Buy the Samsung HW-Q990H if you want the most convincing film and game surround from one box. It includes a subwoofer and wireless rear speakers, so sound can arrive from behind and above you without buying extra components. Choose the Sonos Arc Ultra if you want a cleaner, single-bar installation, put a high value on music playback, or plan to build a Sonos system gradually. The right choice still depends on your room, TV connections, local price and whether you can place speakers behind the seating position.
Samsung HW-Q990H vs. Sonos Arc Ultra at a glance
| Question | Samsung HW-Q990H | Sonos Arc Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| What is in the box? | 11.1.4-channel package with a main soundbar, wireless rear speakers and a subwoofer | One soundbar; Sub and Era 300 rear speakers are optional additions |
| Manufacturer channel description | 7.0.2 main bar plus 4.0.2 rear speakers | 9.1.4 spatial-audio experience from the bar |
| Best fit | Movies, games and rooms where rear speakers can be positioned correctly | Simple installation, music listening and gradual expansion |
| Inputs | HDMI 2.1 inputs with pass-through up to 4K/120 Hz listed on Samsung’s U.S. page | HDMI eARC output; no HDMI input for source pass-through reported in the comparison |
| Room tuning and dialogue tools | SpaceFit Sound Pro, Voice Enhancement, Sound Elevation and Auto Volume | Trueplay, four Speech Enhancement levels, Night Sound and adjustable EQ |
| U.S. price shown on the cited pages | $1,999.99 on Samsung’s page checked October 13, 2026; delivery and pickup were unavailable for that checked location | $1,099 on Sonos’ U.S. comparison page |
Those channel numbers are product specifications, not a promise that two rooms will hear equivalent surround. The Samsung bundle has separate speakers physically behind you. Arc Ultra creates its quoted spatial layout from one cabinet, drivers and signal processing until you add Sonos surrounds.

What you actually get with each system
Samsung is a complete multi-speaker cinema system
Samsung describes the HW-Q990H as an 11.1.4-channel system with 23 speakers. Its announced layout is a 7.0.2 main bar and two 4.0.2 rear speakers, plus the included subwoofer. The rears and subwoofer communicate wirelessly with the bar, but “wireless” does not mean they can be placed without power: each rear and the subwoofer still need a suitable power outlet and clear placement.
The feature list on Samsung’s 2026 U.S. product page includes wireless Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Eclipsa Audio, Q-Symphony, SpaceFit Sound Pro, Voice Enhancement and HDMI 2.1 pass-through up to 4K/120 Hz. Q-Symphony is relevant when you have a compatible Samsung television; it is not a reason to buy the bar if your TV cannot use that feature.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Samsung also describes Sound Elevation as lifting dialogue toward the center of the screen and Auto Volume as keeping volume more consistent across channels and content. Those are Samsung’s descriptions of its processing, not independent laboratory measurements.
Arc Ultra is one bar first, expandable later
Sonos describes Arc Ultra as a 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar. The U.K. technical page lists 15 Class-D amplifiers, nine tweeters, six midwoofers and a Sound Motion woofer. Sonos’ U.S. comparison page lists 14 drivers, so treat the driver count as a page- and market-specific specification rather than a directly comparable score against Samsung’s 23-speaker package.
The bar measures 75 × 1,178 × 110.6 mm and weighs 5.9 kg according to Sonos’ listed specifications. It can be paired with a Sonos Sub and Era 300 rear speakers for a fuller surround system. Those additions turn the initial single-bar purchase into a multi-component system and add cost; the cited pages do not state current prices for the optional components.

Which one sounds better for movies and games?
Samsung’s advantage is physical separation
In What Hi-Fi?’s July 13, 2026 direct comparison, the Samsung package produced stronger surround and height effects. That conclusion follows the hardware arrangement: effects can come from dedicated speakers behind the listener and a separate subwoofer, rather than being simulated from the front of the room. In a correctly arranged room, aircraft, ambient effects and movement across the rear channels should have a more obvious location.
The Samsung system also lists Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Eclipsa Audio support in that comparison. Exact format support and input behavior can vary by region and connected equipment, so check the documentation for the model sold where you live before assuming every format will pass through.

