Short answer: the Galaxy Z Flip8 is the better buy when you want a thinner, lighter phone, a revised hinge and the newer One UI 9 cover-screen features. The Galaxy Z Flip7 is the smarter choice when its local discount is substantial, because both phones have the same-size displays, the same 4,300 mAh battery rating and broadly similar basic design. The Flip8 is an evolution, not a complete redesign, and an independent battery test did not show a runtime advantage.

Galaxy Z Flip7 vs Z Flip8 at a glance

Samsung’s two compact foldables share the central experience: a 6.9-inch foldable main display, a 4.1-inch cover display, a clamshell design, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. The Flip8’s improvements are concentrated in the body, hinge, processor options and cover-screen software rather than screen size.

What is physically different?

Flip8 is thinner and lighter

Samsung Australia lists the Galaxy Z Flip8 at 180 g and 6.1 mm thick when unfolded. Samsung’s Singapore comparison lists the Flip7 at 6.5 mm unfolded, while TechRadar reports folded measurements of 13.1 mm for Flip8 and 13.7 mm for Flip7. TechRadar also describes the Flip8 as eight grams lighter.

Those changes will not transform the phone into a different class of device, but they address two persistent foldable-phone compromises: bulk in a pocket and weight in one hand. The improvement matters most if you carry the phone all day, use a case, or find the Flip7’s folded shape conspicuous in tighter pockets. If you already own a Flip7, the difference alone is unlikely to justify an upgrade at full price.

The hinge is revised, not replaced by a new form factor

Samsung describes the Flip8 hinge as smoother and stronger and says its refinements reduce the visible crease. TechRadar’s hands-on comparison says the revised hinge felt easier to open and close. These are meaningful quality-of-life changes, but they remain manufacturer claims and a hands-on impression rather than a quantified durability test.

The Flip8 still opens into the same type of vertical clamshell phone. You do not get a larger outer display, a different folding orientation or a new screen ratio. The practical reason to choose it is a more polished mechanism and thinner chassis, not a fundamentally new way to use a foldable.

Both phones have the same-size screens

6.9-inch inner display

Samsung lists a 6.9-inch AMOLED main screen for the Flip8, and its comparison page says the Flip7 has the same dimension. The newer model therefore does not provide more room for reading, video or multitasking. Your decision should focus on the physical refinements and software rather than expecting a larger canvas.

4.1-inch FlexWindow

The cover display is also 4.1 inches on both generations. Notifications, quick replies, widgets and camera previews occupy the same basic hardware area. One UI 9 changes what Samsung lets you do there, but it does not enlarge the panel.

This distinction is important when comparing discounted Flip7 listings. A cheaper Flip7 does not give up screen size. It gives up the Flip8’s newer software behavior and hardware refinements.

Processor choice depends on your country

There is no single worldwide Flip8 chipset. Samsung Australia’s guide lists the Exynos 2600, built on a 2 nm process, in select markets and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in others. The processor inside a particular retail unit therefore depends on its country or carrier version.

Before buying an imported phone, confirm the model number and processor for the destination market. Do not assume that an overseas Flip8 has the same modem bands, eSIM behavior, warranty coverage or performance characteristics as a local unit. Samsung’s regional product page and the listing’s full model number are more reliable than a generic name in a marketplace headline.

The available information does not establish a universal benchmark winner between every Flip8 regional variant and every Flip7 configuration. It is safe to say that Flip8 uses a newer platform, but not to promise a particular percentage improvement in speed, graphics or battery efficiency. Samsung says the newer chip can improve efficiency; that is the company’s claim, not proof that every owner will get longer battery life.

One UI 9 makes the cover screen more useful

The most visible software difference is One UI 9 on the Flip8. Samsung says the cover screen can access an apps tray, customizable widgets, alerts, music controls and selfie framing. This lets you perform more actions without opening the phone.

What that changes in daily use

  • Apps tray: you can reach supported apps from the closed phone instead of opening it for every task.
  • Widgets: information and controls can be arranged to your preference on the FlexWindow.
  • Alerts and music: notifications and playback controls are available at a glance.
  • Selfie framing: the cover display helps compose shots when the main cameras face you.

These are usage and interface improvements, not a larger cover panel. The value depends on how often you prefer to keep the phone closed. If you mostly open your phone for messages, social apps and navigation anyway, the difference may feel minor. If you use a foldable specifically to reduce screen time and quick interactions, the Flip8’s cover-screen tools are more compelling.

Samsung has not established that every Flip7 feature will behave identically after software updates. Check the update policy and the exact One UI version offered for your region before assuming that a Flip7 will receive every Flip8 cover-screen function.

Camera changes are mainly processing features

Samsung advertises improved camera processing on the Flip8, including AI-powered bokeh, Super Steady with 360-degree horizon detection and Photo Assist. These features can affect portrait rendering, stabilized video and editing workflows.

The available comparisons do not establish a general camera-sensor upgrade over the Flip7. Treat the Flip8’s camera advantage as software and processing capability rather than proof of a new sensor system or categorically better image quality in every scene. If photography is your priority, compare sample images from the exact regional models and software versions you intend to buy.

The cover-screen selfie framing feature is a practical benefit of the Flip8 interface: you can use the phone’s main cameras while viewing the composition on the outside display. It does not change the physical display size shared by both generations.

