The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 is the current model in Samsung’s Z Flip line as of October 2026. It is a compact clamshell with a 6.9-inch folding main display, a 4.1-inch cover screen, and a published 4,300 mAh battery. The details below come from Samsung’s own launch announcement, its Australia product guide, and its Ireland model comparison page. None of it reflects independent testing or hands-on use, and specifications, chipsets and software features can differ by country.
Launch timeline and availability
The Flip8 went through three separate milestones, and they are easy to confuse:

- July 22, 2026: Samsung launched the Flip8 at Galaxy Unpacked, according to its Australia product guide.
- August 6, 2026: Samsung’s global newsroom announced the Flip8 and other new Galaxy Z products, saying they would be sold through carriers, retailers, Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores.
- August 7, 2026: Sales began in select markets, with a global rollout to follow.
Because the rollout is staged, the phone may be listed in one country and not yet in another. Check your local Samsung site before planning a purchase.

Samsung’s Australia guide lists the Flip8 at 180 g, measuring 6.1 mm unfolded and 13.1 mm folded. The main display is a 6.9-inch AMOLED panel. Samsung describes the design as built for quick, personal interaction, and most of that interaction happens on the outside of the phone.

The FlexWindow cover screen
The 4.1-inch cover screen, which Samsung calls the FlexWindow, is meant to handle everyday tasks without opening the phone. Samsung lists these uses:
- Widgets and alerts
- Music playback control
- Camera previews
- Selected apps
- Now Brief, Samsung’s summary feature, and Gemini access, both highlighted in Samsung’s global launch release
Which apps and widgets work on the cover screen depends on the app developer and the software version, so check the support list on your own device after setup.

Camera system
Samsung lists a 50 MP main camera that is also used for FlexCam, a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10 MP front camera. Its Flip8 camera tools include:

Samsung’s Flip8 materials also mention new image-processing features. These are not a higher megapixel count; the 50 MP main-camera figure is the same resolution Samsung lists for the Flip8’s main sensor in its comparison. Image quality is not assessed in this article.

Software and AI features
Samsung’s Australia guide lists One UI 9 running on Android 17. Its listed features include Now Brief, live translation, smart replies, writing help, photo editing and cover-screen widgets. Samsung notes that feature availability may vary by country, software version and supported apps, so treat this list as what Samsung advertises rather than what every buyer will see.
Performance, battery and connectivity
The processor depends on where you buy. Samsung Australia lists the Exynos 2600 in select markets and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in others. Do not assume one chipset applies everywhere.

- Memory: 12 GB, with 256 GB or 512 GB of storage.
- Battery: 4,300 mAh. This is a published capacity, not a measured battery-life result.
- Charging: 25W wired fast charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
- Connectivity: 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, NFC and USB Type-C.
Durability: what the IP48 rating does and does not mean
Samsung’s guide lists an IP48 rating with a test footnote. The basis for the rating is freshwater submersion up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes, plus protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm. Samsung advises against beach or pool use and says the charging port should be dry before you charge. The rating does not mean the phone is waterproof or damage-proof.
Samsung’s Ireland comparison describes an Advanced Armour Aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, and notes that models vary by country. On the fold, Samsung says the hinge is smoother and the crease less visible. These are subjective manufacturer claims, and Samsung itself notes that crease visibility changes with viewing angle and lighting.

How the Flip8 compares with Flip7, Flip6 and Flip5

Is the Flip8 worth upgrading to?
Samsung’s own FAQ asks whether the Flip8 is worth upgrading from an older phone. Samsung’s material cannot answer that for you, but the listed differences point to a few clear questions:
- Coming from Flip5 or Flip6: the listed differences are the larger main and cover screens and the lower weight. Battery, chipset and software are not stated for those models in the sources, so compare them directly on Samsung’s local product page.
- Coming from Flip7: Samsung’s listed differences are the chipset, the software version (One UI 9 against One UI 8.0), and its claims about the hinge and crease. Battery capacity is the same.
- Relying on cover-screen tasks: if you mainly use widgets, music controls or camera previews without opening the phone, the FlexWindow features are the part of the Flip8 most worth checking on a demo unit.
- Needing water resistance: the IP48 rating is limited to the conditions described above. If you need protection for pools or beaches, the Flip8 is not the right fit.
Pre-order demand
Samsung’s August 6, 2026 newsroom announcement says pre-orders for the new Galaxy Z series rose by more than 30% compared with the previous generation. This is a company-reported comparison for the Galaxy Z series as a whole. It has not been independently audited, and it is not a figure for the Flip8 alone.
