Samsung Q990B vs Sonos Arc: what is included?
The central difference is the package you are buying. Samsung describes the HW-Q990B as an 11.1.4-channel system supplied with a subwoofer and rear speakers. Sonos Arc is one soundbar; its optional additions make it a different, expanded configuration. Samsung identifies the Q990B as a 2022 product generation, so confirm that the model and exact regional SKU are available where you shop.

Which is better for Dolby Atmos?
Both are Atmos-capable systems, but the setup differs. Samsung sells the Q990B with rear speakers and a subwoofer as part of its 11.1.4-channel package. Sonos Arc produces its sound from the bar’s eleven internal speakers, including two dedicated height channels; adding separate Sonos products changes the configuration and cost.

Neither a channel label nor an Atmos logo guarantees the same result in every room. The TV, source device, audio settings, content format, and speaker placement all affect what reaches the system. Samsung also advertises wireless Dolby Atmos transmission for selected 2022 Samsung TVs; this is not a universal wireless feature for all televisions. Samsung’s ordinary TV connection and the source chain still matter.
Does Sonos Arc need a subwoofer?
No: Arc is sold as a standalone soundbar and does not require a separate subwoofer to operate. A Sonos subwoofer is an optional expansion, as are Sonos surround speakers. That makes the standalone Arc a smaller initial setup, but it is not an equal hardware comparison with Samsung’s bundled Q990B. Compare the Arc alone with the Q990B package only if that difference reflects what you actually want; otherwise include the price and placement needs of any Sonos additions in your decision.

Will your TV and devices support the formats you want?
Check the full signal path, not just the soundbar’s format list. Samsung and Sonos both specify an HDMI ARC/eARC connection. Sonos lists eARC as necessary for certain formats, including Dolby TrueHD and some multichannel audio. A compatible source and content are also needed, and the TV must pass the format through its audio output.

- Check the TV’s audio passthrough settings and whether it can pass through the formats you use.
- Check the source device’s output settings and the audio format offered by the content.
- If your television has optical output only, Sonos lists an optical adapter for Arc; optical does not provide the same eARC connection.
Samsung’s wireless Atmos qualification is specifically for selected 2022 Samsung TVs. Do not assume another TV can transmit Atmos wirelessly to the Q990B.

Which setup suits your room and routine?
Choose the Q990B if you want the surround package included
The separate rear speakers and subwoofer are already part of Samsung’s described system, rather than upgrades you must assemble later. The trade-off is a larger installation: plan for the bar, rear-speaker locations, and access to power for the separate components. The bar is about 48.5 inches wide on Samsung’s regional material, so measure the available console space and verify the dimensions for your exact SKU.
Choose Arc if you want a soundbar you can expand
Arc is 44.96 inches wide and has no separate rear speakers in its standalone configuration. It may suit a room where you prefer to begin with one bar and add compatible Sonos components later. If you do expand it, assess the resulting system—not just Arc’s standalone specifications—against the included Q990B package.

What features matter beyond the speakers?
Samsung lists Q-Symphony, which pairs the soundbar with compatible Samsung TVs, and wireless Dolby Atmos transmission for selected 2022 Samsung televisions. These are compatibility-dependent features, not benefits to assume with any TV.

Is the Samsung Q990B worth it?
It can make sense if you want separate rear speakers and a subwoofer in one package and can accommodate them. Because it is a 2022-generation product, its value depends on the current price and availability of the exact regional model; those figures are not established here. Check local stock, included components, and the SKU before buying rather than treating it as Samsung’s latest model.
Arc is the more straightforward fit if you want a single bar now and value the option of adding Sonos components later. For a fair price comparison, include the cost of any additions needed to match the Q990B’s subwoofer-and-rear-speaker configuration. Verify current prices and offers at purchase time.