Arc Ultra favors a simpler front-of-room presentation
Arc Ultra can create a spacious Atmos presentation from its single cabinet, but it does not put a physical speaker behind the sofa until you add rear units. What Hi-Fi? described the solo bar as less enveloping than the complete Samsung package for surround and height effects. That does not make Arc Ultra poor for films; it makes its result more dependent on the room, the bar’s processing and the listener’s expectations.
If your seating is against a wall, there is no practical space for rear speakers, or you do not want speaker stands and power cables behind the sofa, the Arc Ultra’s compromise may be preferable. If you have open space to either side and behind the listening position, Samsung’s included rears are the stronger cinema choice.
Which is better for music and dialogue?
Sonos has the smoother music presentation in the published comparison
What Hi-Fi? preferred Arc Ultra’s more rounded, smoother and richer presentation for music. That is a listening judgment from that publication, not an independently reproduced measurement, but it is a useful distinction: Arc Ultra may appeal more if you regularly listen to albums, radio and podcasts as well as watching television.
Sonos provides four Speech Enhancement levels, Night Sound, adjustable equalization and Trueplay room tuning for iOS and Android. Speech Enhancement can increase vocal intelligibility without requiring a permanent change to every other part of the soundtrack. Night Sound is intended for lower-impact late-night listening, while Trueplay adapts the response to the room using a supported mobile device.
Samsung supplies several dialogue and consistency controls
The HW-Q990H lists Voice Enhancement, Sound Elevation and Auto Volume. Samsung says Sound Elevation raises dialogue toward the screen’s center and Auto Volume maintains consistent volume across channels and content. These controls are useful when voices are hard to follow or streaming services vary sharply in loudness, but the exact result depends on the program mix and room.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

For dialogue-heavy viewing, compare the controls you are actually likely to use. Sonos exposes four Speech Enhancement levels and Trueplay on both iOS and Android. Samsung offers its own enhancement and calibration features, but the cited material does not specify the number of adjustment levels or a supported-phone requirement.

Samsung is easier when the soundbar must handle source switching
Samsung’s U.S. page lists HDMI 2.1 inputs and pass-through up to 4K/120 Hz. That can simplify a console connection: a compatible console can connect to the soundbar, and the bar can pass the video signal to a compatible television while sending audio to the speakers. Confirm that the TV, cable and console all support the desired resolution and refresh rate; one older link in the chain can limit the result.
Arc Ultra relies on the television’s eARC path
The comparison reports that Arc Ultra has an eARC output but no HDMI input for pass-through. In practice, connect source devices to the TV and send audio from the TV’s eARC port to Arc Ultra. A TV with too few HDMI ports, limited eARC support or restrictions on high-refresh gaming may require an external switch or a different connection plan.
Sonos lists stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, multichannel PCM and DTS Digital Surround among Arc Ultra’s home-cinema formats. The specification says eARC is required for certain formats and notes that DTS Digital Surround support does not indicate a licensed decoder. Do not assume that a format listed by the bar will reach it when the TV only provides basic ARC.
Room layout and installation requirements
Plan the HW-Q990H around the listening position
- Place the main bar centrally below or in front of the TV, with its upward-firing drivers unobstructed.
- Put the two wireless rear speakers behind or beside the main seating area, keeping their channels left and right as intended.
- Provide power outlets for both rears and the subwoofer, even though their audio connection to the bar is wireless.
- Keep the subwoofer where low-frequency energy is not blocked by cabinetry, then run Samsung’s available room-calibration features.
- Use the HDMI 2.1 inputs only when they fit your console-and-TV routing plan; otherwise connect sources to the TV and use the TV’s audio return path.
A narrow room, sofa against the back wall or open-plan space with no rear-satellite locations reduces the value of the included speakers. Measure the areas beside and behind the sofa before buying.

