What does it cost to replace the iPhone Duo’s matte layer?
Android Authority reported on October 2, 2026, that replacing the iPhone Duo’s matte cover layer costs $19 for customers with AppleCare+. The report says Apple had not disclosed a price for owners without AppleCare+, and the $19 figure has not been confirmed here by an Apple pricing or support page. It should therefore be read as a reported AppleCare+ price, not a standard price for every owner.
The report attributes confirmation that the layer is replaceable to Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of Hardware Engineering. That establishes replaceability, but not the official service process: the report does not specify whether owners can arrange the replacement themselves, where service is available, or what Apple charges outside AppleCare+. How Samsung’s US replacement offer compares
Samsung Electronics America’s US terms offer one no-charge inner-screen protector replacement within one year for eligible Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices and qualifying original purchasers. Later replacements are listed at $19.99 plus tax; the price may vary by location. The terms require service through Samsung or an authorized provider. On the first replacement, Samsung’s eligible customers pay nothing under the offer, while the reported AppleCare+ price is $19. After that, the supplied figures do not support a broader cost-of-ownership comparison: Apple’s later or out-of-coverage price is not stated, and Samsung’s offer is limited by its terms.
Is the layer the same as a screen repair?
No. The amounts concern protective layers on foldable displays, not replacement of the display assembly. Samsung’s $19.99-plus-tax price is explicitly for a subsequent protector replacement; it must not be treated as the price of repairing a cracked or failed screen. The Apple report likewise refers to the Duo’s matte cover layer, not a full-display repair.

Can you replace either protector yourself?
Samsung recommends authorized application for its foldable protector. Its support guidance says an authorized specialist should use appropriate equipment to align and apply it without damaging the display. Do not remove or install a Samsung foldable protector based on the pricing comparison alone.
The Apple report quotes Bergeron describing the Duo layer as something that can be peeled off and replaced. That statement does not establish an owner-performed procedure or provide steps, tools, or a compatible replacement part. It is not a DIY instruction. No compatible third-party Duo film or replacement kit is established by the cited material, and a generic matte screen protector should not be assumed to be the same layer.
