Gallery Sync linked Samsung Gallery to OneDrive so the two views stayed aligned: historically, adding, editing or deleting a synced item in one service was reflected in the other. It was therefore a synchronization system, not a deletion-proof archive. Samsung ended Gallery Sync on September 30, 2026. Previously synced files remain in OneDrive, but they no longer appear in Samsung Gallery. To keep saving new pictures, use a separate workflow such as OneDrive Camera Backup or Google Photos backup, then verify how that service handles deletion and recovery.
What is the difference between Samsung Gallery Sync and photo backup?
Sync and backup solve different problems even when both place photographs in the cloud.

The distinction matters because a synced deletion can remove the cloud copy you expected to use as a backup. A backup workflow is safer only when it has completed uploads and its retention and deletion behavior fit your needs.
How Samsung Gallery Sync worked before it ended
Gallery Sync connected a Samsung account’s Gallery service with a Microsoft OneDrive account. After linking, the two services presented one managed collection rather than two intentionally independent copies. Samsung’s historical US setup material described choosing Gallery content to sync, while Samsung Hong Kong’s February 2026 explanation was more explicit about the two-way behavior: additions, edits and deletions made in either Gallery or OneDrive were applied to the other service.

That two-way design explains why the feature felt convenient. You could browse the same photographs on a phone and in OneDrive without manually exporting files. It also explains why calling it “backup” can be misleading. If a photo was deleted from the synchronized Gallery collection, the linked OneDrive item could be deleted as well. A cloud copy that mirrors local changes is not equivalent to an immutable or independently versioned archive.
Historical instructions are still visible in some search results and older help pages. Do not use them as proof that the feature is available now. Samsung’s current US support page says: “Sync with OneDrive is no longer available in your Gallery app because the feature is no longer supported.”
What changed on September 30, 2026?
Samsung ended Gallery Sync on September 30, 2026. The end date is stated in Samsung’s US, Australian and German notices, although menu wording and the exact notice shown can vary by country, carrier and software version.

- Previously synced files remain in the associated OneDrive account, according to Samsung’s discontinuation guidance.
- Those files are no longer displayed through the Samsung Gallery app after the service ended.
- OneDrive remains the place to find and download the originals.
- New photos taken after the shutdown are not added through Gallery Sync.
- Samsung identifies OneDrive Camera Backup as an ongoing upload option. Samsung Germany also lists Google Photos backup.
This is a change in the connection between apps, not an instruction to delete your OneDrive library. Keep the account and check its contents before removing anything from the phone.
Where did my Samsung Gallery photos go after OneDrive sync ended?
If photos disappeared from Gallery after September 30, look in OneDrive first. Samsung says previously synchronized files were retained there, even though the Gallery view no longer shows them. Sign in to the same OneDrive account that was linked to the Samsung phone; using a different Microsoft account can make a complete library look missing.

Find the library in the OneDrive app
- Open the OneDrive app and confirm the signed-in account, including the account name or email shown in the profile area.
- Open the folder or photo view that contained the former Gallery collection. The exact folder name can differ by account and by the organization created during the old link.
- Use OneDrive search for a known file name, date or location if the folder is not obvious.
- Open several older and newer items to confirm that you have found the expected library rather than an empty or newly created account.
Use the OneDrive website when the phone view is confusing
Sign in through a browser to the same Microsoft account and inspect the photo folders there. The website can make account switching easier to spot and can be more practical when a large collection must be reviewed before downloading.
How do I download old synced photos and videos?
Samsung’s US notice says you can download previously synced photos and videos through the OneDrive app or website. Samsung Australia’s September 29, 2026 notice specifically describes downloading individual photos or albums and warns that only originals that fit the device’s available storage can be downloaded.
Download selected items to a phone or tablet
- Open OneDrive and select the photo, video or album you want to keep locally.
- Choose the app’s download or save command. Labels can differ between Android versions and OneDrive releases.
- Wait for the download to finish on Wi-Fi or a reliable connection; a thumbnail alone does not prove that the original file is stored locally.
- Open Samsung Gallery or the device’s Files app and confirm that the downloaded file opens while the device is offline.
Download a large collection
Download in batches instead of selecting the entire library at once when phone storage is limited. Check free space first, especially for long videos and original-resolution files. Samsung’s notice does not promise that every item will fit; the device can receive only what its available storage permits.
If the phone cannot hold the library, download to a computer or another personal storage destination first. A portable external SSD can be used as an optional local copy, but choose its capacity from the size of your actual library and keep at least one additional copy if the photographs are irreplaceable. Samsung does not endorse a particular drive or capacity.
If I delete a photo from Gallery, does it delete from OneDrive too?
For the former Gallery Sync connection, Samsung’s regional documentation said yes. The February 26, 2026 Samsung Hong Kong support text described additions, edits and deletions as being applied in both Gallery and OneDrive. That statement describes the old linked service, not a promise about every current backup app.

