Some Galaxy phones qualify for up to seven years of security updates, while Motorola publishes very different terms for different families. A Motorola Edge can be a sensible long-term purchase when its written support period is strong and its price is substantially lower.

Why the logo alone cannot answer the update question
Manufacturers do not apply one universal support term to every phone they sell. A premium phone may receive years of operating-system upgrades and security patches, while a budget model from the same brand receives far fewer. Carrier approval, country, unlocked-versus-carrier edition, and the exact model code can also change when an update arrives.

“How many Android updates will this phone get?” has two separate answers:
#1 Best Overall

- BUILT TO LAST: With an improved IP54 rating, Galaxy A17 5G is even more durable than before.⁴ It’s built to resist splashes and dust and comes with a stronger yet slimmer Gorilla Glass Victus front and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer back.
- Major Android or One UI upgrades: new platform generations and, on Samsung, the company’s One UI layer.
- Security updates: patches that fix vulnerabilities and sometimes correct serious stability problems without changing the Android generation.
A phone can stop receiving major Android upgrades and still receive security patches. Conversely, a published maximum is not a guarantee that every regional or carrier variant will receive an update on the same day.
What Samsung and Motorola have officially committed to
Samsung’s policy has a high ceiling, with eligibility limits
In 2022, Samsung Electronics said selected Galaxy devices would receive up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. The wording “up to” and “select devices” is important: it was not a blanket promise for every Galaxy model.
Samsung Mobile Security states that, from January 2024, support for some Galaxy devices extends to up to seven years. Samsung also classifies devices by update frequency: a particular model may be on a monthly, quarterly, or biannual security schedule. A seven-year term therefore does not mean seven years of monthly patches.
Samsung’s 2022 announcement described the goal as delivering a more current and secure mobile experience for Galaxy users. TM Roh, then president of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, said many customers were keeping phones longer, including for sustainability reasons. That rationale explains why a longer support term can matter even when the owner does not install every new Android feature.
Motorola uses device-specific schedules
Motorola publishes support schedules by device and warns that timing and carrier support can vary. The brand therefore cannot be assigned one universal Android-upgrade or security-patch number. Check the official Motorola security-update page for your country, find the exact model, and record the stated end date before buying.
The spread between Motorola families is substantial. A current Edge example has a much longer written term than a budget Moto G example, so “Motorola gets fewer updates” is too broad to be useful. The model’s published schedule is the evidence that matters.

Android Enterprise Recommended is a useful baseline, not a consumer guarantee
Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended requirements call for security updates for five years from a device’s initial ship date and require the manufacturer to disclose support information. This is an enterprise qualification, not a rule that makes every consumer phone identical. A consumer model may not carry that designation, and carrier or regional delivery can still affect timing.

Samsung Galaxy and Motorola support examples
The table shows the differences using current examples reported by Android Central in 2026. “Not stated” means the cited report did not provide that value; it is not permission to assume a shorter or longer term.
| Phone or policy example | Launch date | Android version at launch | Promised major upgrades | Security support | Cadence or delivery qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge | Not stated in the cited report | Not stated in the cited report | Seven OS generations | Seven years; calendar end date not stated | Samsung’s device schedule applies; exact cadence not stated for this example |
| Samsung Galaxy A26 | Not stated in the cited report | Not stated in the cited report | Six OS-generation upgrades | Not stated in the cited report | Confirm the model’s Samsung Mobile Security schedule and local availability |
| Motorola Edge 70 | Not stated in the cited report | Not stated in the cited report | Four Android OS generations | More than five years; calendar end date not stated | Motorola says timing and carrier support can vary; exact cadence not stated |
| Moto G Power (2025) | 2025 model year; exact ship date not stated in the cited report | Not stated in the cited report | Two OS upgrades | Three years; calendar end date not stated | Confirm carrier and regional schedule with Motorola |
| Samsung policy announced in 2022 | Applies by eligible model, not one launch date | Not applicable | Up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades | Up to five years for select Galaxy devices | Samsung schedules eligible devices monthly, quarterly, or biannually |
| Samsung policy from January 2024 | Applies to some eligible Galaxy devices | Not applicable | Not stated as a universal number in the cited policy summary | Up to seven years | Frequency remains model-dependent: monthly, quarterly, or biannual |
For every row, treat the manufacturer’s current model page and regional security schedule as the final check. Independent reporting is useful for spotting the range of promises, but it should not replace the written schedule for the phone you intend to buy.
How to count Android updates correctly
Do not count the factory version as an upgrade
If a phone ships with Android generation X and receives four later generations, the manufacturer is promising four upgrades after launch, not four total versions including the software already installed. Retail listings sometimes blur this distinction, so look for language such as “four OS upgrades” or “four generations,” rather than a vague claim that a phone is “supported for four years.”
Separate One UI changes from Android generations
Samsung’s promise refers to One UI and Android OS generations together. A One UI release may include Samsung-specific features while the underlying Android generation changes on Google’s schedule. Count the promised Android generations first; treat interface features as an additional benefit, not as extra Android upgrades.
Separate feature updates from security patches
A monthly security bulletin does not turn into a new Android generation. A quarterly or biannual schedule can still be valuable, but it means vulnerabilities may be addressed less frequently than on a monthly track. The support term and the cadence are separate fields you should record when comparing phones.

