Choose Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 if you have a regular reason to use its unfolded 8-inch screen for tasks such as reading, editing, or viewing multiple apps at once—and that larger canvas is worth the higher, locally variable price and unanswered long-term durability questions. If you will mostly use one screen at a time, the conventional flagship is the simpler fit.
What is the practical difference?
The Fold8 is a phone that opens into a larger workspace: Samsung lists an 8-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display. The S26 Ultra has one conventional 6.9-inch display. Samsung U.K. describes the Fold series as bringing together “the portability of a smartphone and the versatility of a tablet.” That is the trade-off to consider: the Fold8 can give reading, editing, video, or two- and three-app multitasking more room, but only when you open it and use that space.

If the screen you carry is mainly for calls, messaging, browsing, photos, and occasional video, the S26 Ultra’s single display avoids the need to unfold a larger device to get a conventional phone experience. Samsung’s specifications are for models listed in its U.K. comparison; availability and specifications can differ by market.

Which phone lasts longer between charges?
Tom’s Guide reported 12 hours 19 minutes for the Fold8 and 16 hours 10 minutes for the S26 Ultra in its 2026 5G web-surfing battery test. These are results from one publication’s test, not promised screen-on time or a prediction for every user. Network conditions, brightness, apps, and usage can change what you see. Samsung lists typical battery capacities of 4,800 mAh for the Fold8 and 5,000 mAh for the S26 Ultra; those capacity figures do not by themselves establish runtime.
Which has the more useful cameras?
The S26 Ultra is the stronger choice on the listed rear-camera hardware if zoom flexibility matters: Samsung specifies a 200MP main camera and 50MP and 10MP telephoto cameras. For the standard Fold8, Samsung lists 50MP wide and ultrawide cameras, with no telephoto listed. Tom’s Guide’s review also notes the lack of a telephoto camera on the Fold8. A megapixel count is not a complete measure of image quality, but the S26 Ultra has more listed dedicated telephoto options for distant subjects.

Is the Fold8 easier to carry?
Samsung lists the Fold8 at 201 g and the S26 Ultra at 214 g, so the Fold8 weighs less. But when closed, it is listed as 9.7 mm thick, compared with 7.9 mm for the S26 Ultra. That means weight alone will not tell you which one feels more comfortable in a pocket or hand. If carry comfort is a deciding factor, handle both in person if possible.

The available information here does not establish a Fold8 long-term hinge or inner-screen failure rate, repair cost, or warranty outcome. That is not evidence that the phone is failure-prone; it means those outcomes should not be assumed from specifications or from reports about other generations. If repair exposure would change your decision, read the warranty and accidental-damage coverage terms for your country before buying.

How should price affect the choice?
Samsung Newsroom U.S. announced a $1,299.99 starting price for the S26 Ultra in 2026. Samsung’s August 6, 2026 Fold8 launch announcement said sales began August 7 in select markets, with rollout expanding globally, but did not provide U.S. Fold8 pricing. Do not use the older Fold7’s launch price as a stand-in. Check current local prices, storage configurations, promotions, and availability for both models before comparing their cost.

- Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want a conventional one-screen flagship, prioritize the listed telephoto camera flexibility, or value the stronger result in Tom’s Guide’s battery test.
- Choose the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you can name recurring tasks that benefit from opening an 8-inch screen—such as reading, editing, watching video, or keeping multiple apps visible—and that use justifies its cost and the durability uncertainties for you.
- Check the exact model if S Pen support, regional availability, or a particular configuration matters. Do not assume features from one Galaxy line or market apply to another.
Samsung reported that Fold8 pre-orders increased by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. That is Samsung’s company-reported figure, not independent evidence that the Fold suits more buyers.
