Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync and Google Photos backup are separate controls, not two names for the same setting. With Gallery Cloud Sync enabled on an eligible Samsung device, selected photos and videos upload to the connected Google Account and are stored in Google Photos. Google Photos has its own backup setting for camera and other device folders. An image appearing in either app does not, by itself, prove that it has a cloud copy.
How Samsung Gallery sync differs from Google Photos backup
Gallery Cloud Sync starts from Samsung Gallery: it sends the selected media and folders from a compatible Samsung device to a linked personal Google Account. Google Photos backup starts in Google Photos and uses that app’s backup settings, including its separate selection of device folders. The two routes can overlap, but enabling one does not establish that the other is enabled.

| Question | Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync | Google Photos backup |
|---|---|---|
| What initiates upload? | The Gallery sync setting on an eligible Samsung device. | The Back up setting in Google Photos. |
| What is selected? | Selected albums or folders, potentially including the camera roll, Downloads, or Screenshots. The camera roll can be off while selected folders remain synced. | The camera roll and separately selected device folders, controlled in Google Photos. |
| Where is the cloud copy? | In the linked Google Account’s Google Photos storage. | In the Google Account used for Google Photos backup. |
| Does it use account storage? | Yes. Gallery-synced media is stored in original quality and uses Google Account storage. | Backed-up media uses Google Account storage; the available quality choices and their storage effects are described in Google’s backup-quality help. |
| Can it be affected by Gallery and Photos actions? | Yes. Deleting synced items in either app affects the synced copy; edits and folder moves have specific behavior explained below. | Yes. Deleting backed-up items or using Free up space affects cloud or local copies depending on the action. |
| Which Google Photos features see the media? | Google says Gallery-synced items can be viewed and shared, but do not automatically appear in some features such as Search and Memories unless they are also backed up through Google Photos. | Google Photos backup is the route needed for the cited features to include those items. |
Google’s Samsung-specific instructions state that Gallery Cloud Sync requires a compatible Samsung device, a personal Google Account, and Android 13 or newer. Availability may vary by model, account type, and region; check Google’s current Samsung Gallery sync instructions for eligibility and setup details.

Where your photos are stored—and how to check
A photo can be on the phone, in the Google Account cloud, or in both places. The Google Photos Android app can show device-only files, so seeing a photo in that app is not proof that it uploaded. Conversely, a backed-up cloud copy may remain available in Google Photos after the phone’s local copy is removed.

- Check the Google Account. In Google Photos, confirm that the signed-in account is the one where you expect the cloud copy.
- Check Google Photos backup. Review whether Back up is on and whether the relevant device folder is selected under Back up device folders.
- Check Gallery sync. In Samsung Gallery settings, inspect Sync photos and videos and the selected albums or folders.
- Check the item’s backup status. Use Google Photos’ status indicators rather than assuming that app visibility means upload. Google explains these checks in Check your backup and its guidance for finding lost photos and videos on Android.
Folders matter: Gallery can sync selected device folders even when its main camera roll is not selected, while Google Photos maintains its own device-folder selection. If an expected image is missing online, check both apps’ folder settings and the account before concluding that the image is lost.
What happens to storage and photo quality
Gallery-synced cloud media is stored in original quality and counts against the linked Google Account’s storage. Google’s backup-quality help says each Google Account comes with up to 15 GB of storage; the amount available to a particular account can depend on its current storage use and account arrangements. Check the account’s storage before enabling sync or changing backup settings.

Google Photos backup quality is a separate setting from Gallery Cloud Sync. Google describes the available quality behavior and storage accounting in Choose the backup quality of your photos and videos. Do not assume that changing Google Photos’ quality setting changes the original-quality behavior of media uploaded through Samsung’s Gallery sync.

Deleting a synced photo
For Gallery Cloud Sync items, deleting in Samsung Gallery or Google Photos removes the synced item from both apps and from cloud storage. An item sent to Google Photos trash can later be permanently deleted after the service’s retention period, so treat deletion as a cloud action as well as a local one.

Moving a photo to a private or Secure Folder
Moving a backed-up item into a Samsung private album deletes its Google Photos cloud copy after confirmation. Moving it into Secure Folder behaves differently: the move does not automatically remove the cloud copy. If the cloud copy should also be removed, delete it separately in Google Photos.
Using Free up space
Google Photos’ Free up space removes local copies that are already backed up. Those files may disappear from local Samsung Gallery albums but remain accessible in Google Photos and on the web. Confirm the backup status before using the feature, and decide whether you need the phone copy for offline access or local Gallery browsing.

How edits and turning sync off work
Edits
An edit made in Samsung Gallery syncs to other Samsung devices, but Google Photos stores that edit as a new photo; both the original and edited version may appear in Google Photos. In this Gallery-edit case, the unedited original stays on the Samsung device rather than being stored as a separate cloud original. An edit made on the web or another device appears in Google Photos but does not overwrite the Samsung phone’s original; you can review and apply out-of-sync changes. Deleting an original does not necessarily delete its edited copy, and deleting the edited copy does not necessarily delete the original.

Stopping uploads versus disconnecting the link
Turning off Gallery sync stops future uploads and removes cloud-media access in Samsung apps, but previously backed-up media remains in the Google Account and accessible through Google Photos. That toggle does not itself revoke the linked app or remove stored media. To end the Gallery app’s data sharing, remove Gallery Cloud Sync from the linked-app settings in the Google Account; this also does not delete previously backed-up items.

Before changing sync or deleting anything
- Verify the Google Account and backup status for the specific photo or video.
- Review folder and album selections in both Samsung Gallery and Google Photos; one app’s selection does not prove the other is syncing that folder.
- Check available Google Account storage before enabling uploads.
- Before deleting, moving to a private or Secure Folder, or freeing space, decide which copy should remain: local, cloud, or both.
- If you want to stop uploads, revoke the app link, or delete cloud media, use the distinct action for that goal; they are not interchangeable.
