What the HW-Q990H controls are designed to do
The HW-Q990H is an 11.1.4-channel soundbar system with 23 speakers, according to Samsung’s 2026 product information. Its Samsung UK product page lists a 300W compact subwoofer. That hardware can produce substantial low-frequency energy, but the useful setting depends on the problem you are trying to solve: speech masking, excessive bass, uneven room response or disturbance at night.

Make dialogue easier to follow
1. Establish a repeatable reference
Choose a familiar film, series episode or broadcast with several kinds of speech: a normal conversation, a quiet scene and a scene with music or effects behind the actors. Set a comfortable volume before changing anything. The goal is to compare the same passages, not to judge a setting from a different program each time.

Voice Enhance is the most direct first experiment when words are being lost in the mix. Enable it, replay the reference passages and listen for whether consonants and low-volume lines become easier to follow without making voices unnaturally prominent. If the result is less comfortable, return to the previous setting; the control is intended as an option, not a required permanent preset.

3. Compare Adaptive Sound
Samsung describes Adaptive Sound as automatically adjusting audio to the content and says it is intended to keep voices clear even in quiet scenes. Compare the same passages with Adaptive Sound instead of Voice Enhance. A content-adaptive mode may be preferable when programs vary widely, while a more direct presentation may sound better when preserving the original mix matters more. The available Samsung material does not prove that Adaptive Sound is always clearer than Voice Enhance.
4. Treat Active Voice Amplifier Pro as a separate feature
The HW-Q990H also lists Active Voice Amplifier Pro. Its name should not be treated as a synonym for Voice Enhance. Check the current on-screen menu or user manual to see whether it is offered in your configuration, then test it on its own. Samsung’s published material reviewed for this guide does not verify that it can be combined with Voice Enhance or describe an identical processing path.

5. Keep the sound mode in the comparison
The system lists Standard, Surround Sound Expansion, Game Pro and Adaptive Sound. If speech changes unexpectedly, note which mode is active before comparing voice controls. Adaptive Sound is both a named sound mode and the content-matching option described by Samsung; the menu presentation can determine how it is selected on a particular setup. There is no controlled evidence here that one mode is best for every dialogue track.
Balance bass without losing the rest of the mix

SpaceFit Sound Pro is the logical first test when bass seems uneven or clarity changes around the room. Samsung says it adapts sound to the environment, including clarity and bass balance. Use Moderate Bass when the subwoofer is the disturbance
Samsung’s UK description gives Moderate Bass a specific behavior: it mutes the subwoofer while retaining bass produced by the soundbar itself. That makes it the most targeted first test when explosions, music or other low-frequency effects travel through floors or walls, particularly late at night. Turn it on, replay the same passage and decide whether the remaining sound has enough weight. If ordinary listening feels too restrained, turn it off again rather than compensating with several other controls at once.
Do not treat AI Dynamic Bass Control as a universal bass preset
AI Dynamic Bass Control is listed among the system’s features, but the supplied Samsung descriptions do not provide a fixed value that guarantees stronger, tighter or quieter bass in every room. Leave it unchanged while comparing SpaceFit Sound Pro and Moderate Bass so that you know which adjustment caused a change. If you later alter it, make that a separate experiment and use the same reference material.

Set up a quieter late-night configuration
Compare the two night-oriented controls independently
Moderate Bass and Night Mode address different documented functions and should not be assumed to be interchangeable. Moderate Bass specifically removes subwoofer output while preserving bass from the bar. Samsung confirms that Night Mode is available, but the reviewed product material does not explain its precise processing or how it interacts with Moderate Bass.
- Play a familiar scene at the lower volume you normally use at night.
- Listen with your normal settings and note whether the problem is mainly bass transmission, voices disappearing, or overall loudness.
- Enable Moderate Bass only and replay the scene.
- Return to the starting point, enable Night Mode only and replay the same scene.
- Keep the option that solves the actual disturbance with the least unwanted change. If your menu permits both, test the combination separately rather than assuming it is required.
Use the lowest comfortable volume after choosing a mode. No cited Samsung source supplies a measured decibel reduction, a guaranteed amount of bass attenuation or a universal night-listening outcome, so claims about how much quieter the system becomes would be unsupported.

- For night listening, compare Night Mode independently, then test a combination only if the menu allows it and you still need a change.

Finding the current menu instructions
The exact button-by-button sequence was not exposed in the official search material used for this guide. Samsung Support lists an English HW-Q990H user manual, version 2605200, modified 7 August 2026, along with firmware version 1071, modified 20 August 2026. Open the current on-screen soundbar menu and use the labels shown there; consult that current manual rather than relying on a remote sequence copied from an older model or another region.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Voices are still buried
- Replay the same dialogue passage with Voice Enhance and Adaptive Sound separately.
- Check whether a wide or game-oriented mode is changing the presentation before judging the voice control.
- If Active Voice Amplifier Pro appears, compare it on its own and verify its compatibility in the manual.
- If no option helps consistently, the limitation may be in the source mix rather than a single soundbar setting.
Bass is boomy or travels through the building
- Test Moderate Bass first to determine whether the subwoofer is responsible.
- Compare SpaceFit Sound Pro on and off from the normal listening position.
- Change only one bass-related control at a time; otherwise you cannot identify which adjustment altered the result.
Night Mode seems ineffective
- Confirm that it is actually enabled in the current menu and replay the same low-volume passage.
