For most Galaxy Z Flip7 owners, the Galaxy Z Flip8 is a refinement rather than a must-have annual upgrade. Both phones retain the same 6.9-inch inner display, 4.1-inch cover display, rear and front camera resolutions, 4,300mAh battery and up-to-25W wired charging. Flip8 is thinner, lighter, faster in tested configurations and adds cover-screen software improvements. It makes more sense for a first-time Flip buyer, someone replacing an older model, or a Flip7 owner whose priorities are performance, portability or the newer FlexWindow experience.
The short answer: who should buy which phone?
The right choice depends less on the model number than on your current phone, local price and the processor sold in your country. A Flip7 owner should normally keep the existing phone unless a trade-in makes the net cost unusually low or a specific Flip8 improvement solves a real problem. A new buyer planning to keep the phone for several years should generally favor Flip8 when the price difference is acceptable, because it starts with the newer processor, software generation and slimmer design.

| Reader situation | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Already own Galaxy Z Flip7 | Usually keep it | Display sizes, camera hardware, battery capacity and charging are essentially unchanged. Upgrade only for a meaningful trade-in, faster performance, lighter body or new cover-screen functions. |
| Buying your first Flip | Prefer Flip8 if the price gap is acceptable | It is the newer platform, has the slimmer and lighter chassis, and begins with a later Android and One UI release. Verify the local chipset before buying. |
| Camera hardware is your priority | Do not expect a major generational jump | Samsung lists the same 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP front cameras on both generations. Flip8 adds software tools rather than new sensors. |
| Longest possible battery life | Compare real prices, not the model name | Both have a 4,300mAh battery and up to 25W wired charging. Independent testing found only a modest endurance advantage for Flip8. |
| Lowest purchase price | Check current local Flip7 offers | Launch prices are historical. A discounted Flip7 can be the better value if its condition, storage and warranty are acceptable. |
Make the decision on four numbers and one practical question: your net price after discounts and trade-in, the storage capacity, the processor in your market, the weight and thickness you will carry every day, and whether the new cover-screen features matter to your routine.

What changes in the Galaxy Z Flip8?
A slimmer, lighter body
Samsung Germany’s 2026 comparison lists Galaxy Z Flip8 at 180g, compared with 188g for Flip7. Unfolded thickness falls from 6.5mm to 6.1mm, while folded thickness falls from 13.7mm to 13.1mm. That is an 8g reduction and 0.6mm reduction when folded. The difference is measurable but not transformational: it may be noticeable in a pocket or small bag, yet it does not turn the Flip into a fundamentally different-size phone.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
TechRadar’s hands-on report says the revised hinge feels easier to open and close. That is an editorial observation of its units, not a quantified durability test. The hinge refinement is therefore best treated as a daily-comfort improvement rather than proof of a specific lifespan or failure rate.
Same display dimensions
Both generations use a 6.9-inch main display and a 4.1-inch cover display according to Samsung’s comparison. If you are hoping for a larger outer screen, a larger inner panel or a different aspect ratio, Flip8 does not provide that change. Existing Flip7 accessories and habits built around those screen sizes remain familiar, although case fit should still be confirmed because the chassis and hinge dimensions changed.
Same camera resolutions, newer camera software
The listed hardware is unchanged: a 50MP main rear camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 10MP front camera on both phones. That continuity means Flip8 should not be bought on the assumption that it has a new sensor system or an automatic leap in image quality.
TechRadar describes Flip8 features including Camcorder Grip and Super Steady Horizontal Lock. These are software and capture-mode additions that can change how you hold or stabilize video. They are useful if you record video frequently, but they do not alter the underlying camera resolutions. Image quality will also depend on processing, lighting, firmware and the regional device configuration.
Processor differences depend on your country
There is no single worldwide Flip8 chipset specification. Samsung Germany lists Exynos 2600 for Flip8 and Exynos 2500 for Flip7. TechRadar reports Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in US and Australian Flip8 models, while the UK model uses Exynos 2600; it also identifies Exynos 2500 for Flip7. Check the model number and technical specification for the country where you will buy before using any benchmark or performance claim.

