It also costs substantially more, weighs 215 g and lacks S Pen support. Tom’s Guide found a longer battery life than the standard Fold8 in its own test, but that result is not a guarantee of everyday runtime. The Ultra is the better fit if you will use its bigger screens and extra camera; otherwise, the standard Fold8 is the more sensible buy.
What’s new in the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?
Samsung announced the Fold8 Ultra on August 6, 2026, with sales starting in select markets the next day and a wider rollout planned. Samsung calls it the first Ultra model in its foldable portfolio. Availability and configurations vary by country.

The practical difference is a larger screen on both sides and a more versatile rear camera system. Samsung lists an 8-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display for the Ultra, versus 7.6 inches and 5.5 inches on the standard Fold8. The Ultra’s rear cameras are a 200 MP wide camera, 50 MP ultrawide and 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. Tom’s Guide’s comparison lists the standard Fold8 with a 50 MP wide camera and no telephoto. Megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality, but the telephoto gives the Ultra a dedicated optical zoom option the standard model lacks.
Samsung describes the Ultra as its slimmest Z Fold design yet, at 4.1 mm when unfolded and 215 g. Its launch announcement also specifies a 5,000 mAh battery and 45 W charging. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Tom’s Guide lists Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, IP48, 20 W wireless charging and storage configurations of 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB. It lists 12 GB RAM for the 256 GB and 512 GB models and 16 GB for the 1 TB model.

The premium buys a larger inner and cover screen, a higher-resolution main camera and a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera. It may be worthwhile if you regularly read, work or watch video on the open display, or use optical zoom often enough to value the extra lens. If you do not need those differences, paying more for the Ultra is difficult to justify on the evidence available here. What Hi-Fi? also characterizes it as more expensive than the standard Fold8, the previous Fold7 and Samsung’s non-folding S26 Ultra, reinforcing the need to decide first whether a foldable suits you at all.
What reviewers found in testing
Battery life and charging
In Tom’s Guide’s 5G web-browsing test at 150 nits, the Ultra ran for 14 hours 33 minutes. In the same outlet’s reported comparison, the standard Fold8 ran for 12 hours 19 minutes. Those results suggest the Ultra lasted longer under that test method; they do not predict how long it will last for every owner. Tom’s Guide also measured 76% charge after 30 minutes for the Ultra, compared with 70% for the standard Fold8.

Display brightness
Samsung gives the Ultra a 3,000-nit maximum brightness rating. Tom’s Guide measured a 2,687-nit peak in its own testing and praised the screen’s visibility and reduced reflections. The measurement is specific to that reviewer’s setup, not a universal result.
Camera, performance and design
Tom’s Guide’s overall verdict was positive, citing the display, performance, cameras and improved battery life. Its reservations included telephoto performance, minimal design changes and price. Those camera and design judgments are the reviewer’s assessment, not a specification. The extra lens expands the available camera options, but it does not by itself prove the Ultra will take better photos in every situation.

Drawbacks and buying details to check
- No S Pen: Tom’s Guide says the Ultra does not support the S Pen. If stylus input is central to your workflow, this model does not meet that need.
- Magnetic Qi2 charging needs a case: Tom’s Guide says Qi2 is supported, but magnetic wireless charging requires a case.
- Check exact case compatibility: A Fold7 case did not fit the Ultra, according to the review. Choose a case that explicitly names the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra rather than assuming an older foldable’s accessory will work.
- Confirm protection fits each screen: The device has both a cover and inner display. Check that any screen protector is intended for the exact screen and model; compatibility for a particular accessory is not established here.
Who should choose the Ultra?
Choose the Ultra if…

- You are comfortable with the higher price and 215 g weight.
Choose the standard Fold8 if…
- You prefer its smaller displays or do not need the Ultra’s larger viewing area.

- You want to avoid the Ultra’s price premium and do not need its particular upgrades.