What happens after major Android updates stop?
When major upgrades end, the phone can continue to run its existing Android version. Apps may keep working for a considerable time, and the device can remain adequate for calls, messaging, browsing, media, and other established tasks. You lose access to later platform features and may eventually encounter apps that require a newer Android version.
Security support is the more important distinction for a phone that handles banking, work accounts, private photographs, authentication codes, or business email. If patches continue, known vulnerabilities can still be addressed even though the Android version does not change. Once security support ends, newly discovered weaknesses are no longer covered by the manufacturer’s normal schedule.
There is no universal “safe” grace period after the final patch. Risk depends on the phone’s use, installed applications, account protections, browser exposure, and whether an attacker is targeting a vulnerability in that device. For a sensitive workload, plan replacement around the published security end date rather than around the last major Android upgrade.
Which brand is better for long-term use?
Choose Samsung when support certainty is the deciding factor
- You want the highest published support ceiling and are buying a Galaxy model explicitly covered by the seven-year policy.
- You prefer a clearly documented monthly, quarterly, or biannual security classification.
- You intend to keep the phone through several upgrade cycles and do not want to research a new schedule every time.
- The Samsung model has enough storage, battery capacity, and performance for the entire planned ownership period.
Samsung is not automatically the better purchase if the specific Galaxy model has a shorter term, a much higher price, or hardware that does not fit your needs. Verify eligibility rather than assuming that every Galaxy inherits the longest policy.
Choose a Motorola Edge when its written term and price work together
- The exact Edge model’s official schedule gives you the security end date you need.
- The phone costs materially less than a similarly supported Galaxy.
- You value Motorola’s hardware, software approach, or battery characteristics and accept that delivery timing can vary by carrier and region.
- You have checked that the unlocked or carrier edition you will buy is covered by the same schedule.
The reported Motorola Edge 70 example—four Android OS generations and more than five years of security support—can be a strong value when its lower purchase price offsets Samsung’s longer ceiling. That conclusion applies to a documented Edge schedule, not to every Motorola phone.
Be cautious with budget models
The reported Moto G Power 2025 example receives two OS upgrades and three years of security updates. That may be perfectly reasonable for a lower-cost phone intended for a shorter ownership period, but it is a poor match for someone planning to keep a device for five or more years. The Galaxy A26 example is reported to receive six OS-generation upgrades, illustrating how sharply budget support can differ between brands and models.

