning that ads or email may try to download harmful software. Avoid tapping suspicious download prompts. Samsung does not recommend third-party anti-malware apps; start with the browser setting, notification permission, or app diagnosis that matches the symptom. Samsung’s malware guidance explains its advice.

When the menu path does not match
Samsung cautions that available settings and screens can vary by device model, software version, carrier, and region. Look for the named setting in your phone’s Settings or Samsung Internet menus, or consult Samsung support for your country and model. A path documented for one region is a useful guide, not a guarantee that every Galaxy phone shows identical labels.