Set up Arc Ultra as a single bar or a staged system
- Place the 1,178 mm-wide bar centrally under the TV, leaving its acoustic openings clear.
- Connect its HDMI eARC output to the TV’s eARC port when you need the broadest listed audio-format support.
- In the Sonos system, enable the Speech Enhancement level, Night Sound or EQ setting that matches your listening, rather than changing several controls at once.
- Run Trueplay on a supported iOS or Android device after the bar is in its final position.
- If you later add a Sub and Era 300 rear speakers, reassess placement and run room tuning again so the expanded system is calibrated as a group.
This staged approach avoids storing unused rear speakers in a small room, but the eventual cost and number of components rise as you expand.
Price, availability and total value
| Price reference | What it means |
|---|---|
| Samsung HW-Q990H: $1,999.99 | Price shown on Samsung’s U.S. page checked October 13, 2026. That page showed delivery and in-store pickup as “Not Available” for the checked location, so it is not a universal stock statement. |
| Sonos Arc Ultra: $1,099 | Price listed on Sonos’ U.S. comparison page; prices and marketplace stock can change. |
| Arc Ultra launch context: £999 / $999 / AU$1,799 | Historical launch figures quoted by What Hi-Fi?, not current quotes. |
| Samsung UK review context: £1,299 | Price observed by What Hi-Fi? at the time of its July 2026 comparison, not a current global price. |
At the cited U.S. prices, Samsung costs substantially more at the point of purchase, but that price includes rear speakers and a subwoofer. Arc Ultra’s lower entry price covers only the bar. A fair comparison must include the cost of a Sonos Sub and Era 300 rear speakers if you want a similar physical layout; current prices for those additions are not stated in the cited material.
Because discounts, regional taxes, stock and model suffixes change, check the exact local listing immediately before ordering. Do not use the historical UK or launch prices to estimate what you will pay in another country.

Common pitfalls and fixes
Buying a channel number instead of a system
Do not treat 11.1.4 and 9.1.4 as equivalent performance ratings. Samsung’s number describes a package with physical rears and a subwoofer; Sonos’ number describes the Arc Ultra bar’s spatial processing. Compare the hardware in the room, not just the labels on the box.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Expecting wireless rears to need no power
The HW-Q990H rears are wireless for audio communication, but they still need power outlets. If you cannot provide those outlets behind the seating position, the system’s main advantage becomes difficult to use.

Connecting a console through a TV that cannot return the right format
Arc Ultra depends on the TV’s eARC route for certain formats and has no HDMI input. Verify eARC, available TV HDMI ports and 4K/120 Hz support before purchase. With Samsung, verify the entire HDMI 2.1 chain rather than assuming the bar alone guarantees 4K/120 Hz.
Skipping calibration
Run SpaceFit Sound Pro on the Samsung system and Trueplay on Arc Ultra after final placement. Room correction cannot compensate for a rear speaker hidden behind furniture or a bar placed off-center, so physical setup comes first.
Using dialogue modes as a substitute for better placement
Voice Enhancement, Sound Elevation and Speech Enhancement can improve intelligibility, but they do not repair a blocked bar, incorrect left-right rear placement or an unsuitable TV audio connection. Fix wiring and speaker position before raising enhancement levels.

The Samsung HW-Q990H is the better buy for a dedicated movie or gaming room: its included 4.0.2 rear speakers and subwoofer produce the more enveloping result reported in the July 2026 comparison, and its HDMI 2.1 inputs suit a console-heavy setup. Choose it only if your room can accommodate and power the extra speakers, and if its local price and availability make sense.
The Sonos Arc Ultra is the better fit for a living room where simplicity, music and future expansion matter more than maximum out-of-box immersion. It is easier to install as one bar, offers substantial dialogue and room-tuning controls, and can grow with a Sub and Era 300 rears. Its lack of HDMI input means your TV must handle source switching and eARC correctly.