Long-term value: calculate it instead of guessing resale or total cost
No single current statistic establishes that Samsung or Motorola has higher resale value or lower total cost of ownership. Do not assign an invented percentage to either brand. A longer support term can reduce how often you replace a phone, but the result depends on purchase price, battery replacement, repair cost, accessories, financing, and how long you actually keep the device.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use this simple comparison for two candidate phones:
- Write down the full purchase price, including any mandatory carrier or activation cost.
- Record the manufacturer’s security-support end date and the number of promised major upgrades.
- Choose your intended ownership period, such as three, five, or seven years.
- Mark the first date on which security support would end before that target.
- Add likely costs for a battery replacement, screen repair, case, charger, and storage accessories.
- Divide the resulting ownership cost by the number of months you expect to use the phone.
This calculation does not predict resale proceeds, because the available evidence does not establish a reliable brand-wide resale advantage. It does show whether paying more for a longer written support term fits your own replacement plan.
Hardware factors that can end useful life before support does
Software eligibility is only one part of longevity. Before choosing either brand, compare the exact models on:
- Battery: capacity, charging speed, battery-health tools, and the availability and cost of an authorized replacement.
- Performance and storage: processor headroom, RAM, storage capacity, and whether storage expansion is available. A phone can remain patched but feel slow or run out of space.
- Display and durability: glass protection, water resistance, repair pricing, and the likelihood of accidental damage.
- Camera and connectivity: whether the cameras, 5G bands, Wi-Fi generation, eSIM support, and accessibility features meet your entire ownership plan.
- Repairability: local parts and service availability. A low repair cost can extend a phone’s practical life; a difficult or uneconomic repair can make a long software promise irrelevant.
These hardware characteristics are model-specific. Do not infer them from the Samsung or Motorola name alone.

How to verify support before buying
- Identify the exact model. Record the full model name, storage version, unlocked or carrier edition, and country where it will be used.
- Find the manufacturer’s schedule. On Samsung, check the model’s support statement and its listing in Samsung Mobile Security. On Motorola, use the official security-update page for your region and locate the exact model.
- Record both promises. Write down the number of major Android upgrades and the security-support end date. If either is missing, treat it as “not stated,” not as an implied guarantee.
- Check cadence. Note whether Samsung lists monthly, quarterly, or biannual patches. For Motorola, note any carrier or regional timing qualification.
- Check the ship-date basis. Enterprise requirements measure five years from initial ship date, so an older phone bought at a discount may have less remaining support than its retail purchase date suggests.
- Confirm the seller’s version. A carrier model, imported unit, or regional variant may not share the same update path as the model described in a review.
- Compare hardware and price. Only after support is verified should you compare battery, performance, repair options, and total ownership cost.
How to check an existing phone’s remaining support
- Open Settings and note the exact model name and model number under the phone’s device information.
- Check the installed Android version and the date of the latest security patch in the software-information screen.
- Match that model number to the manufacturer’s current security schedule for your country and carrier.
- Compare the latest patch date on the phone with the cadence promised for the model. A delay can be a carrier rollout issue, but repeated misses warrant contacting the carrier or manufacturer.
- Set a replacement reminder before the published security end date, allowing time to transfer accounts, authentication apps, photographs, and backups.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Galaxy gets seven years
The seven-year figure applies to some Galaxy devices from January 2024, not to every Galaxy phone ever sold. Confirm the exact model’s eligibility.

Treating “five years” as five years of monthly patches
Samsung separates support duration from cadence. A quarterly or biannual device can remain supported while receiving patches less often than a monthly device.
Using a review headline instead of the official schedule
Independent reports can summarize a promise accurately but may omit regional, carrier, or later policy changes. Use the manufacturer’s current model page as the final authority.
Ignoring the purchase date versus the ship date
Support clocks commonly begin at initial shipment, not when you personally buy the phone. An older clearance unit can therefore have fewer months remaining than a newer model bought at a similar price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfusing an Android Enterprise qualification with universal consumer coverage
The five-year Android Enterprise Recommended requirement is an enterprise baseline. It does not make every consumer phone, region, or carrier edition identical.
Bottom line for a 2026 purchase
Start with the security end date, not the brand badge. Samsung offers the stronger default for buyers who want the longest and most predictable support, provided the specific Galaxy is eligible for the advertised term. Motorola can deliver better long-term value when the exact Edge or other model has a written schedule that meets your ownership plan and costs less. Budget phones require the closest scrutiny: the difference between two OS upgrades and six, or three years of security support and seven, can determine whether a bargain remains usable for the years you expect.
Record the model-specific promises, verify your region and carrier, compare hardware life and total cost, and replace the phone before security support ends if it handles sensitive accounts.
