Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Review: Does Its Wider Foldable Design Strike Gold?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is a premium foldable whose strongest case is its shape: a 5.5-inch cover screen and a near-4:3, 7.6-inch inner display make it a particularly inviting option for reading, browsing and working with documents. That same layout means more letterboxing for widescreen video, and its premium price, sunlight readability and still-unknown long-term reliability are important considerations. It is a good fit if you want a compact phone that opens into a wider workspace—not an automatic upgrade for every flagship buyer.

What is different about the Galaxy Z Fold8’s shape?

The Fold8 uses a passport-like, wider-and-shorter layout rather than prioritising a tall, narrow inner screen. Samsung describes the 5.5-inch cover display as suited to quick interactions and the unfolded 7.6-inch display for viewing, reading and gaming. The inner screen is close to a 4:3 ratio, while the cover screen is near 16:10.

HardwareZone reviewer Liu Hongzuo says the cover display’s proportions feel familiar from laptop and desktop screens and leave room for comfortable typing. TechRadar likewise found one-handed app use on the cover screen practical. These are reviewer impressions, not guarantees that every user will find the device easy to handle one-handed.

Samsung lists the standard Fold8 at 201 g and calls it the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. That is a manufacturer specification and comparison claim, not an independent comparative test.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Is the Fold8 better for reading or watching videos?

Reading, browsing and documents

The wider inner display gives text and documents a less tall, more page-like canvas than a typical phone screen. HardwareZone and TechRadar both highlight reading as a strength; TechRadar also praises the larger display for document work. One UI 9 refinements, including Bixby voice commands for settings and improved app continuity, are among HardwareZone’s reviewer-noted software strengths.

Widescreen video

A near-4:3 screen does not match 16:9 video, so widescreen content leaves more letterboxing than it would on a more elongated display. HardwareZone notes that some viewers may enjoy the more cinema-like presentation, but whether the unused screen area feels distracting is a matter of preference. If filling the display with widescreen video is your priority, the Fold8’s proportions are a trade-off rather than an unqualified benefit.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • Direct sunlight: TechRadar’s reviewer reported that the screen could remain difficult to read in direct sunlight despite its stated peak-brightness rating. This is that reviewer’s experience, not a universal measurement.
  • Crease visibility: TechRadar found the crease minimally distracting in ordinary viewing, though it could show when it caught the light.
  • Durability evidence: TechRadar lists IP48 resistance, Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the display, Victus 2 on the back and a Flex Titanium layer beneath the main display. These specifications do not establish that the phone is dustproof or prove long-term hinge and inner-display reliability. No verified long-term failure-rate data is established here.

How much does the Galaxy Z Fold8 cost?

Launch prices reported by TechRadar and HardwareZone vary by market and storage. Treat these as review-reported launch pricing, not a guarantee of today’s retail price; discounts and inventory can change. Select the right region and storage tier when checking a listing, and make sure it is the standard Fold8 rather than the Fold8 Ultra.

Market 256GB 512GB 1TB Source context
United States US$1,899.99 US$2,099.99 US$2,499.99 TechRadar-reported launch prices
United Kingdom £1,699 £1,869 £2,209 TechRadar-reported launch prices
Australia AU$2,699 AU$2,999 AU$3,599 TechRadar-reported launch prices
Singapore S$2,498 S$2,798 S$3,398 HardwareZone-reported official prices; Singapore retail start was August 14, 2026. The 256GB and 512GB models have 12GB RAM; the 1TB model has 16GB RAM.

Should you buy the Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra?

Choose between them by deciding whether you want the standard Fold8’s wider, shorter layout or the Ultra’s larger workspace, then weigh camera system, battery capacity, dimensions, weight and local storage-tier pricing. Samsung describes the Fold8 Ultra as having an 8-inch main display, an upgraded camera system and a 5,000 mAh battery. The available information does not establish a comparable battery-life winner, so capacity alone should not be treated as proof of longer use between charges.

When did the Fold8 launch?

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8 and its new foldable lineup on August 5, 2026, saying sales would begin August 7 in select markets and expand globally. HardwareZone reports a Singapore retail start of August 14, 2026. Samsung also said pre-orders for the new Galaxy Z lineup increased by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. That is Samsung’s company-reported figure for the lineup, not an independent result or a Fold8-only sales number.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 worth it?

The Fold8 makes the most sense for someone who will regularly use the inner display for reading, browsing or documents and prefers a wider, page-like screen to a tall, narrow foldable. It is harder to recommend on shape alone if your priorities are uninterrupted 16:9 video, reliable readability in direct sun, a lower purchase price or proven long-term hinge and display durability. HardwareZone’s reviewer concluded, “The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is why design matters”; whether that design is worth paying for depends on how often its screen proportions suit your everyday use.