Battery life: do not buy the Flip8 expecting a clear endurance win

Both phones are listed with a 4,300 mAh battery and 25 W wired charging, along with wireless and reverse wireless charging. The capacity and listed wired charging rate therefore do not favor the newer model.

In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, the Flip8 lasted 12 hours 5 minutes, while the Flip7 lasted 12 hours 24 minutes under the same review’s test conditions. That is a 19-minute advantage for Flip7 in that test, not a guarantee of personal battery life. Brightness, cellular reception, processor variant, refresh-rate behavior, camera use, gaming, temperature and background apps can all change results.

The result also means Samsung’s efficiency claim should be interpreted carefully. A newer processor may improve efficiency in particular workloads without producing longer overall runtime in an independent mixed-use test. Choose the Flip8 for its body, hinge and software; choose neither model solely on the assumption that the Flip8 lasts longer.

Storage and memory choices

Samsung Australia’s Flip8 guide lists 12 GB of memory and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. Samsung’s US announcement for the Flip7 included 256 GB and 512 GB versions. Exact availability can differ by country, carrier and color.

Who should choose 256 GB? Who should choose 512 GB?
People who stream most media, use cloud photo backup and do not keep large games or long 4K videos locally. People who record substantial video, keep large offline media libraries, install many games or plan to keep the phone for several years.

Neither phone’s listed storage is expandable in the supplied specifications. Verify the local model before ordering, especially when a marketplace listing uses a generic “Flip8” title but does not state storage or regional model details.

Price and value: compare today’s local deal, not launch MSRP

Samsung’s US July 2025 announcement listed the Galaxy Z Flip7 at $1,099.99 for 256 GB. Tom’s Guide reported US Flip8 launch pricing of $1,199 for 256 GB and $1,399 for 512 GB. At the comparable 256 GB capacity, the launch-price difference was $99.01.

Those figures are historical US launch prices. They do not establish what either phone costs now, and they should not be converted into a worldwide recommendation. A discounted Flip7 can be the better value if the saving is large enough to outweigh the Flip8’s thinner body, hinge changes and One UI 9 features.

Compare the deal this way

  1. Match storage capacity first: compare 256 GB with 256 GB or 512 GB with 512 GB.
  2. Record the full price after tax, activation fees and required carrier service.
  3. Subtract only trade-in credit that you can actually receive for your device’s condition and region.
  4. Check whether the offer is a temporary promotion, an installment obligation or a device-unlocked purchase.
  5. Confirm warranty coverage, return period and whether an imported model is supported locally.
  6. Compare the final gap with the features you value: lighter weight, slimmer folded profile, hinge feel and cover-screen controls.

Samsung mentions trade-in programs and Samsung Care+ options, but terms vary by market and date. Treat them as deal-specific details rather than universal ownership costs.

Which phone should you buy?

Buy the Galaxy Z Flip8 if:

  • You want Samsung’s thinnest and lightest version of this design: 180 g, 6.1 mm unfolded and 13.1 mm folded in the cited specifications.
  • You care about the revised hinge’s smoother opening feel or Samsung’s claim of a reduced crease.
  • You use the phone closed frequently and will benefit from One UI 9’s apps tray, widgets, alerts, music controls or selfie framing.
  • You are buying new and the local price premium is modest after discounts and trade-in.
  • You have confirmed which processor your regional model contains and are comfortable with that choice.

Buy the Galaxy Z Flip7 if:

  • Your local Flip7 discount is substantial.
  • You want the same 6.9-inch main display and 4.1-inch cover display for less.
  • You do not need the Flip8-specific cover-screen functions or the slimmer chassis.
  • You find a better warranty, carrier deal or storage configuration on the older model.
  • You are upgrading from a much older phone and would rather spend the difference on storage, insurance or accessories.

Keep your existing Flip7 if:

  • You are satisfied with its battery behavior and hinge.
  • You rarely use the cover screen for more than notifications, clock checks and simple controls.
  • You would pay close to full price for the Flip8 and cannot identify a daily benefit from its thinner body or One UI 9 features.

Buying checklist for either generation

  • Region: verify the exact model number, processor, network bands, eSIM support and warranty territory.
  • Storage: select 256 GB or 512 GB deliberately; do not infer capacity from a product color or photo.
  • Condition: for used or refurbished units, inspect the hinge, inner screen protector, cover glass and frame for impact damage.
  • Battery: remember that a 4,300 mAh rating does not reveal the health of a used phone’s battery.
  • Protection: buy a case labeled for the exact generation. Do not assume a Flip7 case fits the Flip8 because the phones have the same screen sizes.
  • Returns: keep the packaging and confirm the return window in case the hinge feel, crease visibility or cover-screen workflow does not suit you.
  • Accessories: confirm whether the box includes the charger or only a cable in your market before budgeting for one.

Bottom line

The Galaxy Z Flip8 is the more refined phone: it is 8 g lighter, thinner in both cited measurements, uses a revised hinge and adds more cover-screen interaction through One UI 9. Its processor is newer but market-dependent, and its camera improvements are presented primarily as processing features. Battery capacity and listed charging remain the same, while Tom’s Guide’s test slightly favored Flip7.

Buy the Flip8 when those refinements matter to your routine and the local premium is acceptable. Buy the Flip7 when a meaningful discount gives you the same-size screens and core foldable experience for less. Neither is categorically best for every buyer; the right choice is determined by your regional model and the actual price after discounts, trade-in and warranty differences.
