Choose the Watch8 Classic if you want traditional styling and a rotating bezel; choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if rugged outdoor features, a large display, or cellular connectivity matter most. For size, compare comfort and legibility rather than relying on a wrist-measurement cutoff—Samsung does not publish one for choosing a watch case.
Which Galaxy Watch should you buy?
Samsung’s US guide identifies the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9, announced in July 2026, as its latest models. The Watch8 and Watch8 Classic are 2025 models; the Watch7 and original Galaxy Watch Ultra are from 2024. The Watch9 is Samsung’s sporty, everyday wellness option. Pick between a 40 mm case, listed at 31.5 g, and a 44 mm case, listed at 34 g. The smaller option prioritizes a compact feel; the larger gives you a larger display. Samsung lists battery capacities of 390 mAh for the 40 mm model and 445 mAh for the 44 mm model. Those capacity figures are not a direct comparison of real-world battery life.

Samsung describes Ultra2 as rugged and outdoor-ready. What size Galaxy Watch should you get?
For the Watch9, choose 40 mm if a smaller case is your priority; choose 44 mm if you want a larger display and are comfortable with a larger watch. The Watch8 Classic is 46 mm and the Ultra2 is 47 mm, so both have a larger-case profile than the smaller Watch9. Samsung does not publish wrist-circumference cutoffs for selecting among these cases.

- If possible, try the case on and move your wrist. Check that it sits comfortably without feeling cumbersome.
- Consider wearing comfort while sleeping as well as during the day.
- Check whether the display is easy for you to read and whether the watch looks proportionate to your preferred style.
These are practical fit checks, not a Samsung sizing formula. Case size is also separate from band length: Samsung lists its official S/M bands for wrists measuring 130–190 mm and M/L bands for 145–205 mm. If you need to measure, Samsung recommends using string and a ruler. Samsung’s band sizing and compatibility guidance

Compare the differences that affect your choice
Fit and weight
The Watch9 models weigh 31.5 g and 34 g, while the Watch8 Classic weighs 63.5 g and Ultra2 weighs 61.5 g, according to Samsung’s comparison. If wearing a heavier case would bother you, the Watch9’s smaller options are the natural starting point. The numbers describe the watches, not how a particular case will feel on your wrist.
Controls and style
The Watch9 has a sporty everyday design. The Watch8 Classic pairs traditional styling with a rotating bezel. Ultra2 has a rugged outdoor-oriented design. Choose based on the appearance and interaction style you actually want, not just the model’s place in Samsung’s lineup.

Battery capacity is not runtime
Samsung lists battery capacities of 390 mAh for the 40 mm Watch9, 445 mAh for the 44 mm Watch9, 445 mAh for the Watch8 Classic, and 800 mAh for Ultra2. Capacity alone does not establish how long each model lasts in real use, so these figures should not be treated as a tested runtime ranking.

Watch8-series bands use a new dedicated attachment and do not fit previously released models, according to Samsung Support. Watch8 and Watch8 Classic bands are compatible with each other. Samsung lists a 20 mm connection for Watch7 and a dedicated 34 mm band connection for the original Ultra. Confirm the exact watch generation before ordering a replacement band.

Samsung’s 2026 interim report documents the preceding generations: Watch7 and Watch8 each came in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes; the original Ultra was 47 mm; and Watch8 Classic was 46 mm. Samsung reports that Watch8 uses Wear OS 6, while Watch7 and the first Ultra use Wear OS 5.