That geographic split matters for sustained gaming, emulation, AI workloads, heat and battery behavior. A review of a US Snapdragon model cannot be treated as a guaranteed result for a UK or German Exynos model. It also means that two buyers comparing the same model name may receive different performance characteristics.
Published benchmark results
Tom’s Guide measured its tested Galaxy Z Flip8 at 3,627 single-core and 11,215 multi-core in Geekbench 6. Its tested Flip7 scored 2,286 single-core and 8,079 multi-core. In 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited, Flip8 scored 29,723 with an average of 177.9 frames per second, while Flip7 scored 19,144 and 114.64 frames per second.

Battery capacity is unchanged, but charging is slightly quicker
Samsung lists a 4,300mAh battery in both models and up to 25W wired charging in each. Capacity is therefore not an upgrade criterion. If Flip7 already lasts long enough for you, Flip8 does not add extra battery reserve on paper.
Under Samsung Germany’s stated conditions, Flip8 reaches up to 55% charge in around 30 minutes, compared with up to 50% for Flip7. Samsung lists full wired charging times of up to 79 minutes for Flip8 and 87 minutes for Flip7. These are manufacturer figures under the company’s test conditions; charger, cable, temperature, battery level and regional accessories can affect actual results.

Samsung lists up to 31 hours of video playback for each generation. Tom’s Guide recorded an average 12 hours and 5 minutes for Flip8 in its battery-drain test, less than half an hour ahead of Flip7. That independent result indicates a modest endurance improvement rather than a new all-day category. Your result will vary with brightness, cellular signal, refresh rate, gaming, camera use and background applications.

FlexWindow changes
TechRadar reports that Flip8’s cover-screen software adds a FlexWindow app tray and lets you rearrange widgets. These changes make the outer display more useful for quick actions without opening the phone. They are most valuable if you frequently reply to short messages, check information or launch supported actions from the closed phone.
The feature set is a software distinction, not a larger panel: both phones still have a 4.1-inch cover display. Check which applications and functions are supported in your country and current software build, because Samsung can change availability through updates.
Android and One UI versions
Samsung Germany lists Flip8 launching with Android 17 and One UI 9, while Flip7 launched with Android 16 and One UI 8. TechRadar reports seven generations of Android upgrades for both generations, with Flip8 beginning one Android version later. Consequently, Flip8 should have a later starting point in its support timeline, but the exact rollout schedule can vary by market, carrier and software approval.
Do not assume that a feature shown on a launch unit is immediately available in every country. Confirm the current update history and regional feature list if a particular Galaxy AI or cover-screen function is essential to you.

Launch prices versus the price you should pay now
TechRadar reported the following launch prices. They are historical reference points, not live quotes, and regional promotions can change the value calculation.
| Storage | Galaxy Z Flip8 launch price | Galaxy Z Flip7 launch price | Reported difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB (US) | $1,199.99 | $1,099 | $100 more for Flip8 |
| 256GB (UK) | £1,149 | £1,049 | £100 more for Flip8 |
| 256GB (Australia) | AU$1,949 | AU$1,799 | AU$150 more for Flip8 |
| 512GB (US) | $1,399.99 | $1,219 | $180 more for Flip8 |
| 512GB (UK) | £1,319 | £1,149 | £170 more for Flip8 |
| 512GB (Australia) | AU$2,249 | AU$1,999 | AU$250 more for Flip8 |
The current net price is more useful than any launch-price comparison. Before ordering, check the unlocked price, carrier conditions, storage tier, trade-in value, taxes, warranty region and whether the older model is new, refurbished or used. A Flip7 that is meaningfully cheaper can offer the same screen sizes, camera resolutions, battery capacity and charging speed. A small net difference may justify Flip8’s newer processor and longer remaining support window.

