Fold or Flip: what is the practical difference?
The Fold is a book-style phone that opens into a larger, tablet-like screen. Its main advantage is the extra room for content and simultaneous apps. The Flip is a regular-sized smartphone when open that folds in half for a more compact shape. Its outer screen handles selected tasks, and its FlexMode can support hands-free framing. Samsung lists the Fold8 specifications and Flip8 specifications on their respective US product pages. The Fold8 price is $700 higher by subtraction of Samsung’s displayed starting prices. Configuration, retailer, carrier offers, trade-in value, and promotions can change what you actually pay.

Choose the Fold8 if the open screen will earn its keep
The Fold8’s 7.6-inch inner display gives more space for reading, watching video, using creative apps, and keeping multiple apps visible. It is the stronger fit when you expect to open the phone often and treat that larger display as a regular part of how you work or relax. If most of your use is on a conventional phone-sized screen, the Fold’s main advantage may matter less than its higher starting price and greater listed weight.
Do not assume the base Fold8 supports every feature associated with Samsung’s Fold line: Samsung says this model does not support S Pen or FlexMode. Its product page lists a 50 MP wide and 50 MP ultra-wide rear camera, along with 10 MP cover- and main-screen cameras; those specifications alone do not establish that its cameras are better than the Flip8’s.

Choose the Flip8 if compactness and FlexMode matter more
The Flip8 is the more compact folded option and is 21 g lighter than the Fold8 according to Samsung’s listed weights. Its 4.1-inch cover screen supports selected tasks such as checking messages, using widgets, and framing photos. Samsung promotes FlexCam and FlexMode for hands-free shooting, including using the cover screen to frame a shot from the rear camera. That makes the Flip a natural choice if you take selfies, record video, or want to set the phone down at an unusual angle without holding it.
Its 6.9-inch main display is still a large phone screen, but the Flip does not open into the Fold’s larger inner workspace. Choose it for a phone that folds smaller—not as a lower-cost substitute for the Fold’s tablet-like screen.

How to interpret the battery figures
Samsung lists typical battery capacities of 4,800 mAh for Fold8 and 4,300 mAh for Flip8, while claiming up to 26 hours and up to 31 hours of video playback, respectively. These are manufacturer figures, not a guaranteed runtime or a controlled comparison of everyday battery life. Capacity and advertised playback time alone are not enough to predict which phone will last longer for your mix of apps, network use, brightness, and other settings.

- Pick Fold8 if a large unfolded screen for reading, multitasking, or media is your top priority and its higher listed starting price is acceptable.
- Pick Flip8 if folding a phone into a compact shape, a lighter listed weight, and hands-free FlexMode shooting matter more.
- Compare current checkout offers rather than relying on starting prices if you plan to use a trade-in, carrier deal, or promotion.
Samsung’s older form-factor guide still contains Fold7 and Flip7 model-status language from when it was written; use it for the general design distinction, not as a current model list. Samsung’s US product pages reviewed here identify Fold8 and Flip8 as the models in this comparison.
