Samsung Gallery and Google Photos may show HDR images differently, depending on the photo, device, display and settings. Official documentation explains some of those differences, but does not provide a controlled, side-by-side color-accuracy test of the two apps.
To compare them fairly, open the same original file at full size in both apps on the same Galaxy device, with HDR support and relevant settings held constant. That is a practical comparison method—not a published benchmark. For ordinary SDR color, there is likewise no cited measurement establishing which app is closer to the original.

What does “more accurate” mean?
The answer depends on what you want the app to reproduce. Three different questions are easy to conflate:
- Faithful color: Do the displayed colors match a known reference? The available sources provide no measurements comparing Samsung Gallery and Google Photos on this point.
- HDR rendition: Does the app show the photo’s intended HDR brightness and contrast on a capable display? Google documents how its app handles Ultra HDR, but that does not establish how it compares with Samsung Gallery.
- Original-file preservation: Do backup and editing preserve the original file or its HDR properties? Documentation describes behaviors in Google Photos and Samsung Gallery sync, but file handling is not a color-accuracy test.
Camera processing is a separate issue: this comparison concerns how apps show a photo, not how a phone captured it.

Why can an HDR photo look brighter in one app?
Ultra HDR includes an SDR image and HDR instructions
Google Research describes Ultra HDR as an SDR image combined with a gain map and metadata. The gain map helps a compatible display produce an HDR rendition. Editing that changes the image without appropriately handling its gain map can change the resulting HDR appearance. Google’s account of its editing approach describes its own implementation, not a comparison with Samsung Gallery: Google Research’s explanation of HDR photo editing.
Google Photos grid thumbnails are SDR
Google Photos Help says that photos and videos in the main grid appear as SDR thumbnails. Open a photo rather than judging HDR from its grid preview. Whether the full HDR effect appears also depends on the device and screen. Google recommends a compatible device with a peak brightness of more than 1,000 nits for the best HDR viewing experience; this is general guidance, not a measured threshold for accuracy or a claim about Samsung Gallery. See Google Photos Help on HDR photos for Android.

Settings and edits can change what you see
Google says backed-up photos preserve HDR settings across backup-quality options. Its help page also notes that an edited HDR photo may be saved as SDR when, for example, the device or software is unsupported, a filter or export format is incompatible, HDR output is disabled, or markup is used. The same page says the enhanced HDR brightness control requires Android 16 or later. In Google Photos, an individual photo’s Ultra HDR slider is available, but it does not change the appearance when enhanced HDR brightness is turned off. These details are specific to Google’s documented Android behavior, and app or OS updates may affect current controls.
How to compare the apps fairly
- Choose one original file. Use the same image in both apps, not two edited or separately downloaded copies.
- Use the same device and screen. Compare on one Galaxy device so the display, screen settings and viewing conditions do not change between apps. Samsung notes that Gallery screens and settings can vary by model, software version and wireless provider; its Gallery support page describes the app and those variations.
- Open each photo full size. Do not compare Google Photos’ SDR grid thumbnail with a full-screen rendition in either app.
- Check HDR conditions. Confirm the file is an HDR image and that the device and settings support HDR viewing. If the comparison is about color rather than HDR brightness, use an SDR image or otherwise ensure HDR is not the changing variable.
- Keep edits out of the test. Compare the unedited original first. Filters, markup, exports and other edits may affect whether HDR is retained.
This method controls obvious differences; it does not turn a visual comparison into a calibrated color measurement. The cited documentation does not report a controlled test showing which app is closer to a reference image.

Do syncing and edits affect accuracy?
They can affect which copy you are viewing, even though they do not establish which app renders color more faithfully. Google’s documentation says Samsung Gallery sync can be limited to selected device folders. When a synced photo is edited in Samsung Gallery, the edit syncs to Samsung devices and Google Photos stores the edited version as a new photo; Google says the original is not separately stored in the cloud through this process. Google Photos also documents how editing, backup status, deleting or restoring photos, and using “Free up space” can affect copies and whether an image remains visible in the device’s Gallery.
Before comparing, check that both apps are showing the same version of the image. For the specific sync and copy behavior, consult Google Photos Help on syncing Samsung Gallery with a Google Account.