You need faster performance
Choose Flip8 if your Flip7 feels slow during demanding games, multitasking, video editing or AI features and the local Flip8 uses the faster chipset you expect. The Tom’s Guide results show why the processor can be the largest generational change. Verify that your regional model matches the tested configuration before relying on those numbers.
You care about every gram and millimeter
Flip8’s 180g weight and 13.1mm folded thickness are useful if you carry the phone all day, use tight pockets or want a less bulky folded device. The improvement is incremental, so hold both models or compare their cases if portability is your deciding factor.

You can secure an unusually favorable trade-in
A trade-in can change the recommendation because it lowers the actual cost of moving from Flip7 to Flip8. Calculate the final amount after trade-in, promotional credit, taxes and required plan payments. Offers are market-specific and can expire; do not treat an advertised benefit in one country as universal.
When keeping Flip7 is the better decision
- Your Flip7 already provides sufficient speed and battery life.
- You expected a larger display, a larger cover screen or new camera sensors; neither generation changes those core specifications.
- The local Flip8 costs substantially more after discounts and trade-in.
- You are satisfied with the Flip7 hinge, thickness and cover-screen workflow.
- You mainly want longer battery endurance: both phones have a 4,300mAh battery, and independent testing found only a modest Flip8 advantage.
Keeping Flip7 also avoids migrating data, replacing accessories and accepting the uncertainty of a new regional chipset. A battery replacement or software reset may solve a specific Flip7 problem for less money than a new phone, although repair pricing and availability vary by market.
Buying Flip8 as a first-time Flip owner
For a first purchase, Flip8’s advantages accumulate over the years: a newer processor, later launch software, a lighter chassis and updated cover-screen controls. The unchanged camera and battery specifications are less concerning when there is no Flip7 to replace. Choose the storage tier based on how long you keep phones and how much video you record; do not pay for 512GB automatically if your usage fits 256GB.

Checklist before you order
- Confirm the regional processor. Look up the exact model sold by your retailer. US and Australian reports identify Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, while UK and German information identifies Exynos 2600.
- Compare the final price. Include tax, delivery, carrier installments, trade-in credit and storage.
- Verify warranty coverage. Imported units can have different service terms, eSIM support or repair eligibility.
- Check software availability. Confirm that the FlexWindow functions, Galaxy AI tools and Android update schedule apply to your country and carrier.
- Choose protection deliberately. A foldable hinge and flexible display have different repair considerations from a conventional phone. Optional protection plans vary by market, price and provider; read the local terms rather than assuming identical coverage.
- Compare accessories by fit. The thinner chassis and revised hinge mean a Flip7 case may not fit Flip8 correctly.
How the two phones compare by priority
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Highest benchmark performance | Flip8, subject to local chipset | Tom’s Guide recorded materially higher Geekbench 6 and 3DMark results on its Flip8 unit. |
| Smallest folded footprint | Flip8 | 13.1mm folded and 180g versus 13.7mm and 188g for Flip7 in Samsung Germany’s figures. |
| Largest screen | Tie | Both list a 6.9-inch inner display and 4.1-inch cover display. |
| Camera sensor hardware | Tie | Both list 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP front cameras. |
| Battery capacity | Tie | Both list 4,300mAh. |
| Fastest wired charging specification | Tie | Both support up to 25W; Samsung reports somewhat shorter Flip8 charge times under its conditions. |
| Lowest likely purchase price | Flip7 | It is the older generation and may be discounted, but check current local offers rather than assuming a discount. |
| Latest starting software | Flip8 | Samsung Germany lists Android 17/One UI 9 for Flip8 and Android 16/One UI 8 for Flip7 at launch. |
Verdict
Galaxy Z Flip8 is the stronger new purchase when its local price is reasonable and you value the newer processor, lighter body or cover-screen refinements. It is not a dramatic hardware overhaul: the displays, camera resolutions, battery capacity and maximum wired charging remain the same. For a satisfied Flip7 owner, wait unless a concrete performance, portability or FlexWindow need—and a favorable net price—justifies the change. The model name alone is not enough; confirm the regional chipset and calculate the price you will actually pay.