After the shutdown, Samsung Gallery is no longer synchronizing new changes with OneDrive through Gallery Sync. If you delete a downloaded local copy now, that action is not the same as deleting the retained OneDrive item through the former link. However, deleting directly in OneDrive can still remove the cloud item, subject to OneDrive’s own trash and account rules. Treat the OneDrive library as the source you must verify before deleting anything.
Use the Recycle bin promptly
Samsung’s current US guidance says OneDrive’s Recycle bin retains deleted Gallery files for 93 days. That is a limited recovery window cited by Samsung for this situation, not a universal guarantee for every OneDrive account or region.
- Open OneDrive and select the account that held the synchronized files.
- Open Recycle bin from the account or storage menu.
- Find the deleted photo or video, select it and choose Restore.
- Return to the original folder and open the restored item.
- Download or copy it elsewhere before changing the folder again.
Restore promptly. Emptying the Recycle bin, allowing the retention period to expire or deleting the account’s only copy can remove this recovery route.
How can I get synced photos back into Samsung Gallery?
There is no post-shutdown switch that reconnects the old OneDrive collection to Gallery. The practical route is to download the files from OneDrive and save local copies in a folder that Gallery indexes.
- In OneDrive, download the selected photographs or videos to the phone.
- Open the Files app and locate the downloaded files. The download location can vary by Android and app version.
- Move or copy them into a media folder such as
DCIMorPictures, rather than leaving them buried in an app-specific folder. - Open Samsung Gallery and allow time for media scanning. If prompted, grant the requested photo and video permission.
- Check albums, dates and several full-resolution files. Gallery may group downloaded items by their embedded capture date rather than the download date.
- Keep the OneDrive originals until the local copies have opened successfully and you have another copy if the files matter.
Downloading does not recreate synchronization. A file placed back into Gallery will not automatically mirror edits or deletions to the old OneDrive relationship because that service has ended.

How can I keep backing up Samsung photos now?
Set up a separate upload workflow and verify it with a newly taken test photo. Samsung names OneDrive Camera Backup as the continuing OneDrive option; Samsung Germany also identifies Google Photos backup. These are separate app workflows, so their controls and deletion behavior should be evaluated independently.
OneDrive Camera Backup
- Install or open OneDrive and sign in to the account where you want new photos stored.
- Open the app’s camera-upload or camera-backup setting. The path and label can vary with the OneDrive version, Android release, country and carrier.
- Choose the device folders that should upload, such as the camera folder. Include other folders only if you intentionally want screenshots, messaging media or edited exports saved.
- Review Wi-Fi, mobile-data and battery options so uploads can finish under your normal conditions.
- Take a new test photo, wait for the upload indicator to complete and confirm that the item appears in OneDrive on another device or in a browser.
- Check what happens when you delete the local test photo. Do not infer the result from old Gallery Sync documentation; camera-backup deletion and restore rules belong to the current OneDrive workflow.
Google Photos backup
- Open Google Photos and sign in to the intended Google account.
- Open the backup setting and select the device folders you want included.
- Choose the upload quality and mobile-data behavior offered by the current app.
- Wait until the test photo shows as backed up, then verify it from the web or another signed-in device.
- Read the app’s current descriptions for device deletion, cloud deletion, trash and restore before using any “free up space” or delete command.
Neither option should be described as a universal winner from Samsung’s discontinuation notices alone. Storage allowances, pricing, account limits and deletion semantics can change and were not established in Samsung’s end-of-service material.
How to verify that a backup is really working
A backup icon or a visible thumbnail is not enough. Use this short acceptance check whenever you change accounts, phones or backup apps:
- Account: Record which OneDrive or Google account is receiving the files.
- Scope: Confirm that the camera folder and any additional folders you care about are enabled.
- Completion: Wait for the app to report that the test file is uploaded, not merely queued.
- Independent access: Open the file in a browser or on another device.
- Original quality: Download the test item and compare that it opens at the expected resolution and duration.
- Deletion behavior: Learn whether removing a local item, a cloud item or both affects the other copy.
- Recovery: Locate the provider’s trash or recycle area and note its stated retention period.
- Second copy: For irreplaceable work, maintain a separate local copy rather than relying on one synchronized account.
Common problems and the right response
“Gallery says the OneDrive feature is unavailable.”
That message is expected after September 30, 2026. Do not keep searching for the old Gallery Sync toggle or follow an archived setup page. Use OneDrive to access old files and configure a current camera-backup workflow for new media.
“OneDrive is empty, but I used Gallery Sync.”
Check the Microsoft account first, then search across folders and the website. A different account, a changed sign-in or an overlooked folder is more likely than the service having moved files to a new account. If an item was deleted, check Recycle bin within the applicable retention period.

“The download finished, but Gallery cannot see the file.”
Open it from Files, verify that it is a supported image or video, then copy it into DCIM or Pictures. Check Gallery’s photo permissions and allow media scanning to complete. An app-only download can remain outside the folders Gallery indexes.
“There is not enough space to download everything.”
Download in smaller batches, remove nonessential local files, or use a computer or optional external SSD as the initial destination. Samsung’s notice specifically makes available device storage a condition of downloading originals; do not assume a full-library download will fit on the phone.
“My new photos are not appearing in the cloud.”
Open the current backup app, confirm the correct account and enabled folders, and check whether uploads are paused for battery, network or storage reasons. Take a fresh test photo and wait for a completed-upload status before troubleshooting older files.

Samsung says settings and availability can vary by country, carrier and software version. Use the current support page for your region and the labels shown in your installed app. The end date and retained-file policy are consistent in Samsung’s notices, but the path to a setting may not be.

Do not confuse Gallery Sync with Samsung Cloud sync
Samsung’s general Samsung Cloud documentation covers synchronization of selected account and device data categories, with supported items varying by device and software. That is a separate setting from the former Gallery-to-OneDrive connection. Seeing a Samsung Cloud sync option does not mean your photographs are being uploaded to the old OneDrive Gallery location, and it does not restore Gallery Sync after its discontinuation.
The practical bottom line
Samsung Gallery Sync kept two services aligned; it was never a reliable promise that a deleted local photo would survive in the cloud. The service ended on September 30, 2026, so old synced media now lives in OneDrive rather than inside Samsung Gallery. Download the originals you need, use OneDrive Recycle bin quickly if something was deleted, and establish a separate camera-backup workflow for future photos. Confirm uploads and deletion behavior on your own account because regional support pages, app versions and service rules can differ.
